November 12th update:
SHS 0  -  Strake 30

The following detail of action from this game would be totally irrelevant after Taylor Cash’s scary
third quarter injury.  However, Taylor has thankfully fully recovered and is OK.  Accordingly, the
following are the highlights of the game.

Landon Neumann took the opening kick-off to the 34.  After a run by Kyle Casanover, Kurt Kaiser
caught a pass for the first down.  Landon Neumann caught another pass on the next play to the
Strake Crusader 49.  The Spartans came up short on fourth down, and the Crusaders took over and
began a long drive mostly running the ball, and scored with 2:44 left in the 1st quarter.  With a good
PAT the score was 7-0.  On the ensuing kick-off, the Spartans began a drive that bogged down on
the Crusaders 46.

Stratford was forced to punt on the first play of the 2nd quarter.  The Crusaders gained  a first down
on some runs, but after an encouraging stop for a loss by Taylor Cash, on the next play Strake hit a
long pass to the Spartans 18.  They scored two plays later on another pass, and after a good PAT,
Strake was up 14-0. On the ensuing kick-off, the Spartans were set up on their 25.  However, the
drive didn’t get started because of a lost fumble. However, the Spartans held and they got the ball
back on their 19.  After a pass to Landon Neumann for a first down at the 30, Travis Hanes hit Will
Maham on a 37 yard pass to the Crusader 30.  However, a fumble ended the drive and the first half
ended 14-0.

The 2nd half began with the Crusders starting at their 40.  They began a run-oriented long drive,
including a 25 yard TD run on which Taylor Cash was injured.  After he lay on the ground for some
20 minutes or so, he was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

After that chill to all in attendance, Strake missed the extra point and the score was 20-0.

On the ensuing kick-off, the Spartans took over on their 22.  On the first play from scrimmage, Travis
Hanes hit Landon Neumann on a 33 yard pass to the Crusader 35. However, the drive faltered, and
a deflected pass was intercepted and returned to the Spartans 20.  They scored two plays later and
with the PAT, Strake led 27-0.  After the kick-off, the Spartans went three and out and punted.  The
3rd quarter ended with the Crusaders on the Spartans 47.

Strake eventually drove on the first series in the 4th quarter to the Spartans 5, but they prevented a
TD and Strake attempted a field goal which was good making the score 30-0.

November 4th update:
Stratford  6 – Elsik 30
The Green Team started, as in the previous two games, with an early score by the opposition,
putting the Spartans in an hole.  The Spartans received the opening kick-off, but a fumble occurred
on the first play and was recovered by Elsik.  On their first play, Elsik scored on a run up the middle
to all the way to the end zone for a touchdown.  The PAT was no good.  On the ensuing kick-off, the
Spartans were set-up at the 32, but a three and out was followed by a tremendous punt by Alonso
Acosta to the Elsik 6 yard line.  It looked like the Spartans would hold and get good field position,
after a sack by Christian Daimler.  However, on third down, Elsik connected on a 71 yard pass play
that would have been a touchdown except for a saving tackle by Taylor Cash at the 25 yard line.
Elsik moved to the Spartans 4, but Stratford held on a great defensive stand and took over.  After a
quick pass for a first down to Landon Neumann, the Spartans were forced to punt.  Elsik moved to
the Spartans 43, and the first quarter ended  6-0.

On the first play of the 2nd quarter, Elsik threw an interception on a great play by Graham Jones,
who returned it to the Spartans 29.  The Spartans drive started with promise with a 11 yard pass to
Landon Neumann for a first down.  After moving the ball to the 49, the ball was turned back over to
Elsik on an interception.  Elsik scored in one play from their 38 on a long pass, and the score was
12-0 after the PAT was unsuccessful.  On the kick-off, Jordan Bernstein made a tough return to the
39, the Spartans began a drive.  After a couple of good runs by Kyle Casanover to the 47, the
Spartans were 3rd down with two to go for a first down.  Travis Hanes went for a QB sneak, but
behind a dominant block with great second effort by Josh Asch in which he stayed with the block for
7-8 yards which allowed a 37 yard run to go down to the 16 yard line.  A series of runs, mainly with
Kyle Casanover, got the ball down to the 5 yard line for a first down.  A couple more runs got it to the
1 yard line, and it was 3rd and goal.  After an unsuccessful run for the score, a catastrophic
interception by Elsik was returned 99 yards.  The PAT was again unsuccessful.  The half ended 18-
0.

