SHS Varsity v Bridgeland – 11/16/21

The varsity teams first home game of the season against Bridgeland pulled in a great crowd with the student body showing up in force for their Spartans.  The Spartans took control early and appeared to be headed for a comfortable win prior to letting the Bears sneak back into the game in the 4th quarter.

Game started well for the Spartans with a baseline pass from Cameron Cronin to Everett Bates for 3.  Keshaun Bell followed with a steal and layup.  Keanu Dawes had what will be one of many highlight reel plays with a huge block that he pinned to the back board with about 4 minutes left in the quarter.  Luke Hatcher with a nice steal and layup with about 2 minutes left.  A little spurt by the Bears at the end of the first and the Spartans ended the quarter up 11-9.

Dawes started the 2nd quarter with a long pass to Bell for the layup.  In another one for the highlight reels, after a missed shot by the Bears, Cronin with a no look pass to Dawes for the breakaway that was punctuated by a solid dunk.  The Spartans continued to play hard and, in a season, where dunking will be the norm, Cronin had a solid throw down dunk in traffic with about 4 left in the half.  Dawes ended the half with a cross over step back at the buzzer for 3.  The Spartans were up 26-18 at the half.

The third quarter saw a bit of a let down from the Spartans only scoring 9 to the Bears 12.  The quarter was highlighted by a few nice spin move layups by Cronin and Hatcher which were started by nice assists from Bates and Caden Francis, respectively.

The 4th quarter started with the Spartans leading 35-30.  The Spartans started off strong in the 4th with everyone on the court getting in on the action.  Bates started off with a 3 point.  Bell had a good move down the lane, finishing strong at the rim.  Francis, a baseline move to the hoop for and one.  Both Dawes and Hatcher contributed with nice moves to the basket and strong defense.  The Spartans were up 48-40 with 3 minutes left.  However, the Bears were not ready to give up and some sloppy play and bad turnovers had the lead down to 2 at 55-53 with 1.8 seconds left.  The Bears got the inbound under their basket and were able to get a 3-point shot off but Bates got the block and secured the win.

K. Dawes led in most categories with 19 pts, 11 rebounds, and 5 blocks.

L. Hatcher added 11 pts, 4 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 block.

Rounding out the stats: E. Bates 10 pts and led with 3 assists.  K. Bell had 6 points, C. Francis had 4 pts and C. Cronin had 4pts, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals and James McVaugh added a free-throw.

SHS Varsity v Cy Park – 11/23/21

The Thanksgiving holiday started with a game at home against a good Cy Park team.  Though a holiday and a lot of people out of town, the fans and especially the student section once again showed up to support the boys and they were not disappointed.

The first quarter started with the Tigers getting the early lead but Bates tied the game at 7 with a three-point shot.  The Tigers were in the lead again but a drive from half court by Hatcher with the and one and the game was tied at 12.  The quarter continued back and forth but a nice baseline move by Dawes and the dunk and a fast break layup by Bates and the Spartans were up 20-17 at the end of the first.

The theme of the 2nd quarter were the fast break points.  It started with a fast break pass from Bates to Dawes for the two-handed slam.  Francis continued the strong play for the Spartans with a fast break layup.  Hatcher not to be out done punctuated a steal and breakaway with a two-handed dunk and the Spartans were up 32-23 with 4:40 left in the half.  However, strong play by the Tigers and the game was within 4 with a little over 2 minutes left but a nice pass from Bates to Dawes for a long three point and the Spartans were back up by 7.  The quarter ended as it started with a fast break from Francis to Paul Skoutelakis and the Spartans were up 40-36 headed into the half.

The Spartans started off flat in the 3rd quarter and were down 44-45 with 4:23 left in the 3rd.  A good long pass from Bates to Skoutelakis for the layup and a cross over jab step at the baseline for Hatcher and the and one and the Spartans were back up 49-48.  The quarter continued back and forth.  The Spartans went up by two with a steal by Francis and a layup but the Tigers tied it up at 57 all to end the 3rd quarter.

It all came down to the 4th quarter.  The Spartans came out ready to play this quarter.  Starting with a no look pass from Bates to Skoutelakis, a nice turn around jump shot by Francis with the and one and then an assist from Francis to Skoutelakis, the Spartans went on a quick run.  Dawes, Hatcher and Bates continued to play strong as well and with a minute left in the game the Spartans were up by 6.  However, a missed defensive rebound off a missed Tiger three allowed for a quick put back and the Tigers were within 4 with just under a minute left.  Hatcher found Dawes wide open under the basket on an in-bound play from the side line and the Spartan were once again up by 6 with 38 second left. The Spartans played tough defensive in the last 30 seconds and the win was secured 76-72.

Stats for the Spartans:

Dawes – 24 pts, 8 rebounds
Hatcher – 18 pts, 10 rebounds, 5 assists
Skoutelakis – 14 pts, 5 rebounds
Bates – 9 pts, 4 rebounds, 7 assists
