| March 8th update: The freshman took on Westside High School at our house yesterday in a dual match. The Spartans came through with flying colors and handed the Wolves a 13-3 loss. Leo Montero teamed with Mallory Edwards to stage a nice come from behind win in mixed doubles after being down 6-2 early in the pro set. Evan Stone, Alex Newton and Isabel Deakins all secured singles victories without losing more than one game. Also lining up in the win column was: Lukas Falk, Shayan Garagozolou, Kevin Kim, Will Choice, and Olivia Pope. Great job team. March 1st update: February 24th The team traveled to Pasadena to take on the Dobie Longhorns in a dual match Dobie turned out to be a worthy opponent and proved why they were the fall 22 5A District champs in fall team tennis. We dug ourselves a bit of a hole in the beginning doubles matches and saw Dobie roll up a 5-2 advantage. Our number one boys team of Lukas Falk and Shayan Gharagozolou pulled a close 8-6 win out, while our number one girls went back and forth before narrowly losing 9-7. The line two girls team of Isabel Deakins and Meredith Park stepped up to deliver a nice 8-5 victory. The Longhorns continued to rack up a big lead in singles, with Stratford falling behind to 8-3 before rallying to close the gap to 10-9 at one point near the end of the contest. Our girls played particularly well in singles, winning 6 of the 8 singles contests. The boys did not fare quite as well, although four of our boys losses were by slim margins. Lukas and Shayan kept their unbeaten streak alive by winning the top two spots for the guys. On another day the Spartans could have prevailed, but until then, we congratulate Dobie on a good effort and look forward to seeing them again in the future. February 19th update: The sun peeked its head out finally after a week of dismal conditions to give the freshman decent weather as they traveled to the Woodlands to compete in an invitational on Tuesday, 2/16. Sixteen teams from the greater Houston area were in attendance, including some top notch programs that represent the northern section of our area. All but one of our divisions came away with at least one win. Lukas Falk, who has been consistently playing some good tennis since coming to us from Switzerland led the freshman with wins over Cinco Ranch and College Park on his way to the finals of the “A” singles bracket. We had a couple of tough first round losses, but re-mounted the horse and rode it to a winning record by reaching the finals in consolation: Kevin Kim/ boy’s “B” singles, Raphael Sauvagnac & Will Choice/boy’s “B” doubles and Olivia Pope with Isabel Deakins in girl’s “A” doubles. Chipping in additional team points were Meredith Park and Sarah Boyle who both reached the quarterfinals in girls singles. Good effort Freshmen! February 12th update: The JV and Freshman tennis teams combined Wednesday, February 10th to compete in their first invitational of the spring season. Despite challenging weather, the Spartans emerged as one of the best teams in the field of twenty teams that competed in the Cy Fair Invitational, placing among the top three. Leading the pack was the JV doubles team of Emma McRae and Nicole Quintana who knocked off a strong Klein team in the first round on their way to claiming the Doubles Championship and Jessie Hall who went undefeated in winning the JV girls singles title. Meredith Park led all freshmen with a trip to the singles finals in her division. Our teams had several players making deep runs to the Semifinals: Billy Strong – JV singles, Joel Sanchez/Austin Pullin – JV doubles, Alyssa Riedel/Erin Sun – JV doubles, Dawson Morby/Nick First – Freshman doubles, Will Fritz/Bradley Morris – Freshman doubles, Alex Weber, Johnny Fickert/ Fernando Trujano, and Shayan Gharagozolou all turned in respectable performances in seeing Quarterfinal action. Recovering from their first round losses to win their next four matches and place first in the consolation bracket were JV players Laurel Lampasas and Kelsey Hunter in the JV – “A” and “B” divisions of singles play. Lukas Falk also reached the finals in consolation singles for the freshman. Chipping in additional team points for Stratford were consolation semifinalists: Andy Oe/Sabrina Hong – JV mixed doubles, Mallory Edwards – Freshman singles, Olivia Pope/Isabel Deakins – Freshman doubles and Evan Stone/Mary Elizabeth Schnake – Freshman mixed doubles. All in all, a rewarding start for our sub-varsity and another reason to continue to be Stratford Proud. Way to go players! September 23rd update: The freshmen traveled to Memorial last Wednesday and were actually playing their first match of the fall. I was extremely proud of our hustle and sportsmanship throughout the contest. We have a lot of potential with our players and there were some bright spots in the match. Five of the doubles matches were split sets going to super tie breaks to decide the outcome. In singles, Sarah Boyle was dominating, dispatching her opponent without losing a single game. Kudos to Leo Montero who also snagged a nice straight set win. |