The 3rd quarter began with Elsik setting up after the kick-off return at their 30.  On the first play, Elsik
fumbled and it was recovered by Kurt Kaiser, but the Spartans went three and out.  After the punt,
Elsik was at their 20 yard line and started a long drive aided by penalties, one wiping out a great
sack by Xavier Mendoza.  Subsequently, Elsik moved to the Spartans 29, and from there completed
a touchdown pass and were up 24-0 after another stop by the Spartans prevented the PAT.  After the
kick-off, the Spartans started from their 34.  After a reverse by Landon Neumann, on the next play a
pass was caught that would have been good enough for a first down, but was fumbled to Elsik and
after one play.  The 3rd quarter ended 24-0.

The 4th quarter began with Elsik moving from the Spartans 37, but after a holding penalty and a
great tackle for a loss by Josh Asch, they punted.  The Spartans took over at their 16, but went three
and out and punted.  Elsik returned the ball to the Spartans 40 and then proceeded to score on the
first play and went up 30-0.  The PAT was intercepted by Kyle Casanover.  On another good kick-off
return by Jordan Bernstein, the Spartans began at their 46. Several plays later they had moved it to
the Elsik 40 on some good runs by Kyle Casanover.  On the next play they ran a reverse to the 33.
On the next play, Travis Hanes hit Alonzo Acosta with a touchdown pass, but the PAT was no good.
Elsik ran several plays after the  kick-off, and the time expired with the final score 30-6.

October 28th update:
Stratford 13   Spring Woods 15
Like last week’s game, the Green team started off quickly in the hole, as Spring Woods scored on
the first play from scrimmage, and the Spartans were behind 7-0 with 27 seconds gone in the
game.  On the ensuing kick-off, the Spartans got good field position from Darrius Arnold’s return to
the 47 yard line. However, a fumble on the second play handed the ball back to Spring Woods with
good field position.  The Spartans stiffened with two great defensive plays by Josh Asch, and got the
ball at their 25.  After two good runs by Kyle Casanover, the Spartans bogged down and were forced
to punt, and the 1st quarter ended with Spring Woods on their 44 and up 7-0.

The 2nd quarter had Spring Woods driving.  After two good runs, the Spartans held on 4th down and
they took over on their 35.  On the first play, Travis Hanes passed to Darrius Arnold for 15 yards to
the 50.  A couple of runs by Kyle Casanover put the ball at the 37.  Another pass to Darrius Arnold
moved the ball to the 26.  A roughing the passer call, followed by an off-sides call, put the ball on the
11.  An 8 yard run by Travis Hanes, followed by a Kyle Casanover run, put the ball on the one and
Travis Hanes sneaked it in behind Nick Hwang, Troy Rucker and Josh Asch blocking. The PAT was
no good and the score was 7-6 Spring Woods.  A great kick-off by Alonso Acosta went to the 1yd line
and was returned to the 15.  After moving the ball to their 30 yard line, Spring Woods fumbled and
the Spartans took over at the 29.  A face mask penalty moved the ball to the 14.  On the next play
Travis Hanes had a rumbling run around the left, aided by a Darrius Arnold “decleating” block, but
the ball was clearly miss-marked by the officials, and should have been at the 8 yard line.  A pass to
Jake Soltis moved the ball to the 7.   A tipped ball by Spring Woods, prevented a sure touchdown
and the half ended 7-6.

The 2nd half began with the Spartans beginning a drive at their 38.  Two quick bursts by Kyle
Casanover quickly put the ball on the Spring Woods 40, but Spring Woods recovered a fumble at
their 38.  They began a long, time consuming drive that led to a touchdown and took most of the 3rd
quarter.  Their PAT was a clever throwback play resembling the old “swinging gate” and was
successful.  Spring Woods was up 15-6.

