Summer 2009: 7 on 7
Stratford represents Houston well at State 7 on 7 Tournament
by winning Consolation Bracket Championship !!!

On July 10-11th the Stratford 7on 7 team traveled to College Station for the 2009 State
Championship in College Station - making it the 7th such trip since 2002.  What transpired in the
sweltering heat that weekend was nothing short of amazing as the Spartans captured the
Consolation Bracket Championship and solidified its reputation as an area powerhouse for 7 on 7
football.

On the tournament's first day, things went disappointingly for Stratford - losing 2 close games in
pool play which kept them out of the following day's 32-team Championship Bracket.  Bracket play
for the 32-team Consolation Bracket started at 8:00am the following morning and saw Stratford
start-out slow against its first opponent, South Garland, but the Spartans battled to a nail-biting 21 to
20 victory. Stratford followed with victories of 27 to 24 over FB Elkins and 46 to 33 over Tyler Lee.
Advancing to the bracket semi-final match with Copperas Cove, Stratford had its momentum and
confidence back and defeated the Bulldawgs by a score of 34 to 20. This victory advanced Stratford
to the Consolation Bracket Championship game which was played on Texas A&M's Kyle Field.  After
playing and winning 4 games in triple-digit heat for over 7 hours, Stratford played masterfully both
defensively and offensively against a talented Pearland team in the Bracket Championship game,
eventually prevailing by an impressive score of 52 to 27.

Impressive play on both sides of the ball was routine for the Spartan's 20-man roster throughout the
tournament which saw the boys mount several come-from-behind victories. After the tournament,
Brett Benninger was named to the State 7 on 7 All-Tournament Team.  Much thanks goes to the
team coaches Cody Schwartz and Jake Huggins (and "player motivationist"- Keith Young and Jacob
Salinas "the mule").  Also thanks to the numerous parents who helped in transporting, feeding,
watering and keeping the kids cool - not a trivial task. Special thanks to the Stratford coaching staff
and their families for all their support.
