March 9th update:
Varsity – 3/3/10
Stratford 15  Alief Taylor 0

The Lady Spartans got the district season off to a fast start with a 4 inning 15-0 victory over Alief
Taylor. Victoria Bravo got the start and faced the minimum over 3 innings.  Brynna Lucas threw
the 4th inning and only allowed one base runner.  We picked up 2 runs in the 1st when Heather
Hummel and Shannon Fenton came home on Lela Crump’s single.  In the 2nd inning we got 5
more runs with Kathryn West, Heather Hummel, and Shannon Fenton getting singles and Lela
Crump stroked a double in the left center gap. Other base runners reached via Taylor errors
which helped contribute to the run production.  In the 3rd Kathryn West, Lauren Tinkler, and Lacie
Stevens got consecutive singles.  Ellie Tendall laid down a beautiful bunt to advance the runners
and beat the throw to 1st.  Again, Taylor errors and wild pitches allowed us to score six more
runs in the 3rd. In the 4th we run ruled them when we picked up 2 more runs on walks and back
to back singles from Ellie Tendall and Heather Hummel.

Varsity – 3/5/10
Memorial 3 Stratford 2

Friday night we had a great game against Memorial and even though we lost by 1 run the girls
put forth a valiant effort. Lela Crump pitched the entire game and kept the score close from start
to finish. Memorial picked up 1 run in the 2nd and another in the 3rd. In the 5th inning Victoria
Bravo singled up the middle, Kathryn West followed with a line drive to left for a single, Victoria
stole 3rd and Lauren Tinkler’s sacrifice brought Victoria home. In the 6th inning Lela Crump
reached on an error, Sarah Kitterman singled, Victoria Bravo singled to load the bases and
Kathryn West squibbed a single between 2nd and 1st to bring Ellie Tendall home (running for
Lela) to tie the game. Memorial picked up 1 run in the bottom of the 6th. In the top of the 7th
Lauren Tinkler singled to right (Ellie Tendall substituted to run), Sara Moreman sacrificed Ellie to
2nd, Heather Hummel sacrificed Ellie to 3rd but we left her on 3rd to end the game. It was an
exciting game even if we lost by a run.

Varsity – March 4 & 6
Lamar Consolidated Tournament

On Thursday we dropped 2 games, one to Seven Lakes and one to Bay City. That put us in the
silver bracket for Saturday’s play. On Saturday we started against Dulles and at the end of
regulation it was tied. Then we entered the tie breaker rules and each team started the inning
with a runner at 2nd. Dulles loaded the bases but Brynna Lucas did a great job of pitching out of
a jam and Dulles did not score. In the bottom half of the inning we loaded the bases and won the
game when Heather Hummel walked and pushed across the winning run.
In the 2nd game we faced Terry and the bats game alive. We had extra base hits from Kathryn
West and Sara Moreman, as well as numerous singles from Shannon Fenton, Lauren Tinkler,
Sarah Kitterman and Lacie Stevens. Lacie did an excellent job of keeping the Terry hitters off
balance and the win put us in the championship game of the silver bracket against Lamar
Consolidated.
Against Lamar, Brynna and Lacie did a great job of keeping us in the game and we won it 5-4. In
the 1st inning we picked up 2 runs. They jumped ahead in the 4th on a 3 run home run. Heather
Hummel answered in the bottom half of the inning with a solo shot to left. Kathryn West followed
with a double and came home on Sarah Kitterman’s single. Lauren Tinkler drove Sarah home
with a double up the middle. We held on in the top of the 5th to secure the victory.

March 1st update:
February 27th
Stratford 6  Spring Woods 4
We played district rival Spring Woods in the consolation game.  Victoria Bravo shut down Woods
1-2-3 in the top half of the 1st. We got the scoring started in the bottom of the inning with a
Heather Hummel bunt single, Lela Crump walk, Sarah Kitterman single, Victoria Bravo hit by
pitch and Lacie Stevens single to manufacture 2 runs.  In the 3rd inning Spring Woods tied the
game with 2 runs on 2 hits.  In the bottom of the 3rd Sarah Kitterman doubled and Kathryn West
moved her to 3rd on a sacrifice fly to center but we left her stranded at 3rd.  In the 4th inning
Lauren Tinkler doubled to right but we left her stranded at 2nd.  In the 5th inning Lela Crump,
Sarah Kitterman and Victoria Bravo singled to produce 2 runs.  Kathryn West’s sacrifice bunt
moved Victoria to 3rd.  Lacie Stevens singled to bring home Victoria and Lauren Tinkler tripled to
right to push Lacie home.

February 27th
Foster 4  Stratford 0
We met Foster at the start of the winners bracket on Saturday at our home field.  We played good
defense but couldn’t get anything started on offense.  The 1st inning was scoreless for both
teams but Foster put up 3 on a walk followed by 3 singles in the 2nd.  Neither team scored in the
3rd or 4th innings.  Foster picked up 1 more in the 5th.  Lela Crump pitched a good game but
when we had base runners we left them stranded.

