| November 19th update: 18-5A DISTRICT MEET AND REGIONALS: October 29, 2009 and November 7, 2009 The Varsity Boys competed in the District 18-5A District competition on October 29. Marshall Holland finished fifth overall with a fabulous time of 16:33! With Marshall finishing in the top 10 runners at the District Meet, he qualified as an individual runner for the Regional Cross Country Meet at North Harris College on Saturday, November 7. The second runner in for the Spartans was Alex Suchman with a time of 18:20. Just one second back was Sullivan Barnes with a time of 18:21. The Spartans fourth and fifth place runners were Stephen Teng (19:02) and Jack Bentele (19:02). The JV Boys finished sixth out of seven complete teams at District. The first runner in for the Spartans was Junior Justin Alford with a time of 20:07. Sophomore James Cardenas (20:25), Junior Jeff Pena (21:45), Sophomore Chris Eustice (21:52), and Sophomore Taylor Jones (22:23), rounded out our top five JV runners. The Freshmen had three Spartans competing in this race. Oscar Truong came in fifth overall with a fine time of 11:58! Harrison Vaporciyan and Joey Wilson came in within three seconds of one another to finish 21st and 22nd overall. Congratulations go out to Marshall and Oscar for medaling at the District Meet, and to all our fine runners for completing a season filled with injury and illness, but enduring these hardships with true Spartan spirit and the fortitude of champions. We salute Marshall Holland as he continued on his journey to his fourth Region 5A championships on November 7, where he represented our team in his typical Spartan fashion. And congratulations to our sisters in spirit, the SHS Girls Cross Country team, who had a tremendous year, finishing first in Varsity and JV levels at District, and advancing to represent our school in fine fashion at the Regional level. At the annual Boys Cross Country banquet, Marshall Holland was named Most Valuable Runner for the third year in a row. Junior Jack Bentele took home the Spartan Award, and Freshman Oscar Truong was awarded the Most Improved Athlete. Special thanks to Marshall for shepherding the team as Captain for the past three years; for his leadership, organizational skills, and patience in teaching the newcomers the ropes, and keeping the team going through summer, fall, winter and spring. This really is a year-round sport! We will truly miss him as we will our six other retiring Senior athletes: Jesse Alatorre, Cameron Bohls, Cameron Jones, Alex Suchman, Alec Sulak, and Ian Sulak. They have led the underclassmen with grace and strength of character, and we wish them all the best as they continue on their respective paths. And our huge thanks, as always, to Coach Janice King-Jones, who has taught the team not only lessons in running and teamwork, but also those of endurance, discipline, and loyalty. We are grateful for her untiring efforts and leadership and for her care in helping her boys to shine on the cross country course, and in many other areas of life as well. "All you have got to do is plant that seed in your mind, care for it, work steadily toward your goal, and it will become a reality." ~Earl Nightingale October 30th update: Marshall Holland also qualified at the District meet to go to regionals! Please click here for the Athletes Connection article. http://www.athletesconnection.com/content/view/5237/26/ October 28th update: MEMORIAL PARK TEMPO RUN: October 23, 2009 It seems like just yesterday when we competed in our first cross country meet at Spring Creek Park. We blinked, and here it is: the District Meet! How the season flew by. I want to take this time to thank all of the parents for their support in getting their athletes to practice and for supplying the Meet Day Provisions, as well as hosting the carbo-dinners. I hope to see you at the District Meet to support the athletes in this meet. This past Friday the athletes did a tempo run at Memorial Park. The Spartans had six athletes who had negative splits all the way through their tempo run. The athletes who ran negative were: Marshall Holland (-49 seconds), Sullivan Barnes (-60 seconds), Alex Suchman (-1:30 seconds), Oscar Truong (-1:47 seconds), Jack Bentele (-1:47 seconds), and Harrison Vaporciyan (-59 seconds). It’s always a good sign when on these tempo runs the athletes can run negative on their split times, as well as come under their finish time by a lot. GOOD JOB GUYS!! Let’s put it together for District on Thursday!!! It was good to see Jack Bentele back to competing in meets! The first Spartan in was Sullivan Barnes with a time of 19:23 for the 3.2 mile race. The second runner in for the Spartans was Alex Suchman with a time of 19:32. Our third, fourth and fifth runners came in within 7 seconds of one another: Jesse Alatorre (first time running on Varsity), came in with a time of 20:18, Stephen Teng came in at 20:24, and adding