November 19th update:
SHS v Cinco Ranch, 11/14, Regional Finals
THIS WILL BE BRIEF BECAUSE THE HEARTACHE IS STILL FRESH!!
On Saturday the Stratford faced one of the few opponents that can play equally as sound
fundamentally as our Spartans, with a chance to advance to the state tournament on the line.  The
teams split games one and two, 16-25 and 25-22 respectively. The Spartans lost pivotal game
three, surrendering a late lead and the momentum; 25-22. Game four was close throughout but the
Cougars managed to win each long volley down the stretch, including a net ball on serve to clinch
the match 25-19. Ultimately the Spartans fought valiantly but could never generate any sustained
rhythm against a quality opponent that played just a little better that day. There were many times
where a point win here or there may have changed the flow of the contest but it was not meant to be.

In Conclusion
Our Lady Spartans enjoyed tremendous success throughout the season, winning one tournament,
finishing second in another, and in the top eight (76 team field) in their third. The team was
consistently resided in the top 10 in both the Greater Houston area and the state rankings.
Consistently the smallest team on the court, credit goes to the coaches for assembling a team that
succeeded by played suffocating team defense, incredibly well balanced offense, and relying on
the ingredient that all great teams have…chemistry.

The seniors must now move forward having been a part of the Spartan Volleyball tradition. Our
underclassman will no doubt carry on the success because of their talent and spirit. As Volleyball
Liaisons, Cynthia and I are humbled that we were able to tag along for the ride.

On behalf of the parents, coaches and players, we want to thank Stratford America for their
tremendous support of the volleyball program. Fans in the stands, cheering for the good guys, are
a huge part of all that the team accomplished and very much what makes Stratford a special place.
Of all the memories the team has from this year, the one that will stay with them longest is the
passion and enthusiasm displayed by the Spartan community toward the team. Thanks again.

SHS v Dulles, 11/13, Regional Semifinals
For the second consecutive year our Lady Spartans advanced to the “Sweet Sixteen” of the state
volleyball tournament, this year facing a powerful Dulles team. The Lady Vikings entered the
contest with consecutive come from behind victories and a tide of momentum.

Like the previous playoff match, the Spartans came out a little unsteady and surrendered game
one 15-25. In game two, however, Stratford jumped out to an early 13 point advantage with crisp
passing and precision attacks. Dulles fought back and closed the lead to as little as six points
before the Spartans claimed the 25-19 victory. Game three was much tighter with both teams
executing their offense and making stellar defensive plays. Late in the set, the Spartans capitalized
on a series of blocks by our front row to gain a little breathing room, eventually winning 25-21.

The seesaw contest continued in game four as Stratford held an early lead only to allow the Vikings
to tie the game late and go ahead on uncharacteristic Spartan miscues. Consecutive questionable
calls at 24-24 yielded a 24-26 Dulles victory. Our Lady Spartans left little doubt as to the eventual
winner in the decisive fifth set controlling tempo and playing focused volleyball. Although the
resilient Vikings made a late run, Stratford finally closed the game and match 15-12.

November 12th update:
Stratford vs. Katy Taylor, 11/11, Region III Quarterfinals
Fortunately the playoffs are not about style points and all about winning because the Spartans
captured an often times ugly victory over a scrappy Katy Taylor squad. Throughout the four set
match the Spartans had trouble maintaining momentum, occasionally looked vulnerable, but were
at times dominating.

Game one was a lesson in how not to play volleyball as the Spartans were slow on defense and
inconsistent on offense. After exchanging points through the early stages of the set, the Mustangs
scored 16 of the next 20 points and won the first set 25-13.

The Spartans turned the tables on Taylor in game two, winning by an equally lopsided margin of 25-
12. An extended service run by Mary Ellen Luck and sparkling defensive saves by Amira Elkhatib
powered the Spartans to victory. Stratford started fast in game three as Kelli Tomlinson teamed
with Lindsay Daniel and Audrey Luecken for several thunderous kills. Unfortunately, we let a
commanding nine point led slip away and the Mustangs pulled even at 22 which led to a Stratford
timeout. After exchanging the next two points, Olivia Mohle served the Spartans to a 25-23 victory.

