Round 1 of Playoffs vs. Bellaire

Last Weekend the Spartans Varsity Baseball team won a fantastic 3 Game series in the first round of playoffs against the #1 seed Bellaire.  Game 1 (on Friday night) was a pitcher’s duel with Stratford coming out on top 2-1 in front of a packed crowd at the Backyard.  Mark Perkins pitched his best game to date (getting the win) pitching 5.2 IP, 3H, 1R, 1BB, 10Ks.  Paxton Terveen came in for some fantastic relief work pitching 1.1 IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 3K.  In the bottom of the 4th Perkins was hit by a pitch and then Luke Rives was walked.  Luis Camargo stepped up and hit a hard ground ball to center scoring 2 Runs which would ultimately be the deciding runs.  William Kight and Keegan Lynn got the only other 2 hits we had that night.

Game 2 and 3 were played on Saturday as a Double Header at Butler Stadium in Bellaire.  Game 2 resulted in a disappointing 7-8 loss.  Leo Maass started on the mound pitching 1 inning.  Terveen came in and pitched 4 IP, 6H, 4R, 0BB, 2K.  Thomas Cloud, Josh Brand, Luke Broussard and Keegan Lynn all did some relief work but ultimately, we couldn’t close the game out and Bellaire came out with the win forcing a deciding game 3.

Game 3 the boys ended on top 9-2!  Pierce Cohen started on the mound, also having his best game to date, (getting the win) pitching 5 IP, 3H, 2R, 3BB, 2K.  Cloud came in to do relief work pitching 2IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 0K.  With the score 1-1 In the top of the 5th Everett Bates singled followed by a double by Cameron Donley.  Cade Alpard hit a clutch single to right field scoring both Keaton Klasing (courtesy runner for Bates) and Harris Ranger (courtesy runner for Donley) to start the 5 run inning which the boys never looked back from.  Rives, Perkins, and Camargo all had hits in that inning.  Perkins went 3-4, Camargo went 2-4, Donley went 2-4 with 2 doubles.  And let’s not forget Ford Lancaster’s diving catch to end the game!!!  It was a long day of baseball but we ended victorious and get to move on to round 2 against Katy Tompkins.

Round 2 of Playoffs vs. Katy Tompkins

Game 1 was played on Wednesday night at Katy Tompkins.  It did not go as we had hoped with us losing but the boys did not give up!  They came back on Thursday night at the Backyard fired up and ready to take the series to Game 3!  What a game 2 it was!  It was another pitcher’s duel with our pitchers coming out with the 2-1 victory.  Mark Perkins started on the mound pitching another phenomenal game with 5 IP, 5H, 1 R, 1BB, 8K.  Paxton Terveen came in as relief (getting the win) with 2IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 1K.  Cade Alpard got things started offensively with his base hit quickly to be followed by Cameron Donley’s RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.  In the top of the 6th Tompkins tied it up.  In the Bottom of the 7th Mark Perkins walked putting the winning run on first.  The pitcher then overthrew the 1st basemen allowing Harris Ranger (Courtesy Runner for Perkins) to advance to 3rd.  Keegan Lynn stepped to the plate hitting a clutch single to right field for the Walk Off RBI!!!!!

Baseball Update Week of May 3rd

Varsity Update:

Last Week against Jersey Village was a tough week with us losing both games.  We had some offensive chances with Luke Rives, Keegan Lynn and William Kight all going 2 -3, Mark Perkins and Paxton Terveen combining for 3 RBIs plus Kight and Cade Alpard both with a Stolen Base.  Unfortunately, we couldn’t put this all together and come out with the win.

Tuesday night was Senior Night.  They did not take for granted their last district home game.  They all played with energy and enthusiasm coming up with a 13 -2 win over Northbrook.  Josh Brand started on the mound while Luke Broussard, Mark Thiele, and Keegan Lynn put in work in relief.  After their pitcher hit several of our batters at the beginning of the 1st inning, combined with a few of our singles, Mark Perkins and William Kight each found the gaps to help us score some runs.  Keaton Klasing used his speed to score one of those runs. Adrian Storey got 1 of his 3 RBIs in this inning to help us take the lead 11-0 at the bottom of the 1st.  Ford Lancaster got a hit in the 2nd to help us take a 12-0 lead.  Cade Alpard and Ryan Daly had some great defensive plays that helped keep Northbrook from scoring some runs.  Tab Tracy and Wes Sage are battling some injuries, but they got their time to shine with Tracy running the bases, scoring in the 3rd and Sage doing his thing at 3rd base making sure no runs scored. So hard to believe that these 13 kids are about to graduate.  They are such a great group of young men and they will be missed very much!  Thank you to Blake Dudley for 3 years of dedication to the baseball team by being a great manager!

JV Update:
The Stratford Spartans JV team traveled to Jersey Village on Wednesday 4/21 and swept a double-header from the Falcons 8-0 and 5-4.  In the opener Tucker Copeland was credited with the Complete Game Shut Out. He scattered 8 hits over 7 innings while collecting 3 strikeouts.  In addition, he shined at the plate going 3-4. The Spartans went into the 6th inning up only 1-0 when we poured it on.  In addition to Copeland’s day at the plate John White, Braxton Wakefield, Maddox Garnero and Carter Looney joined the hitting attack.  Defense was solid throughout the game preserving the shutout with a double play after the first two Falcons reached in the 7th inning.

In the second game Leo Maass and Pierce Cohen combined for 5 innings on the mound only allowing 4 runs on 4 hits and striking out 7 batters.  A key contributor on offense were Garnero going 2-3 with a double and a triple.  Brecken Menuet, Luke Barre, Looney and Maass also collected hits that proved to be enough to complete the double-header sweep.

The Spartans JV looked to close out their season and improve on their 15 wins against the Northbrook Raiders in their home finale on April 28, 2021.  Details from the game coming next week.

Sophomore Update:

These two games were probably the best two games we have played overall as a team. Every aspect of the game (pitching, hitting, defense), all of it was put on high display last Wednesday. Offensively, Cooper Harrison led the group once again racking up 3 hits and 3 RBIs. James Broussard also had 3 hits, one of them being a perfect drag bunt single. Henry Braniff got 2 hits and 4 BBs in his 6 plate appearances. Tim Winter, Jake Hearne, Jacob Katterhenry, Carson Craft, Caleb Medlock, Luke Covington, and Adam Gilbert all got 1 hit. Christian Ramirez started the first game. He had a few walks but still never gave up a hit or a run. In relief was Matthew McDuffie. This was the best Matthew has looked all season! He threw 17 pitches in the first game, 13 of which were strikes. We couldn’t put out the fire, so we let him continue and start the 2nd game. He went 3IP with 1 H, 2 BB, and 2 Ks. Kyle Miller came in for 1 inning and struck out the side. Then Walker Sage came in and closed out the final inning with 2Ks. Overall, this is the best we’ve looked all season and we can’t wait to finish strong against a good opponent this week in Cy-Ranch.