Stratford ran a few plays after the kick off that ran out the 3rd quarter.

Stratford began the 4th quarter at their 20 yard line and were forced to punt after a couple of plays.
Spring Woods, however, muffed the punt and the Spartans set up at their own 40, but were three
and out punting back to Spring Woods.  They moved quickly with a first down, but then the Spartans
stiffened, thanks to a great defensive play by Jordan Bernstein.  Spring Woods punted back to the
Spartans and they began a drive from their 20.  A pass to Darrius Arnold moved the ball to the 28,
and then Kyle Casanover  ran for a first down.  Another face mask penalty on Spring Woods moved
the ball to the 45.  An ensuing sack moved the ball back to the 38.  Travis Hanes then connected on
45 yard pass play to Alonso Acosta to the Spring Woods 17 yard line.  That was followed by a pass
to Jake Soltis that put the ball on the 6 yard line.  After several attempts for a touchdown, Kyle
Casanover then scored, aided by Josh Asch pushing the whole pile into the end zone.  Alonsa
Acosta was good on his PAT and the score was 15-13..  After the ensuing kick-off, Spring Woods
ran out the clock and the final score was Spring Woods 15,  Stratford  13.

October 21st update:
Stratford  26 – Northbrook  6
The Green team game with Northbrook started ominously after their kick-off return was almost
returned for a TD, but for a TD saving tackle by Alonzo Acosta.  That  was followed by a great
defensive play by Josh Asch, resulting in a 4 yard loss.  However, on the next play, Northbrook threw
up a prayer pass that was answered, being caught between 3 Spartans for 64 yard TD.  Darrius
Arnold stopped the extra point attempt cold.

On the ensuing kick-off, Kyle Casanover had a good return, but after several runs by Devante Barr
and a quick pass to Darrius Arnold, the Spartans were forced to punt for a touchback.  After that,
Northbrook was unable to move, and after a huge sack for a loss by Jake Soltis and Cameron
Wilson, they punted and Landon Neumann returned the kick to the Northbrook 6 yard line.  In two
plays, Travis Hanes hit Jake Soltis for a touchdown pass, but the extra point was blocked, and the
game was 6-6.  After Northbrook returned the kick, Kyle Casanover intercepted a pass attempt, and
the Spartans were set up on the 34 yard line.  The first quarter ended with a tie score of 6-6.

The 2nd quarter began with the Spartans on the Northbrook 34.  After a run by Devante Barr, then a
critical fumble recovery by Landon Neumann, the Spartans were at the 21 yard line.  After a great
pass to Darrius Arnold inside the 5 yard line was wiped out by a false start, that put the ball back at
the 25.  Two good runs by Xavier Mendoza put the ball at the 20.  Travis Hanes hit Darrius Arnold
with a pass to the 5, and Darrius then bowled over Northbrook defenders in an “Andre Johnson”
type of run for the score.  The extra point was unsuccessful, and the Spartans led by a score of 12-6.

On the ensuing kick-off, Northbrook went nowhere, and after a Xavier Mendoza interception, the
Spartans were forced to punt.  Alonzo Acosta’s punt set up Northbrook at their 7 yard line.  After a run
to the 22 yard line, a fumble by Northbrook began a “keystone cops”series of fumbles and
recoveries by both teams, that  was eventually controlled by Josh Asch, and the Spartans were at the
Northbrook 5 yard line.  Devante  Barr scored on the first play, and this time the extra point was good
by Alonzo Acosta, and the score was now Spartans 19 Northbrook 6, and this is the way the half
ended.