up the team score was Jack Bentele with a time of 20:25. The JV Boys also competed at the Strake Jesuit Meet. Our first JV Spartan runner in was James Cardenas with a time of 20:42. Our second and third runners in were Chris Eustice (21:25) and Jeff Pena (21:50). Adding up the team scores were our fourth and fifth runners, Michael Lipnick (22:29) and Ian Sulak (22:33). The two Freshmen Spartans also competed at the Strake Jesuit Meet in a 2-mile race. Joey Wilson came in at 12:43, and Harrison Vaporciyan at 12:55. We missed our Captain, Marshall Holland, who was out with a foot injury, and hope he is feeling up to par soon. We’ll need him to shepherd the team towards PR’s and region qualification at District on October 29 at Bear Creek Park. Here’s to the vision and the hard work entailed! A VISION AND A TASK ARE THE HOPE OF THE WORLD.” October 13th update: SAM HOUSTON INVITATIONAL: October 10, 2009 The Varsity Boys competed in the mud and muck at the Sam Houston Invitational this past Saturday against 24 area schools in a 3-mile race. Marshall Holland was the 1st Spartan in with a time of 16: 11 (7th individually). Sullivan Barnes was the next runner in with a time of 17:23. Alex Suchman was the 3rd Spartan to finish with a time of 17:40. The 4th Spartan runner in was Stephen Teng with a 3-mile time of 18:38. Cameron Jones was the 5th Spartan in with a time of 18:53. This next week the Spartans will be competing on the District course at Bear Creek Park. It is SO important that the athletes run and compete that 1st mile correctly. The 1st mile is the key to being in the race after the 1st mile! The 1st mile split should be under 5:30. The JV Boys also competed in a 3-mile race at Sam Houston Invitational. It was good to see Justin Alford back competing. Justin’s 3-mile time was 19:31, closely followed by Chris Eustice with a time of 19:42. Ian Sulak and Michael Lipnick came in 3rd and 4th for the Spartans with times of 20:21 and 20:22, respectively. The 5th Spartan in was Jesse Alatorre with a time of 21:21. Once again, in order to stay in the race, runners must run that 1st mile correctly. In this case, JV splits for the 1st mile should be under 5:45. Freshmen Spartans to compete in the 2-mile race were Joey Wilson (18th-12:21) and Harrison Vaporciyan (24th-12:54). Both Joey and Harrison broke 13:00! Freshmen goal for District is to run the 1st mile under 6:00 & finish with an even split for the 2nd mile. Thanks to all of the parents who braved the mud and the muck at TC Jester Park to come and see our athletes compete. At least it didn’t rain on us….it was just so muddy! Also, thanks to our parents for contributing to the Boys XC “Born to Run” auction basket for SportsFest 2009 (October 17th). Make sure to place a bid on some great running accessories and gift certificates to Taste of Texas, Carrabba’s, and Finish Strong Sports. NEXT MEET: Date: Saturday, October 17, 2009 Meet: Strake Jesuit Invitational Place: Bear Creek Park Time: 8:00 a.m. “It is not whether you get knocked down; it’s whether you get up.” Vince Lombardi October 5th update: McNEIL INVITATIONAL: October 3, 2009 Mother Nature did cooperate with us for the Round Rock Meet! It didn’t start drizzling until we left the park to come back to Houston. Only our Varsity runners competed at this meet. The course was a fast course, and some of the times that the athletes ran were fantastic! This was a 5K course which will be used for the State XC Meet, to be held the 2nd weekend in November. Marshall Holland once again can wear his “Why is everyone chasing me?” shirt with confidence as he crossed the finish line in 11th place followed by 385(!!!) other runners. With a time of 16:25, Marshall’s feat was made more difficult by the fact that he was sick. His competitive spirit is truly impressive! CONGRATULATIONS MARSHALL! Sullivan Barnes was the next runner in with a time of 17:57. Alex Suchman was the 3rd Spartan to finish with a time of 18:17. 1st time Varsity runner, Freshman Oscar Truong, was the 4th Spartan in with a time of 19:43! Keep working hard Oscar…you’ll just get better!! The 5th runner in for SHS was Cameron Jones with a time of 19:52. Junior Stephen Teng also completed the course and showed tremendous Spartan spirit and heart by running more than half of it minus a running shoe – over rocks and gravel most of the way. Way to compete, Stephen! To view stats for the entire meet, visit www.run-far.com. NEXT MEET-- Date: Saturday, October 10, 2009 Meet: Sam Houston Invitational Place: T C Jester Park Time: 8:00 a.m. "Our goals can only be reached through the vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success." ~Pablo Picasso CY-FAIR INVITATIONAL: September 25, 2009 First, thanks go out to a Susan and Rodney Bohls for screening our Spartan XC Spirit t-shirts that read: “Why is everybody chasing me?” The shirts look great and raised some funds for district lunch and