The varsity basketball team started the break off on that first Saturday of the holiday by serving the community and helped wrap presents for Lily’s Toy Box.  An organization formed by Lily, a young girl in our community, who wanted to help kids that had lost everything after Hurricane Harvey.  Lily’s Toy Box has continued well past that event and helps kids in our community throughout the year.

After enjoying a week off, the Spartans were back at work this past week playing in the Vype Holiday Invitational and opened up against Fort Bend Austin.  The boys were back to their old form and played a very well-rounded game beating FB Austin 73-60.

Next up were the highly rated Atascocita Eagles who rank in the Top 10 in the state of Texas.  The Spartans started slow but continued to fight.  The game stayed within 10 points most of the game with the Spartans pulling within 5 late in the game.  However, ultimately a couple missed shots and unfortunate turnovers kept the Spartans from closing the gap completely and Atascocita pulled out the win over the Spartans with a final score of 42-52.

The final game for our Spartans was against the Nimitz Cougars for 3rd place in the Thorne Division Bracket.  The Spartans dominated the Cougars most the game and at one point spurred by Everett Bates, who was 5 of 8 from the 3-point line, led by more than 20pts in the 3rd quarter.  The Cougars had a bit of a spark in the 4th and pulled within 9 in the 4th quarter.   However, a couple clutch free throws by Caden Francis to go up 11 gave the Spartans the spark they needed and ultimately the Spartans won the game 65-54.

Game Stats:

SHS v. FB Austin

Leading scorers: Keanu Dawes – 23pts, Triston Williams – 15pts, Luke Hatcher – 14pts.

SHS v. Atascocita

Leading scorers: Luke Hatcher – 15pts, Caden Francis – 9pts

SHS v. Nimitz

Leading scorers: Luke Hatcher – 19pts, Everett Bates – 15pts, Triston Williams – 11pts

The Spartans are looking to take their strong performance from the Vype Tournament and rebound after a tough first district game loss to Jersey Village on that Friday before the holidays. The boys play at Spring Woods HS on Tuesday, January 3rd and then close the week out against rival Memorial at DCC on Friday, January 7th.  Come out and support your team!