Much like the previous set, the Spartans jumped out to and early game four lead. Susan Burrows,
playing in only her fourth varsity game, got the offense going with consecutive well placed kills;
while Rebecca Grace ensured that the offensive explosion would continue as she assisted on five
of the next eight points. As was true in the previous two games, our athletic front line repeatedly
blocked the Mustang attackers; preventing them from gaining confidence or momentum. Lindsay
led all Spartans with 4.5 blocks. The Mustangs battled down the stretch but could not overcome the
early deficit and the Spartans clinched the set and match 25-16.

Our Lady Spartans are now scheduled to play Ft Bend Dulles Friday night at the Campbell Center
@ 6pm.

Stratford vs. Atascosita, 11/6, Playoffs-Round 2
Our Lady Spartans traveled north to play Atascosita in Round 2 of the Region III playoffs and came
away with a convincing three set victory 25-22, 25-12, and 25-13. The Spartans played a little
tentative early as they attempted to find an offensive rhythm, but outscored the Eagles 12-5 down
the stretch to take game one.

Stratford controlled games two and three with our outside hitting duo of Mary Ellen Luck and Taylor
Miller combining for 20 kills, 33 digs and 8 service aces. When Atascosita tried to favor our
outsides, Lindsay Daniel, Olivia Mohle and Audrey Luecken made them pay with 15 more kills. This
balanced offensive attack was orchestrated by Kelli Tomlinson and Rebecca Grace, dishing out 20
and 9 assists respectively.

Conversely, the Eagles could never get their offense going as the Spartans played sparkling
defense at the net and on the back line the entire contest. Team defense, limited errors and
efficient offense will be paramount as the Spartans continue their playoff run.

October 28th update:
Post-Season
Our Lady Spartans concluded district play with an 11-1 record and an impressive overall record of
28-7. Stratford is currently ranked 4th in the Greater Houston area and 9th in the state. The team is
off this Tuesday allowing them to prepare for a busy weekend before beginning the playoffs next
week.

On Friday, we play the highly ranked Woodlands team in a playoff warm up match, 5:30 at the
Campbell Center.

On Saturday, noon we play memorial at their place for a key match to decide the first place seed
from our district. The support of the Stratford community has been instrumental in the team’s
success this year. We look forward to seeing GREEN in the house Saturday afternoon.

Elsik at SHS, 10/23
Stratford concluded district play with a match up against the playoff bound Lady Rams. With
homecoming a few hours away and a motivated Elsik squad visiting, there was definitely cause for
concern. Fortunately, the Spartans came out relaxed but focused, quickly dashing any hopes the
Rams had of an upset. An early service run by Taylor Miller and terrific passing from Amira Elkatib
got the Spartans out to an early lead and eventual 25-13 victory in Game 1.

The offense got rolling in Game 2 as Kelli Tomlinson recorded many of her match leading 16
assists in this set; teaming with Lindsay Daniel for 6 kills. After losing game two 25-12, Elsik
started the third set with more energy, but blocks by Mark Ellen Luck and Audrey Luecken slowed
the Ram attack. Assists by Rebecca Grace to Olivia Mohle, who finished with 7 kills, allowed the
Spartans to widen their lead and they cruised to another 25-12 victory.

SHS at Spring Woods, 10/20
For the third consecutive match our Lady Spartans were on the road for a district contest, this time
against SBISD foe Spring Woods. Stratford easily defeated the Lady Tigers 25-10, 25-13, and 25-
15; behind excellent play from the entire team. Nine Spartans recorded kills with Mary Ellen Luck
leading the way with 9; followed by Olivia Mohle (6); Lindsay Daniel (5); Audrey Luecken and Taylor
Miller (4); Abbey Jackson (2); and Hayley Stevens, Rebecca Grace, and Kara Lechtenberger (1).

Solid passing throughout the match, including digs by Emily Josey and Lindsay Fowler, triggered
the offense as Kelli Tomlinson tallied 13 assists with Hayley Church adding 11 more and Rebecca
Grace 8. The Lady Spartans also benefited from two service aces each from Emily Lynch, Lindsay
Daniel, Hayley Church and Olivia Mohle.

October 21st update:
SHS at Hastings 10/13
The Lady Spartans traveled to Alief to battle Hastings, fresh off the emotional match against
memorial. Stratford showed little signs of a letdown as they won in three sets over the Lady Bears.
Serving errors, which have become an annoying trend doing district competition, kept the score
close early in game one; but crisp passing led to numerous offensive opportunities as the
Spartans closed out the set 25-14. Game two was highlighted by an extended service run by Mary
Ellen Luck which propelled the team to a 25-9 victory. The inspired play by Hastings made game
three the most competitive of the evening but momentum changing defensive plays by Kim Djuvik
and Emily Josey led the Spartans to a decisive 25-19 victory.

