October 14th update:
District play continued with a home game against Alief Taylor: Oct. 6. 2009
Lindsey Neumann started us off with a bang by serving up 6 unreturned serves! The game was
never in question as Neumann and Katherine Noel made several solid hits. Grace Touchstone’s
serves and sets along with nice middle hits from Katie Dickinson and Hope Wiggins extended the
lead even further. Kelly Ann Craig served nicely securing 5 more points in a row. Noel, Macy Smith
and Holly Heckmann aided in the attack. SHS won decisively 25-12. The next game proved more of
a challenge. We started in the hole but a great kill shot by Tracee Greenwood brought us back to
even. Touchstone continued to serve well in this game including an awesome ace. Wiggins’ block
in the middle along with 2 well timed hits from Heckmann helped seal the victory for SHS with a
final score of 25-22.
Memorial: Oct. 9, 2009
The much anticipated competition against memorial was exciting. Game 1 was full of great volleys
and hard fought points. Craig had a great game with several hits, blocks and digs. Neumann’s kill
shot and bullet-like serves of Touchstone helped the team. SHS found themselves down a few
points late in the game, but a nice defensive play by Jessie Hall and serves from Craig brought the
team to a 25-25 even score. Unfortunately the other team snagged the last two hard fought points
with a final score and close loss of 25-27. Game 2 was a disappointment to the girls. A strong
block in the middle by Smith finally got SHS on the board. But the deficit was too much to
overcome. We’ll be back next time though ready to win! (10-25 final).
Hastings: Oct. 13, 2009
SHS traveled to Alief Hastings to secure a decisive win. Although play seemed sluggish, Alief was
outmatched. Noel, Dickinson made some solid hits. Touchstone and Sarah Bostick helped out
with their serving. SHS dominated both games with a 25-12 and 25-13 wins.
October 7th update:
Tuesday, Sept. 22: District game vs. Northbrook
Game 1: Our SHS Freshman A girls came out to an early lead. The opposition was unable to reach
double digits until we held a 19-10 lead. Strong hits by Katherine Noel and Lindsey Neumann
helped launch the team toward victory. We continued to dominate and finished with a 25-12 win.
Game 2: In Game 2, we again came out to an early lead, extended in large part because of the
serves of Neumann. After great blocks in the middle by Hope Wiggins and good sets by Grace
Touchstone, we extended our lead to 14-9. Libero Jessie Hall came through with many defensive
digs and we ended the game with Touchstone serving it out for a 25-11 win.
Thursday, Sept. 24: Katy ISD Tournament
Game 1 vs. Katy HS: SHS dominated the first few points of the game aided by Neumann serving
for 5 points in a row. This game proved to be an easy win with each girl serving well. The final
score 25-9.
Game 2 vs. Katy HS: We knew Katy would wake up and they did. We found ourselves down 1-6
only a few minutes into the game. Good blocks by Wiggins and Kelly Ann Craig woke us up a little
as we began to rally. Unfortunately Tracee Greenwood was injured when going for the ball. It was
too little too late for this game with a loss to Katy, 16-25.
Game 3 vs. Katy HS: Both teams rallied when the match was on the line, exchanging points back
and forth. The serves of Touchstone helped the team take the lead. Craig helped finish off the
victory with 2 solid spikes. The girls showed what they were made of winning the match, 18-16.
This win allowed the team to advance to the Championship bracket of the tournament.
Katy ISD Tournament continued, Sept. 26: Vs. Bellville HS
Game 1: The girls found themselves in a hole right off the bat. A nice dig by Greenwood and spikes
by Craig and Wiggins helped to get us back in the game. SHS fought back with nice rallies but
struggled to win the points. Neumann assisted the team with beautiful, well-placed spikes.
However, the early Saturday morning game did not prove to be the best. SHS lost 13-25.
Game 2: SHS started slow and gave up several points right away with inconsistent serving. A nice
set by Craig and outside hit by Neumann helped generate some enthusiasm. Defensive player
Hall helped the team keep the ball in play. Greenwood added to the excitement with a beautiful
spike. Macy Smith served great helping SHS win 5 points in a row and closing the score gap to a
margin of 2. Touchstone’s sets, Neumann’s spikes, and Hall’s digs brought us to 19-19. The
excitement built, knowing the match was on the line. Katie Dickinson had a timely block in the
middle. Smith smacked the ball in the middle and a miss in the net by Bellville brought the score to
24-24. Touchstone served twice more ending the game with an ace. SHS took the game (and
nearly gave their fans a heart attack) with a 26-24 win!
Game 3: SHS let down a little for the start of this game, with a score of 1-4 in the first few minutes.
