Spring Woods vs Stratford

02-Feb-2022

The Spring Woods Tigers came to Stratford’s campus on a Wednesday evening to challenge our Lady Spartans.

Stratford applied strong and consistent pressure on offense throughout the match.  Hope Coltrin was fouled 15 minutes into the game and Rileigh Toner placed a beautiful free kick on the top shelf of the goal from more than 10 yards outside the penalty box.  Spring Woods followed with a quick counterattack which enabled two dangerous shots in an effort to tie the game. Stratford quickly regained possession and ratcheted up the pressure again.

Spring Woods’ goalie is very athletic and made a number of good saves to keep the Tigers in the game.  Eventually Ryann Weber made a delicate pass out front and Rileigh Toner blistered another shot to the corner of the goal with 10 minutes remaining in the first half.  Stratford continued to remain in control although there was some back and forth.  Make no mistake about it, Spring Woods is a scrappy bunch of young ladies with talent.  Our defenders played well to maintain a shutout with notable efforts from Ellie Stephenson, Cameron Ballard, and all 3 of our goalies (Allison Zilafro, Erica Eastman, and Claire Holcomb).

As the second half began, Coach Walters changed some personnel to try some different combinations.  Mia Thames scored on a great shot 7 minutes into the half, and Lauren Ahearn followed with a strong goal a few minutes later to make the score 4-0.  Another group of substitutions entered the game at the midway point of the second half, and the Spartans kept on the pressure and continued to wear down the Tigers.  Rileigh Toner’s perfectly placed a corner kick resulted in a goal with 6 minutes left in the game to conclude the scoring at 5-Nil.  And this goal completed a hat trick for Rileigh – the player of the game!

Memorial vs Stratford

05-Feb-2022

On Saturday, the Stratford Lady Spartans hosted the Memorial Mustangs for a much anticipated match. As to be expected, it was an exciting and very physical game. Lots of back-and-forth play kept everyone on the edge of their seat. With 15 minutes left in the first half, Hope Coltrin ran the ball up the side followed by a beautiful pass in front of the goal to Allison Goodwin making it 1-0 Stratford. Great game play continued during the second half with some solid shots on the goal by both teams. Despite a very solid effort by Memorial’s frontline, Stratford’s mid-field and the backline  – along with some amazing saves by goalie Allison Zilafro, Memorial was unable to get on the board. It was a true team effort. Congratulations ladies on the well-deserved W against Memorial!

The Stratford Lady Spartans’ Varsity team continues its district winning streak at 4-0.
