2010 Pearland Varsity Volleyball Tournament
August 26-28

76 High School Varsity Teams from across the state of Texas participated in the 2010 Pearland Varsity Volleyball tournament, August 26th - 28th.  The Stratford Spartans began their play against the Bellaire Cardinals and won the first game easily, 25 - 17.  They had a dramatic come from behind win in the 2nd game to earn a 25 - 23 victory, that gave them the match.  The next four games against the Klein Collins Tigers, Lovejoy Leopards (Dallas), Dripping Springs Tigers (Austin), and St. Agnes Tigers (Houston) were hard fought, but each resulted in a loss.  Coach Palermo tried out a variety of lineup combinations and strategies as she worked her magic to help the team finish on a positive note.  It proved worthwhile on Saturday, as the Spartans finished tournament play against the Rangers of Sterling High School (Baytown) with a win in 2 games, 25 - 12, 25 - 19.

This game proved to be a great opportunity for every girl on the team to make a contribution. Senior DS, Kim Djuvik, led the way as she passed the ball well to the setters, made some great digs to put the ball up and even served an ace.  Also playing well from the back where Lindsay Fowler and Emily Josey. The defense played well as Olivia Mohle and Haley Harris each put down 3 blocks and Susan Burrows and Emily Luck each had 1.  Frances Dannenbrink led the way with 11 assists, with Rebecca Grace having 7, McKenzie Martin 2, and Krissy Denby 1.  Olivia Mohle led the team with 5 Kills, followed by Emily Luck with 4, McKenzie Martin 3, Hayley Stevens 2, and Audrey Luecken and Brooke Wiggins each with 1.  Great Team effort, Way to go Spartans!

The Spartans next match will be against the Memorial Mustangs at Memorial on Tuesday, August 31st, at 6:30. Come early to get a good seat and cheer on the sub varsity teams.  Fresh A plays at 4:30, JV 5:00, Fresh B 5:30, and VARSITY 6:30.  Wear green, or your "Play for the Cure" t-shirt as this game will be accompanied by a presentation about our support for the Cure of Breast Cancer.  Hope to see you there.  Go Lady Spartans!!

VARSITY
Stratford Spartans vs Katy Tigers
August 24

The Lady Spartans Varsity Volleyball team traveled to Katy to play the Lady Tigers on Tuesday, August 24th and dropped their 2nd match in 4 tough games: 22 - 25, 14 - 25, 25 - 21, 16 - 25.
Senior, Rebecca Grace, continued to show why she was chosen for the SBISD All Tournament team as she collected 20 assists for the match.  Frances Dannenbrink had 12 assists, and Susan Burrows 1.   Susan Burrows, lead the team with 9 kills followed by Haley Harris with 8, McKenzie Martin 7, Olivia Mohle 5, Brooke Wiggins 4, and Audrey Luecken 1. The defense suffered at the net as the Tigers only hit into 7 blocks for the match; Haley Harris led with 3 and Olivia Mohle had 2, while Susan Burrows and Audrey Luecken each had 1.
Ace serves by Olivia Mohle (2) and Emily Luck (1) and back row digs by Emily Josey (2) and Emily Luck (1) provided upbeat moments during the match, but the Tigers proved to be tough opponents allowing the Spartans to come home with only 1 win in the 4 game match.
The Spartans, along with 75 other teams from across the state of Texas, will play in the Pearland Varsity Volleyball Tournament this Thursday, Friday and Saturday (August 26 - 28).  Their first match on Thursday, August 26th will be against the Bellaire Cardinals @ 3:45.