SHS at Northbrook 10/16
Behind a dominating performance in game one, Stratford sweep the best of five matches against
the Lady Raiders to remain in a first place tie atop the district. Our Lady Spartans easily won the
first set 25-9, before losing focus in game two allowing Northbrook to stay close. Stratford
eventually won 25-18 and then closed the match out in game three 25-7. The Spartan team depth
was evident as every player made significant contributions on offense and defense.

October 14th update:
Alief Taylor @ SHS, 10/6
Stratford defeated Alief Taylor in three games to capture their second victory over the Lions in
district play, 25-17, 25-18, and 25-14. The Lions are a scary match up because of their height and
athleticism, but the Spartans used a stingy defense and timely offense to claim the sweep.

The Spartans controlled game one throughout as Kelli Tomlinson got the offense going early,
finishing with a team high 22 assists. Game two found the Spartans behind early before turning up
the defensive intensity and forcing Taylor into mistakes. Amira Elkatib controlled the back row with
steady passing while accumulating 12 digs.

The Lady Lions never contended in the decisive game three as our hitters found holes around the
three six footers manning the net for Taylor. Mary Ellen Luck lead the offensive attack with 12 kills
while Taylor Miller added 10 more.

Memorial @ SHS, 10/9
WOW!!! After losing a heartbreaking match to the dreaded mustangs in week one of district play,
our Lady Spartans finally got the opportunity to exact a little payback on the district rival. The five set
victory was closely contested as the Spartans and mustangs proved records mean nothing when it
comes to this heated border skirmish.

The Spartans were obviously a little too pumped up in game one and committed many costly errors
in surrendering game one 22-25. The Spartans began to settle down in game two winning by an
equal margin, 25-22. The offense started to find its rhythm as Kelli Tomlinson (35 assists) and
Hayley Church (14 assists) kept the mustang front row off balance by assisting on kills to six
different Spartan attackers. Unfortunately we lost game three, 20-25, as the mustangs won several
key points down the stretch temporarily frustrating our Spartan squad.

Game four was a different story however as the Spartans; facing elimination, another devastating
upset and two consecutive match losses to the memorial; played their most complete game of the
night. The defense was spectacular as Lindsay Daniel, Audrey Luecken, Kara Lechtenberger, and
Olivia Mohle controlled the action at the net; while Amira Elkatib and Taylor Miller (30 digs piece)
kept the memorial attacks from hitting the ground. Olivia led the team in blocks with 4.5 followed by
Mary Ellen with 3.5 blocks. Kelli and Rebecca Grace (15 assists) triggered key offensive runs that
helped Stratford maintain a comfortable lead until a late memorial run tied the game at 24-24. The
Spartans regrouped to win the next two points and the game 26-22.

In game five the pressure started to show on the faces and in the play of the mustangs with the
Spartans finally clinching the match 15-9. The statistics tell much of the story offensively as four
Spartans tallied double digit kills lead by 22 kills by Mary Ellen. Taylor contributed 15 kills, Lindsay
an efficient 13 kills on only 26 attacks, and Audrey 10 kills.

This was a huge victory that will help the team regain the momentum and confidence developed in
the grueling non-district schedule; and keep our hopes alive for the district title. Stratford and
memorial will play a tie breaker at the end of the season if both teams negotiate the rest of the
schedule without a loss.

October 7th update:
Northbrook: 09/22:
The varsity Lady Spartans defeated an undersized Northbrook team in 3 straight games by scores
of 25-15, 25-12 and 25-10.  A sluggish start by Stratford kept the Lady Raiders close in game one
but our consistent ball control, including 5 digs by Lindsay Fowler, allowed the Spartans to pull
away in the late stages of the set. In game two, the Lady Raiders once again started strong but
consecutive kills by Olivia Mohle, Krissy Denby and Kara Lechtenberger provided a comfortable
margin and propelled the team to victory. Game three was controlled throughout as Audrey
Luecken recorded three of her five kills in the deciding game.

