Stratford Spartans vs Clear Creek Wildcats
The Lady Spartans Varsity Volleyball team hosted the Clear Creek Wildcats on Tuesday, August 17th and dropped the match in 3 hard fought games: 21 - 25, 26 - 28, 20 - 25.
Olivia Mohle, lead the team with 4 blocks followed by Susan Burrows and Haley Harris each with 3, Brooke Wiggins, 2 and Emily Luck,1. On the front line, Rebecca Grace and Frances Dannenbrink combined for 10 assists with kills from Olivia Mohle (3), Haley Harris (3), Susan Burrows ( 2 ), and McKenzie Martin and Emily Luck 1 time each.
Ace serves by Rebecca Grace and Olivia Mohle swinging momentum in the Spartans direction, and back row digs by Emily Josey and Frances Dannenbrink keeping volleys going, proved not to be enough to fight of the attack by the Wildcats, and the Spartans became 2 -1 for the season.
The Spartans will host the SBISD Varsity Volleyball Tournament this weekend and will play their first match on Thursday, August 19th in the competition gym against the Bush Broncos out of Sugarland.
2010 SBISD Varsity Volleyball Tournament
36 High School Varsity Teams from Houston, and surrounding areas participated in the 2010 SBISD Varsity Volleyball tournament, August 19 - 21st. The Stratford Spartans, last years champions, began play in the tournament against the Bush Broncos out of Sugarland, Texas and won easily, 25 - 10, 25 - 15. The second game of the tournament put them against the Foster Falcons out of Richmond, Texas.
Key digs by back row players, Emily Josey, McKenzie Martin, Lindsay Fowler and Kim Djuvik and great passing by Libero, Emily Josey provided the spark needed to win against a very tough Foster team. Her passing allowed setters Rebecca Grace (9) and Frances Dannenbrink (10) to combine for 19 assists, with the kills from hitters, Olivia Mohle (6), Susan Burrows (4), Emily Luck (4), Haley Harris (3), and McKenzie Martin (3). Susan Burrows led the team with 4 blocks followed by Olivia Mohle and Haley Harris each with 3 and Brooke Wiggins with 1. The final blow to put the match away came when Rebecca Grace combined with Susan Burrows to put the kill in and score the final point needed to seal up the 25 - 20, 17 - 25, 25 - 21 win.
This win set the team up to play the Clear Creek Wildcats again on Friday at Memorial High School. Once again the Wildcats baffled the Spartans as the team lost, 19 - 25, 20 - 25. The loss next put the Spartans against the Katy Taylor Mustangs. The Lady Spartans rose to the occasion to put away a very tough team, 25 - 16, 20 - 25, 25 - 16. Rebecca Grace collected an amazing 17 assists, Frances Dannenbrink had 16 assists and Emily Josey and Susan Burrows each had 1 assist. This was combined with outstanding hitting by Emily Luck (11 kills), Susan Burrows, McKenzie Martin, and Olivia Mohle (7 kills each), Haley Harris and Brooke Wiggins (3 kills each). Haley Harris led the team with 5 blocks, along with Susan Burrows (4), Olivia Mohle (2), Audrey Luecken, McKenzie Martin, and Brooke Wiggins each with 1 block. This win set the Spartans up to battle for 5th place against the Cinco Ranch Cougars.
The squad started off on a low note dropping the first game 17 - 25. The back row digs and passes by Emily Josey and Emily Luck gave the front row a chance to battle hard as the setters provided 19 assists; Rebecca Grace (10) and Francis Dannenbrink (9). Junior Haley Harris led with 6 kills, followed by McKenzie Martin and Brooke Wiggins (5 kills each), Susan Burrows and Olivia Mohle (4 kills each). Olivia Mohle put down 3 blocks followed by Haley Harris with 2, and Susan Burrows and Brooke Wiggins each with 1 block. The Spartans rallied and won the 2nd game 25 - 21, but fell short in the 3rd game losing 22 - 25. This put the Spartans in 6th place overall out of 36 teams. Congratulations Lady Spartans!
Congratulations go to Senior Rebecca Grace for being named to the SBISD All-Tournament Volleyball Team at the closing ceremonies on Saturday. Way to go Rebecca.
The Spartans will travel out to Katy on Tuesday, August 24th, to take on the SBISD Tournament 2nd place winner, Katy Tigers. Come on out at 5:30 and Cheer the Spartans on!
