Stratford Spartans vs. Seven Lakes Spartans
The Stratford Spartans travelled to Seven Lakes last Wednesday night to play the Lady Spartans.
They continued their winning streak with another sweep 25-14, 25-13. In Game one, Stratford
jumped out early with tough serving from Kelsey Harmon, Susan Burrows and Emily Luck. A strong
wall stood in the frontline including, Haley Harris, McKenzie Martin, and Brooke Wiggins. Katie
Grooms provided dig after dig; therefore Seven Lakes could only rely on a few tips from their
attackers. Stratford attacked from along angles, and Burrows was the kill leader for the game. In
game two, the teams battled it out until Frances Dannenbrink set Hannah Aven up for a big kill. With
kills by Amy Jordan and Aven, the Spartans began to rack points up. Harmon registered a kill and a
block; Harris smashed a quick set to make the score 21-11. With error after error made by Seven
Lakes, the Stratford Spartans defeated Seven Lakes in two games.
Stratford vs. Alief Taylor
Our Lady Spartans took a road trip to Alief Taylor, Friday, September 11 and departed with another 2
win sweep 25-16, 25-13. In Game one, the score was not indicative of Taylor’s efforts towards the
Spartans. The Spartans were pushed into a number of rallies by Taylor as they made great
defensive plays against our attacks. Dannenbrink and Martin moved the ball around to find hitters to
put the ball away. Luck, Burrows, and Martin supplied many kills, while Aven and Wiggins came up
with the blocks. In game two, Dannenbrink started the Spartans off right with an ace and Aven put
down a few blocks. Harris provided a kill off a quick set and the Spartans were up 12-3. The points
kept coming in as Kuhn pulled in a kill, and Harmon served aggressively.
Fort Bend JV Tournament
Saturday, September 12 was a long, but successful day for the Junior Varsity team. The Stratford
Spartans came home with another tournament championship under their belt!
Stratford Spartans vs. Elkins Knights (Match One)
The first match of the morning was against Elkins, the tournament host team. Middle blocker Susan
Burrows was home ill so the Spartans would have to work together. The Lady Spartans started slow;
Elkins remained on our heels early on. Haley Harris supplied a quick kill and a block, Amy Jordan
added a block and a kill from the outside. The lead was further extended by Brooke Wiggins
registering a kill making the score 17-11. Martin powered in a few tough serves and the Spartans
jumped ahead 20-11. The Spartans however conceded their significant leads and the Knights crept
back into the game. At 24-20, Harris smashed a quick kill from the middle to finally end the game. In
game two, Harris started where she left off and provided another quick kill. Dannenbrink went to
serve and had the Spartans up 7-0 before Elkins could even get a point in. Aven bestowed the
Spartan effort with a kill off a slide. Kelsey Harmon aided Katie Grooms in the back row to come up
with some great digs. Elkins could not match the Spartans aggressive play, final score 25-15.
Stratford Spartans vs. Fort Bend Austin Bulldogs (Semi-Final)
In the Semi-finals, the Lady Spartans played the Lady Bulldogs of Fort Bend Austin. The Bulldogs
were defeated by Stratford in a three game match, 25-10, 22-25, 15-4. In game one, Luck stepped
back to the serving line and presented a large lead for the Spartans. Jordan led the team with kills
and Austin had no answer for Aven, Harris, Jordan and Martin’s formidable blocking. In game two,
Aven offered some powerful serves and the bulldogs could only come up with overpasses. The
Spartans attackers capitalized on the overpasses for kills. Austin came back with some aggressive
serving of their own, which wreaked havoc on our back row and inevitably on our offensive line. The
Spartans made a valiant effort when they were down 19-24, but came up short in the end 22-25. In
Game 3, Austin registered the first 2 points of the game, but Stratford answered with 8 points of their
own. Harmon put in commanding serves, Harris supplied dominant kills, and Martin came up strong
with 4 blocks. The game ended on a big kill by Martin from the right side, ending 15-4.
Stratford Spartans vs. Clements Rangers (Championship match)
The 2009 Fort Bend JV tournament championship match was a repeat of last year’s Fort Bend
Freshman tournament championship. Lady Spartans’ opponent was the Clements High School
Lady Rangers. The Spartans defeated the opponent in two, 25-15 and 25-19. In game one, when the
score was tied 7 all, Haley Harris smashed a kill on a quick and the Spartans were ready to rumble.
Wiggins and Aven stepped up with some awesome blocks and Harris led the team in kills. Aven,
Luck, Jordan, and Martin supported the Spartan endeavor as well. Dannenbrink ended game one of
the Championship match with an ace. In Game two, the lady Rangers picked up the intensity. The
Spartans matched the Ranger’s force with awesome digs by Kelsey Harmon and Katie Grooms. The
setters Dannenbrink and Martin pulled out all the stops with 6 different Spartans hitters registering
kills. Haley Harris and Hannah Aven had the slide working, while Jordan and Luck racked in points
from the outside. Hanna Kuhn and McKenzie Martin tallied kills from the right side position. With
Clements making a late game push, Luck and Aven came up big with a block providing the Spartans
with a 20-16 lead. Hannah Aven ended the match with a kill and the Spartans were able to take
home another Championship title!