Spring Woods. 9/25
Facing a second SBISD opponent in a row, the Spartans captured a crisp three set victory 25-9, 25-
11, and 25-8.  A nicely balanced offensive attack triggered by 12 assists from Kelli Tomlinson and 7
more from Rebecca Grace; led to kills by ten different players. The Lady Tigers never challenged as
Stratford’s defense squashed any attempts by Spring Woods to generate momentum.

Taylor Miller recorded a team leading 7 services aces. Kim Djuvik contributed several stellar
defensive plays from the back row. Hayley Church tied her career high with a decisive kill to end the
match.

Elsik, 9/29
After playing at home the last three matches, our Lady Spartans traveled to Alief to battle an athletic
Elsik squad. The Rams, the most skilled of the three Alief teams, lead Stratford for most of the first
game until our offense found its rhythm; which led to a 25-20 win. Games two and three were
slightly easier as the Spartans won both games convincingly, 25-11 and 25-17. Strong serving by
Lindsay Daniels (4 aces), explosive kills from Mary Ellen Luck and solid defense from Amira
Elkhatib (15 digs) highlighted the match. The team appears to be regaining the chemistry that
propelled them to so much early season success.

The Lady Spartans have now completed the first half of district play with a 5-1 record; 21-6 overall.
District play resumes Tuesday, 10/6.

September 23rd update:
Memorial, 9/11
UGH!!! Our Lady Spartans lost a five set match on the road against a fired up memorial team. The
ugly truth is the mustangs prevailed in the hard fought contest by committing fewer errors, playing
possibly their best of the year and feeding off the energy of their home crowd.

Stratford won the first game 25-23, after trailing for much on the match, behind the sparkling
defense of Amira Elkhatib and Mary Ellen Luck. The Spartans lost a pivotal game two after falling
behind early again, rallying to game point, before ultimately falling 26-28. Boosted by the
confidence gained from the game two victory, the mustangs won game three fairly convincingly, 25-
18.

Finally, with their backs against the wall, the Spartans played their best game of the evening
winning 25-19. Kelli Tomlinson, contributing a match high 33 assists, got the offense going and
the Spartans played the cohesive brand of volleyball that has been their signature throughout the
season. Unfortunately we were not able to capture victory in game five, losing 12-15. Mary Ellen led
the team with 23 kills and 23 digs.

Our Lady Spartans now must negotiate the next few weeks of district play without stumbling, before
getting another shot at the mustangs at home.

Hastings, 9/14
Fresh off the disappointing loss Tuesday night, Stratford took care of business against an
outgunned Hastings team, winning in three sets 25-8, 25-9, and 25-10. The match was won at the
service line, featuring14 consecutive serves by Kelli Tomlinson and a similar run of 7 by Olivia
Mohle. Hayley Church (5), Abbey Jackson (3), Lindsay Fowler (3), Emily Lynch (1), and Rebecca
Grace (1) also recorded service aces in the match.

Each Spartan player contributed to the win as Hastings was no match for our depth and
experience. The Lady Spartans are slowly getting healthy again after getting banged up in the brutal
non district schedule.

The schedule continues this week with homes games against Northbrook and Spring Woods.

September 16th update:
Alief Taylor, 9/11
Our Lady Spartans opened district play on Friday with a straight set victory over a scrappy Lady
Lions squad. Taylor stayed close in all three games but were overmatched by our Spartans now
ranked #2 in the area.

The Spartans, playing without two key players for the second consecutive match, were behind most
of the first game before taking control late and eventually winning set one. The second and third
sets were very similar with the Lions playing tough athletic defense to hang with Spartans but not
able to overcome the solid team effort by Stratford.

The straight set victory sets up a showdown on Tuesday, September 15th with district rival
Memorial. A big victory on the road is key in claiming a district title

Seven Lakes, 9/7
The Spartans traveled to Katy to battle a motivated Seven Lakes squad in our last tune-up before
district begins.  Team depth and versatility were on display as the Spartans were without the
services of two starters. Stratford prevailed in a five set nail-biter 27-29, 25-19, 17-25, 25-14, 15-11.

The Seven Lakes Spartans played well at the net throughout the first three games of the match and
led Stratford 2 games to 1 before the our Lady Spartans begin to solve the Seven Lakes defense.
Mary Ellen Luck, playing her first match as a middle blocker, partnered with Taylor Miller for 42 digs
to frustrate the opponent’s offense. Kelli Tomlinson got our offense going mid-match and
contributed a team high 40 kills by moving the ball around the Seven Lakes defense; while Audrey
Luecken’s  12 kills and 10.5 blocks kept the Spartans in each set.

