JV Girls Basketball Update
January 10, 2012 - January 20, 2012
Record 12-7 Overall, 7-2 District

Stratford vs. Waller, 1/10/2012, Win 47-33

After starting the game with a tight 12-12 first quarter, the team pulled away and were victorious against Waller at home. The Spartans were led with Kim Taylor having 15 points, Ashley Sherrard with 10, and Alex Pierce and Erin Hanshaw both with 8. Although the team still had too many turnovers, their aggressive defense led by Shelby and Ashley proved too much for Waller. Kim also had 10 rebounds to go along with her points for a nice double double.

Stratford vs. Brenham, 1/13/2012, Loss 28-31

On Friday the team played Brenham at their gym and, after leading 21-16 after three quarters, fell shy at the end to lose by 3.  Penalties plagued the Spartans in the 4th quarter that eventually led to 3 Spartans starters fouling out.  This was the most exciting game of the season as their home crowd was quite boisterous and that really made the difference. The Brenham team is quite athletic and began pressing at the end which was one of the big reasons we could not put this game away.  This will be a great rematch for our last game of the season at home. Individual honors go to Shelby Thomas with 8 points and 8 steals as she played her best game of the season as well as Kristina Viterova who had 8 rebounds and picked up the slack after Kim and Alex fouled out.

Stratford vs. Montgomery, 1/17/2012, Win 27-26

The girls finally won a close game against Montgomery at their gym avenging our previous home game loss. This was a very low scoring game and it looked like Montgomery was going to come back and win again at the end with a barrage of free throws. We were outscored 10 to 5 in the last quarter but managed to hold on to the win. Ashley Sherrard had one of her best offensive performances leading the team with 10 points. Kim Taylor and Alex Pierce added 6 points each to go along with 8 rebounds each. Although our team was very active we still had numerous turnovers which allowed Montgomery to get back into the game.

Stratford vs. Northbrook, 1/20/2012, Win 43-17

The Lady Spartans won handily over Northbrook in the Coliseum on Friday afternoon. All players had a hand in the win with everyone making a contribution.  Northbrook's best player is their post but our post players did well against her. Katie Dickinson (6 points), Kristina Viterova (3 rebounds) and Emily Wissel (3 rebounds) were each effective in the middle. Anna Bergersen was very active with some steals and a great assist as was Desirae Bunch who added a couple of steals. Sara Cortaguera added 4 points and another great assist. The team was led in scoring by Erin Hanshaw with 10 points which included 4 outside shots. Ashley Sherrard and Alex Pierce chipped in with 6 points each.

Next up is Magnolia away on Tuesday.

JV Girls Basketball Update
January 6, 2012
Stratford 35, Magnolia West 22

The Spartans travelled to Magnolia West High school to face a tough team and a loud partisan crowd.   The girls kept their cool and delivered a win.   Magnolia tried to press, but the press break was working for Stratford and resulted in some easy baskets.   Overall, though, it was a sloppy game with turnovers and fouls on both sides.   Shelby Thomas turned in a great defensive game with 8 steals and Kim Taylor continued to score inside.  Solid defense, steals and rebounds helped Stratford hold off a late run by the Mustangs.  Kim Taylor led all scorers with 10 points, followed by Ashley Sherrard with 7, Erin Hanshaw with 5, Alex Pierce with 4.   Shelby Thomas led in steals with 8 with Ashley and Erin contributing 7 each.  Alex Pierce led in rebounds with 9 followed by Shelby and Ashley with 5 each.

Stratford 45, Spring Woods 22

Stratford outmatched Spring Woods across the board and played together as a team to start the New Year.  Kim Taylor and Erin Hanshaw had an outstanding game.  Kim scored 13 points and pulled down 6 rebounds, while Erin delivered on both ends of the floor, pouring in 12 points and grabbing 9 steals.     Solid defense and fast breaks helped the Spartans win this one going away.  Lacie Stevens had 8 points and 4 rebounds, Shelby Thomas 5 rebounds as well with contributions from the entire team.

Stratford 32, Katy 9

In the last contest of the year with the game starting at 9:00 am, the girls got off to a slow start against a struggling Katy team.   The tough defense produced steals for the Spartans with Shelby leading the way with 5 steals followed by Erin with 4 and Ashley with 3.  Ashley’s drives to the basket help create momentum and Stratford won this year ending contest.  Ashley led all scorers with 10 followed by Kim with 8, Shelby and Anna with 4 each.  Alex Pierce pulled down 6 rebounds followed by Kim with 5.

JV Girls Basketball Update
December 13, 2011
Record 6-5 Overall, 2-1 District

The girls started district play with a heartbreaker against Montgomery at home losing 34-38. The team was leading for the majority of the game but lost at the very end when Montgomery was able to convert several free throw opportunities. Stratford did not have an answer for Montgomery’s point guard who scored the majority of their team’s points. This was a well balanced scoring effort by the Spartans as Katie and Lacie led our team with 7 points each and 5 girls had 4 points (Shelby, Ashley, Kim, Alex, and Erin). Lacie and Erin had 5 steals each and Alex led the team with 10 rebounds.