other expenses. And belated thanks go out to Glenn and Glenda Barnes for serving us up some mean breakfast tacos and OJ at the SBISD meet. Thank you from all of us! The XC team has been plagued with sickness and injuries this past week so much so that we had to combine the junior varsity and varsity teams in order to compete as a team on one level---junior varsity. The course was extremely hilly, and most of the course trail was narrow with gravel rock lining it. And to top it off, most of the 2nd mile was up-hill! We had 2 Spartans finish in the top 15 on the junior varsity level. Taking his new “Why is everybody chasing me?” t-shirt to heart, Marshall Holland came in 1st individually with a time of 16:55 & Sully Barnes came in 4th overall with a time of 18:05., followed by Cameron Jones at 20.01. Stephen Teng (20.04), Oscar Truong (20.18), Alec Sulak (20.29) and Chris Eustice (20.56) were impressive competing on this course. Last year, Stephen & Alec ran in the Extra race, which was a 2-mile race & now this year, they were able to compete on the 4800 meter course. Oscar had his eyes opened on this course & did extremely well at this meet. Sophomores Michael Lipnick and Taylor Jones honed their skills on this course as did freshmen Joey Wilson and Harrison Vaporciyan. Good job guys! September 23rd update: SEPTEMBER 19, 2009 UPDATE: SPRING BRANCH ISD INVITATIONAL The Varsity Boys competed in the SBISD Invitational on September 19th with 12 other area schools & came in 8th overall. Considering the Spartans had 1 key runner not running & another runner competing under the weather, I thought we did rather well. The 1st Spartan in was Marshall Holland who came in 6th overall with a time of 15:37 in the 2.9 mile race. Our next runner in was Alex Suchman, who ran his PR for this year with a time of 16:49. The Spartan’s 3rd runner in was Sully Barnes with a time of 17:31. Once again, Sully ran a PR for this season! New comer to varsity competition, Stephen Teng was the 4th runner in for the Spartans with a time of 18:10. I was REALLY impressed by how Stephen handled the step up to varsity competition. Way to work Stephen! Congratulations to Marshall for his award! The JV Boys also competed at the SBISD Invitational by running a 2.9 mile race. They came in 9th overall out of 12 area schools. In this race, the Spartans had 3 runners come in under 20:00. Those runners were Alec Sulak (19:12), Jeff Pena (19:28) & Ian Sulak (19:48). Keep working hard guys; your goal should be to get your times in the 18:00’s & you can do it if you just keep on working! In the Freshmen race, the Spartans had 3 athletes running & all 3 athletes broke 13:00!! The 1st Freshman Spartan in was Oscar Truong (who also received a medal for his 13th place) with a time of 12:32. The next runner in was Joey Wilson, with a time of 12:53. Harrison Vaporciyan lowered his 2-mile time once again by running 12:57. Way to go guys & keep on working hard to lower you times! Congratulations to Oscar for his award! Thanks to all our supporters and fans who came out to cheer the guys on, especially our old teammate, Andrew Hadley, and our congratulations to the Girls XC for their performance at the Invitational! NEXT MEET: Date: Friday, September 25, 2009 Meet: Cy-Fair Invitational Place: Spring Creek Park Time: 4:00 pm Open 3200 meters, 4:20 pm Freshmen 3200 meters, 5:05 pm JV 4800 meters, 5:50 pm Varsity 4800 meters September 16th update: SEPTEMBER 12: OAK RIDGE INVITATIONAL Although plagued by injury and illness, the boys showed a lot of heart in completing the 3.2 mile course at the Oak Ridge Invitational in Conroe. In the misty, somewhat-cooler weather, we had only 4 athletes competing on the Varsity level this week, as Cameron Jones was out with concussion- like symptoms from his accident over Labor Day. Marshall Holland took a ninth place medal and was the first Spartan in with a time of 17.01. Our next runner, Alex Suchman, came in at 18:12, followed by Jack Bentele at 19:10 and Sully Barnes at 19:57. Congratulations to Marshall for his award and to the guys for hanging in there through adversity! The JV Boys competed in their first 5K (3.2) race of the season. Stephen Teng was the first runner in for the Spartans with a finish time of 20:18. The 2nd runner in was James Cardenas with an overall time of 20:36 followed by Alec Sulak (21:20), Chris Eustice (21:44), Ian Sulak (22:12) and Matt Hays (24:01). Michael Lipnick and Taylor Jones completed the 1-mile course in 6:36 and 7:07 respectively. Way to move it on up guys! In the Freshmen race, the Spartans had 2 athletes running. Joey Wilson was the 1st Spartan to finish this 2-mile race. In his 1st 2-mile race, Joey finished with a 12:46! Just 13 seconds behind him was Harrison Vaporcyian with a finish time of 12:59! Way to break 13:00 guys!! Keep up the hard work! Quote for the Week: The truth is…running hurts. No one gets faster without