In game four the Spartans took control of the match, powered by the attack of Kara Lechtenberger
who led the balanced offense with 14 kills. After an easy victory in game four the Stratford claimed
the match with a tough game five win. Abbey Jackson, starting for the first time this year at outside
hitter, contributed several key kills and ably handled the Seven Lakes service game.  This
shorthanded victory over a playoff bound opponent should provide momentum and confidence
going into district play.

September 9th update:
Lamar, 9/1/09
The Lady Spartans tired and a little bruised from the Pearland tourney, defeated Lamar in three
games. Stratford was never challenged in the contest and used this opportunity to experiment with
different lineups and continue to develop depth at all positions.

The Spartans got out to a quick start in game one with strong defense and crisp passing and
cruised to a 25-13 victory. Lamar started game two with a flurry and matched the Spartans point for
point until several service aces allowed Stratford to extend their lead and prevail 25-12.

We closed out the match with another 25-12 victory featuring multiple kills by Hayley Stevens and
Krissy Denby. Like game two Lamar stayed close early but consistent defense on the back line,
lead by Emily Lynch, Emily Josey, and Abbey Jackson, created offensive opportunities which lead to
easy points.

Kingwood Tournament, 9/3/09
For the fifth consecutive year the Lady Spartans finished second in the Kingwood Varsity
Tournament losing in the finals to the Woodlands, ranked #1 in the greater Houston area. Another
strong showing in the last tournament of the year was particular satisfying because Stratford was
competing without three year varsity middle blocker Lindsay Daniel. Lindsay sprained her ankle
last weekend and her talent and experience are impossible to replace.

On Thursday the Spartans opened tournament play by defeating Cypress Springs, 25-15 and 25-
13. The Spartans were paced by Kelli Tomlinson’s 13 assists and Kim Djuvik’s six digs. The
second match of the evening was much tighter as an athletic Klein Oak squad beat Stratford in the
first game of the match, 19-25, before surrendering the next two games to the Spartans, 26-24 and
25-18. Mary Ellen Luck led the offensive attack with 15 kills and was a force on defense with 23
digs. Amira Elkhatib provided steady passing throughout and finished with 7 digs.

On Saturday morning the Spartans faced tournament host Kingwood, knocking the Mustangs out of
the championship bracket in two straight sets, 26-24 and 25-21. Lindsay Fowler controlled the
defensive tempo with numerous saves, tallying 10 digs; with Hayley Church and Rebecca Grace
combining for 11 assists. The Spartans also benefited from solid blocking from Audrey Luecken
who led the team in this category during the tourney.

This set up a finals match of #1 versus # 2 with the Lady Highlanders prevailing by winning key
points down the stretch of both games. Taylor Miller received Outstanding Defensive Player honors
while Olivia Mohle and Mary Ellen Luck were named to the All Tournament team.

Our Lady Spartans visit Seven Lakes Wednesday night before opening district play Friday on the
road against Alief Taylor.

September 2nd update:
Pearland Volleyball Classic, 8/27 – 8/29
Our Lady Spartans finished 8th in the 76 team field of the Pearland tournament. Each year this
tournament is generally regarded as the premier volleyball event in the state; and this year’s event
exceeded expectations. Stratford battled their way to elite 8 before losing a heartbreaker to eventual
tournament champion JJ Pearce. In doing so our Spartans proved that they can compete with, and
be considered one of, the top teams in the state. The team also gained valuable experience that
will benefit us come playoff time.

Thursday included pool play games against SA Clark, Grapevine and Cinco Ranch. All three
matches were tight throughout and the Spartans finished 2-1 and earned the 2nd seed from our
pool. We defeated Clark in three games 21-25, 25-15, and 25-22. This match was highlighted by
eight effective kills and 4.5 blocks by Lindsay Daniels. We prevailed in our match against
Grapevine 26-24, 26-24. Hayley Church directed the offense with 15 assists. The last match of the
evening did not start until 10:30 pm and the Spartans lost to Cinco Ranch in three close games
with Rebecca Grace tallying 15 assists.