The 3rd quarter began for the Spartans with Devante Barr returning the kick, and after he added a
couple of good runs to the Northbrook 47, Stratford had good field position.  Travis Hanes hit Jake
Soltis with a pass to the 28 yard line and then Kyle Casanover ran it to the 17.  Another pass to
Darrius Arnold set up the Spartans at the 3 yard line, and then Kyle Casavover scored on a run, and
the point after was good by Alonzo Acosta.  The score was 26-6 in favor of Stratford.  On the ensuing
kick-off, Northbrook was unable to move, although Xavier Mendoza made a touchdown saving tackle
leading to a punt, and that is how the third quarter ended, with the score being 26-6.

The Spartans continued the drive into the 4th quarter consuming time with runs by Xavier Mendoza
and Kyle Casanover.  The drive lasted some 12 plays, but bogged down at the Northbrook 11 yard
line at which the Spartans attempted a field goal which was no good, and Northbrook took over and
ran out the clock.  The offensive line of Jimmy Hodges, Joshua Asch, Nick Hwang, Troy Rucker, and
Christian Daimler should be credited with good blocking, not only on the 4th quarter drive, but for the
whole game.  Final score  Stratford  26  Northbrook 6.

October 14th update:
Stratford  0 – Hastings 16
The Spartans kicked-off to Hastings with a strong kick by Alonzo Acosta for a touchback, but
Hastings quickly moved to mid-field in a couple of plays.  The Spartans forced a punt and started a
drive on two passes to Jake Soltis from Travis Hanes, but the drive eventually bogged down on the
Hastings 27 yard line.  Hastings wasn't able to move the ball because of strong Spartan defense
led by Darrius Arnold.  After a punt back to the Spartans, the 1st quarter ended 0-0.

The 2nd quarter began by the Spartans going 3 and out.  They punted to Hastings but Darrius
Arnold and the Spartan defense held again.  On the 1st play from their 20 yard line, the Spartans
fumbled and Hastings took over on the 25.  They scored five plays later including a 2 point XP, and
they led 8-0.  The Spartans got a good kick return from Jordan Bernstein, but in spite of some strong
running from Kyle Casanover, were forced to punt again, and into a strong wind.  Despite good field
position, Hastings couldn't take advantage, punted again and the 2nd quarter ended 8-0 in favor of
Hastings.

The 2nd half was highlighted by 3 long drives, two by Stratford and one by Hastings, unfortunately
they finished theirs and the Spartans didn't.  Hastings took the kick-off and after several plays
fumbled with the Spartan's Xavier Mendoza recovering.  The Spartans began a drive with runs by
Travis Hanes and throws to Alonzo Acosta, and determined running by Kyle Casanover, but the drive
ended at the Hastings 8 yard line.  At that point, Hastings began a drive that ended the 3rd quarter
and kept going into the 4th quarter eventually ending with a touchdown.  They went for two again and
it was 16-0.

After a great kick-off return from Kyle Casanover, the Spartans were set up at the Hastings 43.  On
the first play after that, Travis Hanes hit Kurt Kaiser on a pass good for 23 yards down to the
Hastings 20 yard line.  Josh Asch continues as a stellar noseguard on defense and right guard on
offense, as well as Nick Hwang doing n excellent job at center and noseguard.  The Spartans
eventually got to the 9 yard line, but a sack, a holding call, and a bad snap pushed the Spartans
back to the 47, and that's how the game ended.  Hastings 16  Stratford 0.

October 7th update:
Stratford 0  - Memorial 35
The Green Team got taken to the wood shed by Memorial.  The Spartans took the opening kick-off,
and were three and out, punted and Memorial scored in five plays and it was 7-0. The Spartans
repeated their performance after the kick-off, ran three plays punted, and Memorial scored again
making it 14-0.  On the next series, after the kick-off, the Spartans did drive the ball some 36 yards
behind some determined running by Kyle Casanover, but ended in an unsuccessful field goal, to
end the 1st quarter, 14-0

The 2nd quarter began with another quick scoring drive by Memorial, making it 21-0.  After the kick-
off, the Spartans began another drive that lasted 6 plays based on more good running by Kyle
Casanover, but the drive bogged down, and after another good punt by Alonso Acosta, Memorial
scored quickly to end the 1st half up 28-0.