Stratford 30 Memorial 0
The 2010 Junior Varsity season kicked off at 6:42 P.M. on August 26th with the Spartans taking on the Memorial Mustangs at Tully Stadium. The Spartans defense began the season with a strong showing, forcing Memorial to a three and out series, with two incomplete passes and a 4 yard run stopped by Ryan Smith. The offense began its 2010 campaign from its own 31 yard line, and after a penalty on 1st down Jordan Gugenheim broke a 38 yard run. Stratford's first drive of the year culminated in a 7 yard touchdown run by Brain Skulski. On the following Memorial possession, the Mustangs were prevented from converting a 1st down, and on 4th and 2 Cullen Smith intercepted a pass and returned it to the 34 yard line. The second drive of the year ended in much the same way, with a 1 yard touchdown run by Travis Hanes to give the Spartans a 12-0 lead with 59 seconds left in the first quarter. As the first quarter came to a close the Spartans held a 12-0 lead with 103 yards of offense and held Memorial to no first downs.

Memorial opened the second quarter with its first 1st down of the night and continued to drive down to the Stratford 1 yard line when Matt Lien came up with a big play, sacking the MHS quarterback at the 12 yard line. After the sack the Stratford defense held on two consecutive pass plays to deny Memorial their first points of the night. The offense took over where the defense stopped the Mustangs and began their drive from their own 12 yard line. The Spartan offense suffered its first three and out of the night, punting the ball to the 50 yard line. With the first half drawing to a close, the defense once again took the field and held the struggling Mustang offense to another three and out series, ending in a punt that pinned the Spartans on their own 7 yard line with just under three minutes left in the half. The Spartan offense sputtered, again forced to another three and out, and punting the ball 9 yards to the 24 yard line. The defense came up strong once again, tipping the MHS pass on 1st and 10, then a 8 yard sack by Jake Soltis put Memorial in a 3rd and 18 from the 32. Third down resulted in an incomplete pass, and as Memorial prepared to go for it on 4th and 23 a delay of game put them back to the 37. On 4th and 23, with under a minute the Mustangs tried to convert the 4th down, but were stopped short by a big play from Jeffrey Bourdon. While the clock ticked down to the end of the half, the Spartan offense took the field for a final drive which began with a 32 yard rush by Jordan Gugenheim. The next play the Spartans took a page from their trick play book and ran a double reverse pass by Travis Haynes to Andrew Brillon for a 68 yard touchdown pass with two seconds left on the clock, giving Stratford an 18-0 lead at half time.

The second half kickoff went to the Spartans, with Isiah Glover returning the kick to the 32 yard line. The Spartan offense marched down the field on its first possession of the half, with the running backs Brian Skulski  and Jordan Gugenheim  moving the offense down the field for another touchdown, giving Stratford a 24-0 lead.  Memorial began its next drive on their 28 yard line, and after a single first down made it look like Memorial may begin to move the ball down field, a sack by Kimo Jones  put Memorial in a 3rd and 18, and after a 5 yard run that was stopped by Ankinzon Vargas,  Memorial punted again. Stratford started its next drive from the MHS 40 yard line, and on 1st down Brian Skulski broke a big run for Stratford's final touchdown of the night to give the Spartans a 30-0 lead with two and a half minutes left in the 3rd. The next Memorial drive went 65 yards and stopped on a incomplete pass at the Stratford 20 yard line. Stratford's next drive was a quick three and on 4th down the Spartans fumbled the snap and gave the Mustangs the ball on the 10 yard line. The defense held  Memorial  on their final drive of the night, with big plays from Jake Coltis, sacking the quarterback, and from  Cullen Smith stopping the Mustangs at the 2 yard line. With the game clock slowly ticking down the Spartan offense took over on the  yard line. The offense converted a first down after 2 plays, and sealed the impressive victory.

The Spartans put together a very complete game and began their 2010 season with an impressive victory over the rival Mustangs

Sophomore
August 26

Stratford 9 Memorial 6
The Sophomore Stratford Spartans started off the season with a big victory against rival Memorial. The game was a defensive battle, with the Spartans having the edge. The Spartans scored a touchdown, extra point, and a safety. A great start to a promising new season for the Sophomore Spartans.