February 26th
Stratford 10   Mayde Creek 1
Lela Crump shut down the Rams allowing 1 run on 3 hits over 3 innings.  She struck out 3 with
no walks.  Stratford took advantage of timely hits, alert base running, good defense and Mayde
Creek errors to build a quick lead.  Several batters collected hits and we put the game away in
the bottom of the 3rd inning and the game was called at the conclusion of the inning.

February 26th
Stratford 12   Chavez 3
The Lady Spartans jumped on the Chavez Lobos quickly behind the strong pitching of Victoria
Bravo and inconsistent pitching from the Lobos.  Victoria pitched 2 innings allowing 2 hits and 1
run followed by Lacie Stevens for 1 inning with 2 hits and 2 runs.  Lela Crump collected 2 hits
and Sarah Moreman 1.  Chavez walked 7 batters and 3 runners reached as a result of being hit
by a pitch.  We pushed 12 runs across in 3 innings with the game being called after the 3rd
inning.

February 26th
Stratford 11  Nimitz 0
The first inning was quiet with neither team scoring.  Victoria Bravo stuck out the side in the top of
the 2nd and we put up 7 runs in the bottom of the 2nd.  Victoria walked, Kathryn West doubled
driving her in, Sara Moreman doubled scoring Kathryn. Heather Hummel walked, Shannon
Fenton singled driving in Sara and Heather.  Lela Crump reached on a fielder’s choice then
Sarah Kitterman doubled diving in 2 and Victoria Bravo singled driving in 1.  We scored 1 in the
3rd when Lacie Stevens came home on Sara Moreman’s sacrifice fly.  Heather drilled one to the
wall for a double but was stranded at 3rd.  In the 4th Lela Crump walked, Victoria Bravo reached
on a bunt, Kathryn West singled, Ellie Tendall singled driving in Lela.  Alyssa Sturgis walked
scoring Victoria and Kathryn scored on Sara Moreman’s fielder’s choice.  Victoria Bravo had 10
strikeouts and allowed 2 base runners.

February 22nd update:
VARSITY vs. KLEIN-2-19-10
The girls wanted to build on their success from Tuesday night but ran into a Klein team that was
ready to play.  Klein jumped out to an early lead collecting 2 runs on 3 hits including a solo home
run in the top half of the 1st inning.  Klein pushed another run across in the top of the 2nd.
Stratford answered in the bottom half of the frame when Victoria Bravo beat out a bunt then stole
second base. Lela Crump singled up the middle and Victoria was able to score from second.
Klein led off the top of the 3rd with a double.  A sacrifice bunt pushed the runner to third and she
scored on a subsequent sacrifice fly to right. Shannon Fenton singled in the bottom of the third
but was stranded when we weren't able to push her around the bases.

We played good defense in the 4th after Klein had runners at 1st and 3rd with one out.  The
runner at first tried to steal second but a quick throw from Sarah Kitterman and tag by Kathryn
West nailed the runner at second and prevented the runner at 3rd from advancing. We held Klein
scoreless in the 4th.  In the bottom half of the 4th Victoria Bravo singled, Lela Crump reached on
an error, Lacie Stevens walked, and with the bases loaded, Heather Hummel singled to bring
Victoria home.

After 4 innings we were trailing 2-3 but felt good about our chances, however, in the 5th they
picked up 2 more runs as well as 1 in the 6th and 3 in the 7th on a bases loaded double.  We
weren't able to collect any more runs after the 4th inning.  Victoria Bravo pitched the entire game
in her first start as a Spartan.  The final score was Klein 9 and Stratford 2.

VARSITY vs. WALLER- 2-16-10
Tuesday night the Spartan softball team started their season on a good night.  Facing a future
district opponent, the Spartans were able to start the season with a 4 to 2 victory over the Waller
Bulldogs.  Lela Crump pitched the complete game victory.  In the victory, Lela struck out 11
batters, giving up one earned run and going 1-3 at the plate.

Offensively, the Spartans were led by Heather Hummel, who was 2-3 with a double and 3 runs
scored.  Victoria Bravo was also 2-3 and Lauren Tinkler also collected a hit.  Collecting RBI's for
the Spartans were Shannon Fenton 1, Alyssa Sturgis 1, and Sarah Kitterman  2.  Ellie Tendall
also had a walk and put the ball into play exceptionally well.

Defensively, the Spartans played well. Lacie Stevens and Sarah Kitterman teamed up to throw
out 2 bulldog runners.  Lauren Tinkler had 4 putouts, Alyssa Sturgis had 3 put outs and 1 assist,
and Heather Hummel had 3 assists.

Sara Moreman and Brynna Lucas also contributed to the team victory.  The Spartans next take on
Klein at the Front Yard at 5:30 on Friday, Feb. 19th.

The game summary - the Spartans scored a run in the 1st inning, 2 runs in the 4th inning, and 1
in the 6th inning. Waller scored 1 in the 2nd and 1 in the 5th.