The Spartans kicked-off to  begin the 3rd quarter, and Memorial began another scoring drive slowed
down by a hustling touchdown saving tackle by Landon Newmann, but they scored in two plays and
were up 35-0.  After the kick-off, the Spartans began a long drive from their 21 yard line that went all
the way to the Memorial 5 yard line in 16 plays.  Along the way, there were some nice catches by
Jake Soltis and Jordan Bernstein, more good running by Kyle Casanover and a great pancake block
thrown by Kurt Kaiser.  After the drive bogged down, Memorial ran out the clock and the game ended
35-0.

September 30th update:
Stratford  10  Alief Taylor 18
The Spartans received the opening kick-off in the game and started from their 25 yd line and before
it was over, they had driven 75 yds in 18 plays, that consumed over 9 minutes of the 1st quarter, but
they had to settle for a field goal.  The drive consisted of a good blend of runs and passes, including
tough running by Kyle Casanover and Devante Barr, and passes caught by Jake Soltis and Will
Maham from Travis Hanes.  Eventually, the drive bogged down at the Taylor 15 and Alonso Acosta
connected on a 32 yard field goal and the Spartans were up 3-0. You can’t have an 18 play drive at
any level of football without great line play, and Christian Daimler, Troy Rucker, Nick Hwang, Josh
Asch, and Jimmy Hodges should be credited.

The 1st quarter ended 3-0 in favor of the Spartans. However, Alief Taylor quickly scored in the 2nd
quarter after two plays, on a 60 yd run, but they missed the extra point, making the score 6-3.  On the
next series, the Spartans couldn’t move the ball. On the ensuing punt into a fierce North wind, the
ball actually went backwards, and from the Spartans 18, Taylor scored in two plays, but missed the
extra point and went up 12-3.

After the kick-off, disaster struck for the Spartans when a Taylor defender got into the backfield and
disrupted a hand-off, and snatched it away and rumbled in for a touchdown, making it 18-3 after
another failed extra point.  The rest of the 2nd quarter, the teams went back and forth, with a final
Taylor threat halted by the break-up of a long pass by Jordan Bernstein and Taylor Cash, and the
half ended 18-3.

The 2nd half began with a drive by Taylor after receiving the kick-off.  A series of good defensive
plays by Cameron Wilson, Joshua Asch and Darrius Arnold forced a punt into the wind, and the
Spartans took over at their 46 yard line.  On the second play of the series, Travis Hanes hit Jordan
Bernstein on a 54 yard pass for a touchdown.  Alonso Acosta was good on the extra point kick, and
the Spartans narrowed the Alief Taylor lead to 18-10.

On the next series, Taylor drove the ball 20 yards, but had to punt into the wind and the Spartans set
up at the Taylor 49.  After a large sack, the Spartans began the 4th quarter on their 38 yard line.
Neither team could consistently move the ball for the remainder of the quarter and the game ended
18-10.

September 23rd update:
Cy Woods – 38  SHS – 7
The Spartans started the game with a nice kick-off return by Kyle Casanover of 20 yards, but then in
the 1st series they were three and out.  After the punt, Cy Woods scored in a 12 play drive, but the
PAT was no good and it was 6-0.  On the ensuing kick-off, the Spartans took possession on the 2
yard line and punted after three plays.  From the 36 yard line, Cy Woods scored in three plays, but
not before Kurt Kaiser made a great break-up of a pass.  The 2 point PAT was good, making the
score 14-0. On the following kick-off, after another good return by Kyle Casanover, the Spartans
bogged down on a short drive and after a punt, Cy Woods scored on a long run, making it 20-0 after
an unsuccessful PAT.

Finally, on the next possession, the Spartans got something going on a 42 yard touchdown pass
from Travis Hanes to Kurt Kaiser.  The PAT was good as Alonso Acosta continued his fine kicking.
Unfortunately, Cy Woods was not done scoring, and scored again before the half, and despite some
good tackling and a pass break-up by Jordan Bernstein, the 1st half ended 28-7.