In Game two, Frances Dannenbrink started the game off from the serving line and pushed the
Spartans to a 12-0 lead. With Susan Burrows leading the charge, Hannah Aven and Hanna Kuhn
provided powerful support. Lamar was never able to get in the game and Stratford swept them in two.
Spring Branch Invitational Junior Varsity Tournament
As the host site for the JV SBISD tournament, Coach Adcock and the girls did a wonderful job
working effectively and efficiently. The tournament went off without a hitch with special help from the
JV parents. The girls played aggressively and were unstoppable. The Spartans kept their winning
streak going with a 4-0 record for the tournament, and ultimately captured the Championship title!
Spartans vs. Mayde Creek, September 3rd
Thursday night, the Lady Spartans overcame their first obstacle toward obtaining the Championship
by crushing Mayde Creek, 25-6, 25-12. Game one, the Spartans aggressive serving led way to a
great lead; Susan Burrows served for a 6 point run, tallying up two aces. McKenzie Martin also racked
up three aces of her own to extend the lead. Burrows not only dominated from the serving line, she
added to the fire by crushing numerous slides and quick attacks. Mayde Creek did not know what hit
them. In game two, Frances Dannenbrink, Emily Luck and Burrows registered more aces for the
Spartan team. Hannah Aven provided the Spartan offense with kills from quick sets and slides, while
Hailey Harris finished off the Rams with a quick attack from the middle. One down, three to go!
Spartans vs. Cinco Ranch, September 3rd
Cinco Ranch was our second opponent of the tournament and beating Cinco Ranch decisively 25-
14, 25-14 was very sweet. In game one, Stratford came out with a quick lead due to their tough
serving and Cinco’s errors. However, Cinco battled back to tie the score at 7 all; the Spartans
regained the control with a kill from Susan Burrows followed by an ace by Hailey Harris. Burrows
added a kill on a shoot set and Frances Dannenbrink dropped in an ace. The Spartans took off from

game, but the Lady Spartans would not relent. Hailey Harris ended the game with a crushing kill
from a Cinco overpass. In game two, Spartans rushed ahead with kills from Burrows, Harris and
Martin. The Cougars came back from the deficit 13-12 with strong defense and tips dumped in the
middle. The Spartans went back to the serving line and pushed ahead with blocks and kills, while
Cinco had no response. The match was ended with another kill on an overpass, this time by Emily
Luck. Two down, two to go!
Semi-Final Match: Spartans vs. Cy-Creek, September 5th
The Stratford JV team has lost one match thus far, their opponents, Cy-Creek. With revenge on their
minds, the Spartans were cognizant of the impact of this match: go home or play for first place. The
Spartans overpowered Cy-Creek on Saturday, 25-12, 25-21. Stratford was in complete control from
the first point in the first game. Kelsey Harmon served aggressively to deep court; Cy-Creek was
unable to produce a decent pass. The Spartans led a 9-0 run before the Cougars could even score.
Emily Luck extended the lead with a kill from an overpass and a kill from the outside. The Spartans
were up 13-2, when the Cougars attempted to fight back. A block from Brooke Wiggins and Susan
Burrows, then a kill by Wiggins put the game out of reach for the Cougars. The Spartans ended the
game 25-12. Game two, the competition was stiffened; Cy-Creek kept the game tied nine different
times. The Spartans’ scrappy defensive play by Emily Luck, Katie Grooms and Amy Jordan provided
the team with great ammunition. The kills were split up between McKenzie Martin, Susan Burrows,
Emily Luck and Hailey Harris. Amy Jordan stepped up as the kill leader with 8 kills. On to the
Championship game!
Championship Match: Spartans vs. Memorial
The Spartans smashed the Memorial Mustangs 25-18, 25-16 to achieve the 2009 SBISD JV
Tournament Championship. Game one, the Spartan setters’ Frances Dannenbrink and McKenzie
Martin spread the ball around to each attacker to overcome the Mustangs. With kills from Burrows,
Luck, Harris, Martin and Jordan, the Memorial team was constantly kept guessing. Harmon served
up an ace, Harris and Luck came up with back to back kills. Memorial stayed with the Spartans, but
at 12 all Harris stepped back to aggressively and effectively serve and the Mustangs had no answer.
With the score 22-14, blocks from Aven and Martin and a kill by Martin finalized the first game of the
match. Game two, the Spartans jumped ahead to an early lead. First points were registered by Martin
who came up strong with a stuff block and by Burrows with a kill from a quick set in the middle.
Jordan provided a kill for the Spartans’ score on a tip. Memorial committed numerous mistakes that
Stratford capitalized on. Wiggins supplied a kill, while Harris served an ace and the points racked up
to 16-7. A kill from Aven and block from Aven and Martin kept the points coming. Aven received a set
by Dannenbrink and put the ball down for a kill. Martin serves a powerful ace, Harris crushes two
more kills, and Jordan ends the tournament with a kill for the outside. A victory by the Stratford
Spartans of 25-16 ended the day, as well as the Championship title!
The SBISD tournament was a great achievement for the team! Hard work, great effort and support for
one another were great to see. Next up for the Spartans, game Wednesday, September 9 at Seven
Lakes.

JV Stratford vs. Clear Creek
The Stratford Spartans Junior Varsity team recovered quickly from their Friday night deficit and
defeated the Clear Creek Wildcats in three games Tuesday, August 18. Having a short term memory,

their ‘weapons’ hands. Emily Luck led the team in kills, and outstanding performances were made
by Susan Burrows, Haley Harris, Amy Jordan, and McKenzie Martin. Hanna Kuhn provided a wall of