The Spartans were back on the court Friday morning and won two more close matches to advance
to the final eight. We defeated SA O’Connor in three sets behind Mary Ellen Luck’s 19 kills and 20
assists from Kelli Tomlinson. The second game against Clear Brook was our easiest of the
tournament and we still only won by scores of 25-23 and 25-20. Audrey Luecken, Olivia Mohle and
Kara Lechtenberger combined on several blocks throughout the day to keep the opponent’s
offenses in check.

Saturday morning’s game against JJ Pearce was one of the best played volleyball games of the
weekend but for the first time in the tournament the Spartans were unable to closeout a match they
controlled late; losing 25-22, 19-25, and 27-25.  Taylor Miller and Mary Ellen provided a productive
outside attack with 17 and 15 kills respectively. Kim Djuvik contributed defensively with 15 digs in
her most extensive action of the tournament.

With a minimum 8th place finish locked up, the rest of Saturday was about experimenting with
different rotations that will be beneficial for the remainder of the season. Abbey Jackson, Hayley
Stevens and Emily Lynch made noteworthy contributions in the final matches. Ultimately tired legs
and an emotional hangover from the Pearce game resulted in losses to both Cinco Ranch and
Flower Mound but overall a successful tournament in which the team can continue to build.

Mary Ellen was named to the All-Tournament team.

The Lady Spartans host Lamar Tuesday night at 6:30pm and then play in the Kingwood Varsity
Tournament starting on Thursday.

August 27th update:
Varsity Lady Spartans vs. Katy, 8/25
Our Lady Spartans defeated the Katy Tigers in front of a lively home crowd on Tuesday evening 25-
16, 25-23, and 25-19. The home court advantage was instrumental in helping the team capture
there first three set victory of the season.

The Spartans controlled game one from the outset with crisp passing and balanced attack
orchestrated by setters Kelli Tomlinson and Hayley Church. Kelli finished with a 23 assist while
Hayley added 10 more.

Game two was much tougher with Katy maintaining a lead throughout the game. A few Spartan
errors and a scrappy Tiger hitting game put Stratford in a 16-21 hole late in the game. Strong
serves and a more focused defense led to a 7-1 scoring run and the eventual victory.

Game three was close as well but consistent passing led to several kills and a game three, match
clinching win. Mary Ellen Luck had a team high 14 kills followed by Taylor Miller with 12 more.
Rebecca Grace and Olivia Mohle were two of the five Spartans with at least 5 digs.

The 76 team Pearland Classic starts Thursday with the top 10 teams in Texas all apart of the field.
This tournament will be another excellent opportunity for the team to compete against the very best
in the state. This is the website for Pearland Volleyball Tourney http://www.pvbclassic.com/ . We are
Division 16 Court 7.

In case you missed it in Monday's paper, the Houston Chronicle named Mary Ellen Luck Volleyball
Player of the Week - what a great honor!

August 24th update:
Spring Branch Invitational Tournament,  8/20-22
The Spring Branch tournament title is back in the hands of its rightful owners as the Lady Spartans
claimed first place on Saturday afternoon. In capturing the championship the Spartans won five
matches while giving up only one set. Our balanced offensive attack featured three different players
leading the team in kills over the three days with no player recording double digit kills in any one
match. Our gritty defense tallied over 30 blocks and 100 digs in controlling each opponent’s
offense.

The Lady Spartans opened the tournament on Thursday by overpowering St Agnes 25-16, 25-10. In
the second game Thursday evening, we surrendered our only set of the weekend to Cypress Falls
but still won the exciting match 25-22, 21-25, and 25-19. The victory against a very tall, athletic Cy
Falls team served as a momentum builder going into the next three matches.

On Friday afternoon Stratford defeated state 4A ranked Magnolia to set up a final four of Texas
powerhouse programs. On Saturday the Spartans beat Cypress Woods and Clear Creek, both
ranked in the top ten in the state, to clinch the tournament title for the first time since 2006. The win
against Clear Creek in the finals was especially sweet considering our recent history against the
Wildcats, including a loss last Tuesday night.

Tournament honors were awarded to Taylor Miller, All Tournament; Kelli Tomlinson, Most Valuable
Setter; and Mary Ellen Luck, Tournament Most Valuable Player. Although these were the official
tournament awards, the Lady Spartans captured the championship with a total team effort. While
each of our opponents had a couple of star players, no other team matched the Spartans number
of offensive options and defensive intensity.