In the 3rd quarter, things went from bad to worse with a bad snap from center going over the
quarterback’s head, and then the same thing occurred on the ensuing punt for a safety for Cy
Woods.  The score then stood at 30-7. On the following kick-off, Landon Newmann made a
touchdown saving tackle.  However, Cy Woods was not through scoring, and on their first series of
the 4th quarter, scored again, including a two point successful PAT and the final score was 38-7.

September 16th update:
GREEN TEAM  ------------  Stratford  7 – Spring  33
The Spartans began the 1st quarter with a couple of drives that stalled with the Spring Lions scoring
between them.  The second Spartan drive lasted some 14 plays with a blend of nice catches by
Jake Soltis and Darrius Arnold from Travis Hanes, and tough running by Devante Barr and Xavier
Mendoza behind good blocking in the line by Nick Huang, Troy Rucker, and Jimmy Hodges, but the
quarter ended Spring Lions 7  Spartans 0.

The 2nd quarter was a defensive struggle with good defensive plays by Cameron Wilson and
Jordan Bernstein for tackles for losses, and the knock-down of a long pass by Graham Baker.  After
a bad snap over the punter’s head, Spring took advantage and scored, and the half ended 13-0.

The 3rd quarter began with a great kick-off by Alonso Acosta, and the Lions began from their 6 yard
line.  Their drive bogged down thanks to great defensive plays by Graham Jones, Daniel Tomlinson
and Cameron Wilson.  However, a fumble after the Lions punt set them up on the Spartans 25 yard
line and they scored a few plays later.

The 4th quarter finally saw the Spartans put together a good scoring drive highlighted by receivers
Jake Soltis, Alonzo Acosta and Tyler Garcia from Travis Hanes, and tough running by Devante Barr.
After a series of personal fouls by the Lions, the Spartans took advantage, and Travis Hanes scored
on a sneak.  Alonzo Acosta continued his fine kicking by making the extra point.  However, the Lions
weren’t through scoring, and scored another touchdown, making the final score Spring Lions 33,
the Spartans 7.

September 2nd update:
Stratford 30  - Aldine MacArthur 0
The Green Team started the 1st Quarter with a drive that featured 3 catches for 32 yards by fullback
Jake Soltis from quarterback Travis Hanes.  The drive stalled at the Generals

12 yard line.  The Generals immediately fumbled the ball back to the Spartans.  Travis Hanes
scored on the next possession from the 10 yard line, highlighted by a hustling play by Will Mahan
from his tight end position on the left, clear across the field to deliver a pancake block on the
touchdown run. The extra point was unsuccessful.  The rest of the 1st quarter was taken up by a
drive by the Generals that was halted by a great defensive play by Graham Baker who made a
leaping knock down of a long pass.  The following series by MacArthur was impacted by a big sack
by Jordan Bernstein.

The first series of the 2nd Quarter began with a good first down run by Kyle Cassanover followed by
a catch and run of 25 yards by Jake Soltis from Travis Hanes.  This was followed by a 14 yard catch
and run by Darius Arnold for the touchdown. The extra point was good by Alonso Acosta and the
Spartans were up 13-0.  On the ensuing kick-off, the Generals fumbled the ball giving the Spartans
good field position to score again before the half.  After a critical fumble recovery by Will Mahan, to
maintain possession, Alonso Acosta kicked a 36 yard field goal to end the half Spartans 16
Generals 0.

The 2nd half started by the Generals turning the ball over to the Spartans on the 22 yard line.  After a
tough run by Devante Barr, Jake Soltis caught pass in the flat from Travis Hanes and then ran over
three Generals in route to an 18 yard touchdown.  Extra point by Alonso Acosta was good and the
Spartans led  23-0.  In the 4th quarter, after another defensive stand by the Spartans, they took over
at the 49 and with Brandon Newman at quarterback, a good throw to Will Mahan was good for 15
yards. Successive runs by Devante Barr and Brandon Newman put the ball on the 9 yard line where
Javier Mendosa scored on a twisting turning run.  Alonso Acosta was good on the extra point
making the final score 30-0 in favor of the Spartans.