On Friday the team played Northbrook at the Coliseum and won handily 42-15. Northbrook was outmanned for this game as the Spartans had a definite height advantage. All of the girls saw playing time and everyone contributed. Anna Bergersen made back to back outside jumpers from the wing and Emily Wissel got her first bucket of the season. Once again the scoring was balanced with Erin 8, Ashley, Lacie, and Katie with 6, Anna, Kim, and Alex with 4, and Shelby and Emily with 2 each. Shelby led the team with steals and Christina had the highest rebound total.

On Monday the Spartans had another home game against Magnolia and came out on top 29-27. This was the most exciting game of the year as Magnolia has several quality players and a very solid defense. The girls were able to come back from a 4 point deficit in the fourth quarter and steal the win. All the girls played well but there were four outstanding performances. Ashley set the tone for the team by being very aggressive on both sides of the court ending up with 5 points and leading the team in steals. Lacie added four points and played an overall solid game with 3 steals, 7rebounds and 4 assists. Kim Taylor continued being our leading scorer as she had 12 points to go along with 5 rebounds. Last but not least was Alex who made some pivotal plays at the end of the game to give our team a chance to win. After grabbing some key rebounds and a steal she made two clutch free throws in the fourth quarter to close out the victory. Alex also totaled 6 points and 6 rebounds.

Next up will be a tough away game against Langham Creek on Friday.

JV Girls Basketball Update
November 29, 2011 - December 3, 2011

On November 29 Stratford traveled to Pasadena Memorial to take on the Mavericks.   The Spartans kept the game close through the first half, but the Maverick press gave them trouble and this one slipped away with the final score being Mavericks 30, Stratford 17.  Lacie Stevens led the scoring with 8 points followed by Erin Hanshaw with 6 and Katie Dickinson with 3.  Alex Pierce led the rebounds with 5 followed by Katie Dickinson with 4 and Lacie Stevens with 3.  Erin Hanshaw had the most steals with 5.

December 2-3 Stratford participated in the 2011 Spring Branch ISD Basketball Tournament and came in third.  The other teams in the tourney included Hastings, Spring Woods, Hightower, Northbrook, Dulles, Memorial and Houston Christian.

On Friday night the Spartans beat a very athletic Hastings team, 42-20.  The Spartans came out with a high level of intensity early on defense which resulted in a series of steals and fast breaks with Lacie Stevens pouring in 10 points in the first half.   The girls kept it going in the second half and ran away with this one.    Lacie led scoring with 13 points, followed by Katie Dickinson with 6, Ashley Sherrard with 5, Erin Hanshaw with 4, Kim Taylor with 3 and Alex Pierce and Kristina Viterova with 2 each.  Steals played a key role in this win.  Lacie had 5, Shelby Thomas had 4 and Erin had 3.  The leading rebounders were Shelby with 6, Lacie with 5, Ashley with 5 and Alex with 3.  With this win the Spartans advanced in the winners bracket.

On Saturday morning the Spartans faced a fired up Hightower team.   Hightower came out on top in this one: Hightower 56, Spartans 34.   The Spartans came out focused and played the game close through the first quarter, but the Hightower half court press and zone defense proved difficult to penetrate.   The story in this lose was Spartan turnovers.   The silver lining in this cloudy game was that Kim Taylor came alive scoring 16 points and pulling down 8 rebounds.   The rest of the scoring was Erin 5, Alex 4, Shelby 3 and Ashley, Katie and Lacie with 2 each.  The rest of the rebounding Alex 6, Erin 5, Shelby 4, Lacie 3.  Hightower went on to the finals and the Spartans moved to Third Place Championship game.

On Saturday afternoon the Spartans faced Dulles for the Third Place Championship.  Stratford won going away 33-19.   After a rough start in the morning game the Spartans came to play at high noon.   Dulles tried to employ a half court trap, but the Spartans press break was effective in leading to several breakaway layups.   The Spartans built a 20-6 half time lead and never looked back.   The leading scorers were Lacie Stevens with 10 and Kim Taylor with 6.  Shelby Thomas led the way on defense with 6 steals followed by Erin Hanshaw with 5.  Kim Taylor pulled down 8 rebounds followed by Alex Pierce with 4.

JV Girls Basketball Update
November 23, 2011
Record 2-2

The girls J.V. team defeated Memorial last night at Coleman Coliseum 27-22. The team was led in scoring by Kim Taylor with 8 points and Erin Hanshaw with 6. Stratford went out to a comfortable lead at the start of the game but Memorial came back to almost tie the score at the half. In the second half both teams played conservatively with Memorial seemingly gaining the momentum late in the game. Shelby Thomas then came up with a great steal and completed a layup in traffic with her off hand to put Stratford up for good.

In prior games the team had an easy win over Kempner, a resounding defeat from Pearland, and a heartbreaker against Katy Taylor. The team beat Kempner at home and the game was never in question as all members of the team contributed. The Pearland game was a different story as the team lost 36-14 after being down 27-1 at the half. Our girls did regroup in the second half by outscoring Pearland 13 to 9 but the first half deficit was too much to overcome. In the game against Katy Taylor our girls began the game with an early lead only to have Katy come back and take a small lead at half time. The second half score went back and forth until Katy, a very athletic team, caused us to get into foul problems which allowed them to win the game basically from the foul line.

Coming up is an away game at Pasadena Memorial on Tuesday and the SBISD JV tournament on Friday and Saturday.
