1/18 - SHS v. Cy Ridge – 54-58 (L)

The Spartans started the week on the road against the Cy Ridge Rams.  Stratford was sitting at the top in the district standings, however, they were 1 of three teams with a 4-1 record.  The Rams being one of the three.  Unfortunately, the Rams showed up and so did their fans.  The Spartans came out flat and never were able to gain control of the game.  Ultimately losing a close game 54-58.

Game stats:

  • K. Dawes – 13 pts, 6 rebs
  • E. Bates – 12 pts, 2 rebs
  • L. Hatcher – 10 pts, 8 rebs
  • C. Francis – 9 pts, 3 pts
  • K. Bell – 5 pts, 2 rebs

1/21 – SHS v. Cy Fair – 56-43 (W)

After the tough loss on Tuesday against the Rams, the Spartans were back home against the Cy Fair Bobcats.  Both teams had a 4-2 record and were tied for 3rd place in district.  The Spartans needed this win for sole place of 3rd place and to stay in the race for 1st place in district.

The game started slow for both teams.  Fair was playing scrappy and was very physical on defense.  The Spartans struggled to find their offensive flow.  That, along with some missed free throws, and the game was all tied up at 11 at the end of the first.

The 2nd quarter was more of the same.  Neither team playing well and the Spartans struggling with the physicality of the game. The Spartans only managed to double their score in the 2nd quarter and went into half with one of their lowest half scores of the season up 22-19.

The beginning of the 3rd quarter started much like the first half.  Some questionable non-calls by the refs and the game was still at 22-19 until Everett Bates hit a 3-point shot with 5:48 left in the game to break the stale mate.  The Spartans started to show a bit of spark and began to click offensively as well as play good defense.  At the end of the 3rd the Spartans were up 9 at 39-30.

The Spartans continued to play as a team and E. Bates and C. Cronin were able to draw two charges against the Bobcats early on.  Along with some strong shooting by L. Hatcher and K. Dawes the Spartans were up 17 with 5:00 left in the quarter.  At that point, the Spartans were able to control the game and ultimately the score never got with in 13 for the last 5 minutes of the game.  The Spartans won 56-43 and took over sole control of 3rd place in the district with a 5-2 record.

Game stats:

  • L. Hatcher – 18 pts, 14 rebs
  • K . Dawes – 14 pts, 8 rebs
  • E. Bates – 9 pts, 4 rebs
  • C. Cronin – 9 pts, 2 rebs
  • E. Bates – 8 pts, 1 reb
  • K. Bell – 4 pts, 5 rebs
  • H. Putnik – 5 pts, 4 rebs
  • T. Williams – 3 pts, 2 rebs
  • P. Skoutelakis –2 rebs
  • C. Francis – 3 rebs

The 2nd half of district begins this week.  The Spartans will be playing Jersey Village at home on Wednesday.  A rematch from their first district game that the Spartans lost in double OT at Jersey Village before the holidays.  The games switch to Wednesday/Saturday for the remainder of district.  Game this Wednesday at 7:00 pm and Saturday at 12:00 pm against Spring Woods.  Both in the Competition gym.
