Cy Fair Tournament

Last weekend the Boys Varsity team kicked off the season with a 5th place finish at the Cy Fair Season Kick Off Tournament going 4-2 on the weekend.

SBISD Tournament

This weekend the Spartans participated in the inaugural SBISD Water Polo Tournament and went 2-2 on the weekend. Day 1 of the tournament started off with a hard-fought game against arch-rival Memorial. The Mustangs jumped out to an early lead, but the Spartans hung tough and battled throughout. Unfortunately, your mighty Spartans never could quite catch the Mustangs who held on for a 7-6 victory. Luke Barber and Parker Kooyman each scored 3 goals apiece to pace the Spartans and Andy Zhuri had numerous incredible saves at point blank range that kept the Spartans in reach.

In the second game of Day 1 the Spartans squared off against Jersey Village, a team they have some history with, and they continued their recent dominance. The Spartans scored quickly jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first 2 minutes on goals by Lowell Moss and Bryce Oliphant. Lowell then added another goal with :01 left in the period on a nice assist from Luke Barber to take a 3-0 lead at the end of the first period. Jersey Village got on the board early in the second period and then later added a second goal before Stratford closed out the first half scoring with a goal of their own from Parker Kooyman. In the third period Luke Barber heated up with 4 goals to lead the Spartans to an 8-4 lead. The Spartans gave up a couple of 4th quarter goals but hung on for the 8-6 victory. Andy Zhuri was spectacular in goal throughout the first two games with numerous incredible saves that were key to the team’s success.

On day two of the tournament the Spartans opened with a game against Cy Ranch. The game started out as a back-and-forth affair with the Spartans edging out a 4-3 lead at the end of the first period. The second period was all Spartans as they pulled out to an 8-4 lead. In the third quarter the Spartans continued to pour it on as they extended the lead to 12-6, and then they pulled further away in the final frame. They were able to get some good experience for many players as they cruised to a 16-7 final. It was a true team effort as Andy Zhuri once again stepped up with great play in goal and 18 saves and he even scored a goal on a full-length, empty-goal shot. Luke Barber led the scoring with 6 goals, while Parker Kooyman also dominated with 4 goals. Lowell Moss and Bryce Oliphant added 2 goals apiece, and Austin Chow chipped in the final goal. Luke Barber, Lucas Storey, and Kyle Brown each had 2 assists and Josh Rebollar, Bryce and Parker each added an assist.

In the night cap, the Spartans squared off with one of the top teams in the region, Brazoswood. The first period opened with intense defensive pressure from Brazoswood and a number of Spartan turnovers that led to a 5-1 Brazoswood lead at the end of the period. The Spartan defense tightened up in the second period and the teams fought to a 6-3 halftime score. In the third period both offenses got on track but, unfortunately, Brazoswood found the back of the net more often and took a 14-7 lead into the final frame. The Spartans outscored Brazoswood 3-2 in the final frame, but dropped the game by a final of 16-10. For the Spartans offense Austin Chow, Kyle Brown, and Luke Barber led the scoring with 2 goals apiece and Lowell Moss, Nathan Moss, Parker Kooyman, and Bryce Oliphant each scored a goal.

Overall the boys played really well against a slate of very stiff competition and showed much progress throughout the tournament. They will look to build on this experience when they square off on Tuesday against another tough regional foe, Lamar High School.