meeting their personal pain barrier head on. NEXT MEET AT NOTTINGHAM PARK – COME OUT AND SUPPORT XC!!! Date: Saturday, September 19, 2009 Meet: SBISD Invitational Place: Nottingham Park Time: 8 am-Varsity Boys (5K); 9 am-JV Boys (5K); 10 am-Freshmen Boys (3200 meters) . Log in to Texas Running for more regional & state running news. http://tx.milesplit.us/meets/results/2009/cc September 4th update: The Varsity Boys competed at the Lamar Consolidated Invitational this past Friday against 24 other area teams. With 180 points, the varsity placed 7th overall. The 1st Spartan runner in was Marshall Holland, with his 1st 5K time of the season of 16:48. In looking at my records, Marshall matched his 2007 Regional XC Meet Time in his 1st 5K of the season! Way to go Marshall! Keep working hard!! Our 2nd & 3rd runners in were Sully Barnes & Alex Suchman (27th-17:53/29th-17:56) respectively. In looking at the District times from last year, Sully ran his District 5K in 18:47 & Alex ran his in 17:50. Looks like the Tempo Runs are beginning to pay off guys! Way to work!! Jack Bentele was our 4th runner in @ 18:48 & Cameron Jones came in @ 19:15. Due to the hot, dry weather conditions that the runners had to compete in, the Varsity Runners learned that hydrating & eating habits are very important on race days. That it WILL affect your race. The JV Boys came in 6th overall as a team out of 15 area teams. 1st Spartan Runner in for JV 2- mile race was Stephen Teng with a time of 12:20. Stephen’s time last week in his 2-mile race was 12:40. Way to improve! Our 2nd runner in just 1 second behind Stephen was James Cardenas. James’ time last week was 12:44 on a much harder course! Our 3rd , 4th & 5th runners, Alec Sulak, Ian Sulak & Jesse Alatorre, came in within 20 seconds of James! Time differential of the 1st 5 runners was just 28 seconds!! Way to work guys! In the Freshmen race, the Spartans had 2 athletes running. Oscar Truong, in his 1st cross country meet of his season ran a 12:58! With just 1 day of Tempo Runs & 1 day of Fartlek! Harrison V. came in just 6 seconds behind Oscar with a 13:04. With our 9th athletes working so hard, it’s a shame that we can’t get 2 more 9th runners out so that we could enter & compete for team recognition. I REALLY think when all is said & done, the FRESHMEN Team could challenge Strake for a Team Championship by District. Meet Day thanks go to the Benteles/Gibbons for providing the water, Lipnicks for providing the Gatorades, the Holland’ family for providing the bananas & oranges & the Cowart family for providing the cold towels. EVERYTHING provided for this meet was DEFINITELY appreciated because of the hot/dry conditions! NEXT MEET: Date: Saturday, September 12, 2009 Meet: Oak Ridge Cross Country Inv. Place: Oak Ridge H.S., Conroe, Tx Time: 8:00 a.m. Varsity 5K, 9:40 a.m. JV 5K, 10:35 a.m. Freshmen 2 mile The bus will leave from the East side of SHS at 5:30 a.m. TEAM MEETING will be in Rubber Gym @ 5:15 a.m. All athletes will ride the bus. August 24th update: BOYS CROSS COUNTRY - SPRING ISD RESULTS The Boys XC team had a great showing on 8/22/09 at the Spring Preview Invitational at Spring Creek Park in Tomball. This course was truly challenging because of the finish…it was up-hill and sandy to boot (not to mention hot and humid)! Thanks to all our supporters and a special shout-out to AJ Menniti, one of our esteemed 2009 graduates, who had not yet left for college and spent his dwindling (and early morning) vacation hours cheering on his compadres. Good luck in San Diego AJ! The Varsity Boys kicked things off by taking 3rd place behind MacArthur and Memorial. Team Captain, Senior Marshall Holland, was our first runner in with a 10:39 which captured him 4th place trophy. Our 2nd-5th runners in were within 21 seconds of each other. They were, in order of finish: Sophomore Sully Barnes (11:20-14th), Senior Alex Suchman (11:34-17th), Junior Jack Bentele (11: 40-19th), & Senior Cameron Jones (11:41-20th). Only 62 seconds between our first and fifth runner...getting better every race! Way to go guys! Here’s a comparison of 2009/2008 Spring Preview times for Varsity runners: Holland 10:39/10:42 Barnes 11:20/11:43 Suchman 11:34/11:53 Bentele 11:40/12:20 Jones 11:41/12:17 The JV Boys came in 2nd place behind Klein Oak. August 17th update: The Boys XC Season officially started 8/15/09 with Time Trials held at Memorial Park against Strake Jesuit and Memorial. Thanks to all who were there to see some REALLY good competition in one of the most difficult sports - running at race pace over a 3-mile course. We had multiple improvements from last year’s Time Trial times with some of our runners bettering their times by over two minutes! Our goal is to have no more than a 60 second difference between our #1 runner and our #5 runner….so we still have work to do. Here is a comparison of 2009/2008 times for Varsity and JV. CONGRATULATIONS GUYS!!
