VARSITY

It is still very early in the 2022 cross country season, but the Seven Lakes Showcase in Katy on Saturday was a good test for the Spartans as they faced off against most of the top teams in 6A Region III, and a handful of other top teams from across the Houston area. Although the 5k course was soggy and a bit slippery at places, Mother Nature cooperated (humidity aside) and it was a fun and exciting morning for cross country racing.

Girls

Our girls finished 4th out of 19 teams on Saturday, only behind Kingwood, Klein Oak, (both ranked top-10 in state in most recent coaches poll) and Katy Tompkins.

Junior Niamh Collins and senior Siena Yoder earned medals by finishing in the top-20 overall, with Collins taking 16th and Yoder 20th.

With five runners back this year from the team that won the district championship last season and took second at the regional meet to qualify for state, this group of Spartan girls is proving once again that they can compete with the best.

Results: (133 finishers)

  • Niamh Collins - 16th - 19:48
  • Siena Yoder - 20th - 20:06
  • Maggie Pearce - 28th - 20:38
  • Allie Weinhardt - 33rd - 20:55.6
  • Anastasia Sciretti - 35th - 20:55
  • Amelia Bommer - 48th - 21:18
  • Leah Jordan - 109th - 23:29

Boys

The Stratford boys finished 7th out of 19th teams on Saturday, behind Katy Tompkins, Klein Oak, Strake Jesuit, Seven Lakes, Brazoswood, and Cinco Ranch.

Junior David Kalwahali and sophomore Ben Pearce earned top-20 medals on the day, with Kalwahali taking 4th and Pearce 18th.

Overall, it was a solid performance for our boys team that is in re-build mode to a large extent after losing five runners from last year's team that won the district championship and finished sixth at the regional meet. Kalwahali’s gutsy performance in a very talented field was evidence that he is establishing himself as one of the top cross country runners in the Houston area.

Results: (128 finishers)

  • David Kalwahali - 4th - 15:54
  • Ben Pearce - 18th - 16:39
  • Daylan Rushing - 41st - 17:16
