Varsity – Week of 11/29/21

It was a busy week for the varsity basketball team.  They doubled the number of games played to date this season by playing six games in the span of 5 days.  It started on the road in Brenham and ended by going 5-1 in the Katy Classic and claiming the title of Silver Bracket Champions!  This is an exciting basketball team to watch and is certain to have a great season. Come check them out on Friday, December 10th when they play the highly rated Strake Jesuit team at home!

SHS Varsity v Brenham HS – 11/30/21

The Varsity team started the week in Brenham for a game against the Brenham Cubs.  The boys started off hot and appeared ready to cruise to an easy win going into half time with a large lead.  However, the Cubs were not going down without a fight and gave our Spartans a bit of a run in the second half.  The Spartan ultimately won the game 60-50.

Luke Hatcher led all scoring with 23 pts followed by Cade Francis with 11pts. Keanu Dawes led in rebounding with 8 followed by Keshaun Bell and L. Hatcher both with 5.

Katy Classic 12/2/31-12/4/21 – SILVER BRACKET CHAMPIONS!!!!

12/2/21

The Varsity boys played in the Katy Classic this past weekend.  After a heartbreaking loss in their first game, the boys bounced back and won four straight and came out as the Champions of the Silver Bracket!

The boys were matched up against the highly rated Paetow Panthers in their first pool game on Thursday.  Your Spartans came out to play and gave the Panthers all they had.  At the end of the 1st quarter the boys were down 2 at 13-15.  The 2nd quarter was even and the boys went into half time down 2 at 25-27.  The boys started slow in the third but recovered and were down 1 at the end of the third at 41-42.  The Spartans started the 4th quarter strong and with two heads up in-bound passes by Keshaun Bell to Everett Bates for two quick layups the Spartan were up by 5 with 3 minutes left.  However, Paetow came back strong.  The Spartans were hanging on to a 52-50 lead with 59 seconds left.  The Panthers came up with a huge 3 to bring the score to 53-52 with 15 seconds left.  The Spartans took the ball down and Luke Hatcher scored a huge contested layup with 8 seconds left to put them up by 1.  Unfortunately, it was the Panthers that ultimately scored the biggest layup with time expiring and pulled out the win 54-55.

Keanu Dawes led all scoring and rebounds and ended the game with a double double (21 pts and 12 rebounds).  Luke Hatcher followed with 12 pts and 6 rebounds.

The Spartan’s second pool game on Thursday was against Cy Woods.  It was obvious that the boys were coming off a physical and emotional first game as they came out flat and the intensity was not there.  The boys were down 16-19 at the end of the 1st quarter and the 2nd quarter was much the same.  The Spartans went into halftime down 27-29.  They seem to find a bit of energy and motivation in the 3rd quarter and ended up 43-40 going into the 4th quarter.  With 4 minutes left in the game we were up by 8 and the game never felt in danger after that point in large part due to the spark provided by Paul Skoutelakis who scored 15 of his 21 points in the 2nd half and helped light a fire in the team.  The Spartans took the win 66-56 and secured a spot in the Silver Bracket.  Skoutelakis was the leading scorer followed by Caden Francis with 12 and Everett Bates with 11.  Everyone on the team shared in the rebounding with Bates, Hatcher and K. Bell leading with 4 each.

Championship Game v. Bridgeland

The Spartans knew going into the Championship again against Bridgeland that it would be a tough game.  We had played them just a couple weeks earlier and had pulled off a tough 2-point win.  The boys did not come out with the intensity needed and one wondered if they had used it all in the first game of the day.  Bridgeland scored the first 7 points of the game and ultimately were ahead 11-4 early in the 1st quarter.  Caden Francis having left after the first game to go to a band competition got back just in time for tip off and came in off the bench bringing the energy we needed.  By the end of the half we were up 24-22.

The boys came out ready to play in the 2nd half and brought the intensity needed with all the boys playing their best basketball.  Ultimately, ball movement, playing unselfishly, great defense and overall team ball brought the Chip home to Stratford.  The final score was 62-56. Leading scorer was Luke Hatcher with 21pts.  Keanu Dawes had a double double with 14 pts and 12 rebounds.

SHS v. Bridgeland game stats:

  • L. Hatcher – 21pts; 6 rebs, 1 stl, 1 blk
  • K. Dawes – 14 pts, 12 rebs, 2 asts
  • C. Francis – 12 pts, 4 rebs, 1 asts, 1 stl
  • P. Skoutelakis – 7 pts, 1 reb, 1 stl
  • K. Bell – 4 pts, 4 rebs, 1 ast, 1 stl
  • E. Bates – 4 pts, 4 rebs, 2 asts, 1 stl