Some good defense by Craig, sets by Touchstone, and kill shots by Neumann brought us to within
one point of the opponent. Wiggins had a great block in the middle and Smith added to the rally
with good serves. The points went back and forth 7-7 and then 8-8. The team then slipped into a 2
point hole. A kill shot in the middle by Smith got us to within 1 point. Touchstone served
fantastically well at the end, aided by a fired-up team. SHS won the match with a heroic 15-13
score!
Vs. Cy-Woods
Game 1: Cy-Woods came out strong and SHS found themselves on the defensive. Down by 6
points, Craig helped out with some nice defensive digs. Touchstone had a strong kill shot from the
middle; and an precise set by Neumann and spike by Touchstone help narrow the gap somewhat.
But Cy-Fair proved too much this time, final score 16-25.
Game 2: SHS came out strong aided by serves from Neumann. However, Cy-Woods had a knack
for placing the ball well and they pulled ahead. Dickinson had some strong hits and Touchstone
and Hall helped the team with their serves. SHS pulled within 2 points of their opponent. But in the
end, Cy Woods picked up some steam and won. Final score, 17-25.
Vs. Cy-Fair
Game 1: Sets by Touchstone and hits by Neumann got the team off to a nice start. But even a
strong block by Touchstone and 2 well placed serves by Craig could not stave off Cy-Fair. Hall
played well at libero and also hit several overhead spikes. SHS rallied well with Cy-Fair but couldn’
t seem to be on the winning end of the point. Points slipped away for a final score of 11-25.
Game 2: Down a few points at the start, Craig made a nice spike to allow SHS to have the serve
back. Sets by Touchstone followed by hits by Neumann helped the team pull up a little. Greenwood
served nicely and got the team within 4 points. Smith helped out with a strong block in the middle.
Neumann set the ball for Touchstone, who made a strong hit. The serves of Touchstone and
Neumann along with solid play from the rest of the team put the score to 21-23. Greenwood had a
beautifully angled overhead and Smith followed with a block in the middle to bring the score to
even. Victory was so close! Unfortunately, Cy-Fair snagged the last two points for a final score of
24-26.
SHS played great in this tournament against some formidable opponents. The girls brought home
a 4th place overall win in the tournament.
Friday, Sept. 25: District play vs. Spring Woods
Game 1: Spring Woods came out strong in the beginning; but serves by Hall assisted in bringing
the score to even at 12-12.
Other great servers included Neumann and Smith. Greenwood finished off several points with
strong spikes. Final score, 25-18
Game 2: Neumann opened the game serving to a strong 6-1 lead. Precise sets by Neumann and
Touchstone along with serves from Wiggins extended the lead to 12-3. Hall and Craig assisted
with defensive moves. Craig also had 2 determined spikes followed by kill shots from Neumann.
Craig ended the game serving and SHS secured the victory with a 25-17 win.
Tuesday, Sept. 29: District play vs. Elsik
Game 1: SHS traveled to Elsik this week for their district match-up. Play opened very evenly, each
team exchanging points until the score reached 7-7. But, our SHS girls proved too much for them
to handle. Each member of the team, including some nice serves from Holly Heckmann and good
hits from Sarah Bostick, helped bring the team to a 13-9 lead. Strong hitters Noel and Neumann
also assisted in the effort. Elsik failed to return many serves after that and SHS won decisively, 25-
11.
Game 2: Our talented girls game out strong again the 2nd game, pulling to a 15-6 lead. Everyone
played well, placing the ball in spots that the opponent could not get. Elsik made some
adjustments and pulled within 2 points. However, SHS decided that enough was enough. The
serving was strong and led to a final score of 25-18.
September 16th update:
Freshman A team competed in the FBISD tournament on Thursday, Sept. 10th and Saturday, Sept.
12th and won the consolation bracket.
Won all three matches on Saturday
SHS vs Hightower 25-23, 21–25, 15-9
SHS vs Hastings 25 -8, 25-13
SHS vs Northbrook 25–13, 25-14
Also, Friday night, Sept. 11th, was our first district game against Alief Taylor and won those as well.
Freshman A vs Memorial, September 15
Game #1: 20-25
Game #2: 15-25
The Freshman A team came out strong against the Mustangs in the first game. It was a real nail
biter and fun to watch the girls play so well. Unfortunately that close game went to the Mustangs.
The second game was not quite so close! The Lady Spartans got down quickly due some
strategic short serves by the Mustangs. With that initial rattling and the subsequent roaring MHS
fans, our A team took another tough loss. We fully expect to make adjustments and improve our
student fan base when we meet them on our home courts for the next match-up.