The Spartans play at home this Tuesday against Katy at 6:30pm

August 22nd News Flash:
CONGRATULATIONS LADIES!!!  Our Spartans were victorious this weekend beating #1 area
ranked Cy Woods this morning in the semi-finals, they then defeated #2 ranked Clear Creek to take
the Spring Branch ISD Volleyball Classic championship. Kelli Tomlinson was named Outstanding
Setter, Taylor Miller was named to the all-tournament team and Mary Ellen Luck received the Most
Valuable Player award!  -Look for the game summary in the next newsletter.

August 19th update:
Varsity Stratford vs. Cypress Creek, 8/14
Our Lady Spartans defeated Cypress Creek last Friday night in four games to capture their second
victory in as many games. The Lady Spartans displayed a balanced offense (46 kills) and a feisty
defense (19 blocks and 12 digs) to subdue the Cougars.

In game one the Spartans fell behind early to the fired up Lady Cougars but managed to rally for
win 25-21. The second game was easily won by Stratford, 25-14 as our offense started to find a
rhythm behind the sets of Kelli Tomlinson, who finished with 25 assists in the four game match.
Rebecca Grace also contributed eight assists and Hayley Church four more.

We surrendered game three to the Cougars, 21-25, with uncharacteristic errors but rebounded to
win game four 25-21. As was the case most of the match, the Cougars had no answer for the
athletic net play of the Spartans, which included eight blocks by Olivia Mohle, and at least 2 blocks
by all Spartan defenders. Lindsay Daniel contributed 4.5 blocks to go along with her team leading
14 kills. Audrey Luecken added 9 more kills.

When the ball did get beyond our front row; Amira Elkhatib, Mary Ellen Luck and Taylor Miller all
made numerous defensive plays to keep the ball in play. And, Emily Josey, making her varsity
debut, scored two service aces.

Varsity vs. Clear Creek, 8/18
The Varsity Lady Spartans suffered their first defeat of the year at the hands of the state ranked
Clear Creek Wildcats; the same opponent that eliminated Stratford from the 2008 playoffs. Playing
on the road for the first time this year the Spartans could not maintain leads throughout the match
and ultimately loss in four games; 19-25, 25-19, 25-20 and 25-20.

All four matches included scoring runs by each team, but Clear Creek managed to score
momentum changing points down the stretch of games one, three, and four. Too many unforced
errors ultimately cost our Lady Spartans but matching the Wildcats almost point  for point should
give the Spartans confidence that they can compete with, and defeat, the top teams in the area.

The blocking of Lindsay Daniel, Kara Lechtenberger, Audrey Luecken, and Olivia Mohle kept the
power hitting Wildcats in check much of the evening. Team stat leaders for the match were Mary
Ellen Luck, with 11 kills and 6 blocks, Taylor Miller with 19 kills and Kelli Tomlinson with 23
assists. Lindsay, Audrey, and Olivia also contributed 7 kills each. Hayley Church added 18 assists.

August 12th update:
8/11/2009 Pearland at SHS
Our Varsity Lady Spartans opened the 2009 season with a hard fought victory over the Pearland
Oilers who are ranked #9 in the Houston area. Stratford, ranked #7 in the area, gave us a glimpse
of the promising upcoming season by consistently winning key points to capture the “Best of 5”
match in 4 games.

The Lady Spartans won games one and two by identical scores of 26-24. Both games were close
the entire way with neither team able to score more than three consecutive points. Game three was
equally close but Pearland managed to extend the match one more game by winning 22-25. In
game four, the Spartans came out with a renewed focus and determination and were never
challenged. Although Pearland made a late run to make the score close, the Spartans dominated
winning 25-20.

Taylor Miller, 19 kills, and Mary Ellen Luck, 17 kills, paced the Spartan offensive attack. Lindsey
Daniel (10 kills, 4.5 blocks) and Olivia Mohle (4 kills and 3 blocks) controlled the net the entire
game. Audrey Luecken and Kara Lechtenberger were a defensive force throughout the match with
4.5 blocks and 2 blocks respectively. The setters were spectacular in distributing the ball for 69
total assists. Kelli Tomlinson led the way with 40 assists. Hayley Church contributed 21 assists
and Rebecca Grace 8 more. Amira Elkhatib patrolled the back line and quarterbacked the defense
with 7 digs.
