Varsity – Week of 1/31/22

2/2 - SHS v. Memorial – 51-37 (W)

The Spartans first game of the week was against rival Memorial as the home team at DCC.  The students and community once again showed up in force for the Spartans and were ready to cheer them on to victory!

The first quarter started slow for the Spartans and we were down 9-11 headed into the 2nd quarter.  The 2nd quarter was not much better with the Spartans definitely not having settled into the game.  Memorial was keeping the Spartan off balance but even with all their efforts the Spartans took the momentum into the half with Everett Bates hitting a buzzer beater three-point shot putting the Spartans up 21-20.

The Spartans came out with more energy and more in sync in the 2nd half and quickly pulled to a 7-point lead.  Though it went back and forth a bit, the Spartans ended the quarter up 7 pts at 31-24.  The 4th quarter the Spartans finally pulled it all together and with the strong play of Keanu Dawes, the Spartans ultimately pulled away and won the game 51-37.

A season sweep of Memorial will definitely be one of the highlights of the season for our 6 seniors!

Game stats:

  • K. Dawes – 20 pts, 4 rebs
  • E. Bates – 10 pts, 1 reb
  • L. Hatcher – 10 pts, 3 rebs
  • K. Bell – 4 pts, 4 rebs
  • C. Cronin – 3 pts
  • C. Francis – 2 pts, 1 reb
  • T. Williams – 2 pts, 1 reb

2/5 – SHS v. Cy Creek – 67-57 (W)

The Spartans were on the road on Saturday against the Cy Creek Cougar.  The Spartans were 3rd in district at 8-2 headed into the game with Cy Creek in first and Cy Ridge in second both at 9-1.  A win was needed to keep the Spartans in contention for first place.

The first game against the Cougars had gone into OT with a last second 3 point shot by Everett Bates and the Spartan pulling out a narrow win in OT.  The Spartans knew this would be another tough match on the road.

As expected the both teams came out ready to play.  The fist quarter went back and forth but stayed close with the Cougars up 2 at the end of the quarter 21-19.

The Spartans turned it up in the 2nd quarter.  With strong defense that turned into a number of fast break points and strong offensive performances by Everett Bates and Keanu Dawes, the Spartans were up 12 going into half at 43-31.

The Spartans came out strong in the 3rd quarter and were up 18 with just over 4 minutes left in the quarter.  The Cougars however, were not ready to give up and the Spartans had a bit of a let down moment and by the end of the quarter the Cougars had pulled within 9 at 52-43.

The Cougars continued to fight back and quick 5 points at the beginning of the quarter and Creek was within 4 with 7 minutes left in the game.  The Cougars got with in 2 with about 5 minutes left but Stratford put together a good final half of the quarter and pulled out a BIG win on the road, 67-57.

Game Stats:

  • K. Dawes – 24pts, 7 rebs
  • E. Bates – 12pts, 1 reb
  • L. Hatcher – 10 pts, 10 rebs
  • K. Bell – 9 pts, 2 rebs
  • C. Cronin – 8 pts, 4 rebs
  • C. Francis – 3 pts
  • T. Williams – 1pt, 3 pts

With the win against Creek, the Spartans are 9-2 along with Creek and Cy-Ridge.  The boys will take on Northbrook on Wednesday on the road and then will have a big game with huge district implications against Cy Ridge on Saturday at noon in the Competition Gym.  We need our fans to show up once again!  Be there!