Freshman White

August 26

Stratford 42 Memorial 8
The Freshman White squad opened the season with a decisive victory over an overmatched Memorial team by scoring 34 unanswered points in the second half of the contest.  Two defensive touchdowns and a special teams score were keys to the second half rout.
The Spartans opened the season on defense and quickly allowed a Mustang scoring drive. Fortunately, this would be the only time the red team would find the end zone. Stratford quickly responded on their first offensive possession; capping a five play, 58 yard scoring drive with a nine yard run off right tackle by Quentin Andreu. Another Andreu carry for the extra point and the Spartans led 8-6.

On the next Memorial drive the Spartans adjusted defensively and stopped the Mustangs to quickly give the ball back to the offense. This became a common theme as Chris Forbs and company controlled the line scrimmage throughout the remainder of the contest.
A strong punt return set the Spartans up in great field position, but a series of penalties stalled the drive and forced the Spartans to punt. A bad snap and subsequent tackle gave the Mustangs the ball on the Spartan 15, however the defense stiffen and on 3rd down Brice Stevenson intercepted a pass to give the offense the ball back on the 2 yard line. On the next play Andreu was tackled in the end zone for a safety and now the game was tied 8-8.
The rest of the half featured the defense dominating the Mustang offense while the Spartan offense threatened but never scored.

Stratford scored on the first play from scrimmage in second half when Stevenson took the handoff and ran 57 yards for a TD, highlighting a team high 115 yard rushing performance. Andreu once again rushed for the extra point and added another 71 yards rushing in the game to provide a balance ground attack. The right side of the offensive line was particularly strong providing large holes for the backs. The Spartans now lead 24-8.

After an interception by David Taylor that ended the only serious Mustang scoring threat, The Spartans marched down the field blending the run and pass perfectly; the drive culminating in a three yard touchdown run by quarterback, Freddy Price. On the drive Price was 3-3 passing, connecting with Brendon Bessiere on two of those completions.

The defense and special teams took over the scoring load for the remainder of the game. La'Clinton May lead the team in tackles from his safety position and also broke up several pass attempts. David Taylor ended the only serious Mustang second half scoring threat with an interception. Mark Spangenberg intercepted two passes on the night, returning the second for the last Spartan score of the evening as time expired. The special teams unit also was involved in the scoring when Stevenson returned a punt 55 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

Freshman Green
August 26

Stratford 6 Memorial 36
The Freshman Green team suffered a disappointing loss to the Mustangs as the offense failed to get on track and the defense struggled to make key stops that would have got them off of the field. A close game late in the first half quickly turned ugly with the Mustangs consistently converting third downs into first downs.

Memorial scored quickly on their opening possession to take an early seven point lead. After converting a couple of first downs, the Spartan drive bogged down and we were forced to punt. The Memorial running back fumbled on the very next play and Christian Osso recovered the ball deep in Mustang territory. A 15 yard run around right end by Ashton Bowie put the Spartans in position to tie the game; but a sack, dropped pass, and penalty ended the drive, the first quarter and our scoring chance.

The Mustang offense again marched down the field and scored another touchdown, and Stratford was suddenly down two scores. The Spartans responded, after Tripp Thorne recovered an onside quick, with a scoring drive of their own; highlighted by a strong 15 yard run for a touchdown by Bowie.  Javon Cole connected on a key 15 yard pass to Gary Casatelli on the drive that resulted in a big first down. After the missed extra point the Spartans had cut into the early deficit.

Now the Spartans had a little momentum and with not much time in the half, Stratford seemed poised for a second half comeback. A Memorial touchdown right before the half seemed to deflate the young Spartan squad. At halftime Stratford was now in a 22-6 hole.

There were not many highlights in the second half as the Mustangs seemed to make the big plays when needed while the good guys could never find a consistent rhythm. Two unanswered touchdowns finished the scoring, leaving the Spartans with much to work on before next week. Fortunately, this group is loaded with talent and this game should serve as motivation for the rest of the season.
