| Varsity Playoffs February 16, 2010 STRATFORD 53 CINCO RANCH 55 The Lady Spartans saved their best for last against the Cinco Ranch Bobcats, but unfortunately our girls best on Tuesday night came up two points short against the experienced and talented Bobcats. I really think that Stratford may have played the best all around game that I've seen them play in the last three years. The girls were very well prepared and focused and Coach Martin's Game Plan was obviously the right game plan. The girls were spot on with their 3-pointers, hitting 7 out of 15 (47%) and also out-rebounded Cinco (34-28) and racked up 20 assists to Cinco's 13. Statistically, Kelli Evans had 17 points, 9 assists, 5 steals and 4 rebounds; Rodneisha Milum scored 16 points and had 13 rebounds, 4 blocked shots, 2 assists and 2 steals; LaShae Crews had 13 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal; Shanita Coleman scored 5 points and had 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals and Meredith Hohl scored 2 to go along with 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. All of the fans, coaches and especially the players themselves should be very proud of the Stratford Team for the outstanding effort that was put forth in what was the final game of the 2009-2010 season. February 12th update: STRATFORD 64 SPRING WOODS 30 The ladies saved their best all round performance for the last regular season game as they dominated Spring Woods from start to finish. It was a game filled with highlights, especially for those senior girls who were playing their last game ever on the Stratford hardwood. Ali Moses, playing the best game of her career, scored 11 in the first quarter alone. For the first time since I have been watching (3 years), a Stratford player hit a long range buzzer beater from MID- COURT to end a period. That occurred at the end of the first period as Ali connected from the left side at mid-court. Ali finished the game with 14 points to go along with 4 steals. Rodneisha Milum scored 15 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and dished 5 assists; Kelli Evans had 12 points (including 8 of 8 from the free throw line) and stole the ball 7 times; La Shae Crews scored 9 (all three pointers), and also had 3 steals and 3 assists; Shanita Coleman scored 4 point (on two NBA style spin/fade-aways) and had 5 rebounds; Senior, Jessie Lee scored 4; Senior, Emma Johnson scored 2; Senior Ayah Doleh was robbed of a trip to the line by a blind referee; Meredith Hohl had 2 points and 3 rebounds and Kristen Peters had 2 points. Stratford will open their playoff season next week against Cinco Ranch on Tues, Feb 16th at Stratford at 7:30pm. February 5th update: STRATFORD 49 MEMORIAL 60 The Lady Spartans lost a heartbreaker to Memorial Friday night at Memorial. By the end of the game, Stratford had outplayed Memorial in most areas. They did not, however, defend the perimeter well and Memorial made them pay big time by draining 9 of 16 three point shots and that was the difference in the game. For Stratford, the highlight of the game occurred at the beginning of the fourth quarter when their hustling defense helped them cut Memorial's 18 point lead to 8 in a matter of minutes. With around 5 minutes left to play, it looked to be a game again. A timeout was called at that point and after that the game played on out fairly evenly, resulting in the final score. Rodneisha Milum led the Spartans with 21 points, 14 rebounds and 5 steals; Kelli Evans had 17 points; LaShae Crews had 4 points, 4 assists and 4 rebounds and Shanita Coleman had 4 points, 3 assists and 3 rebounds January 30th update: STRATFORD 44 ALIEF TAYLOR 54 The Lady Spartans suffered their fourth district loss Tuesday night at the hands of a feisty Taylor Team. For Stratford, more than anything else, the main problem was that shots that normally fall just were not falling. Taylor's defense played a role in that, but if we had just been able to shoot our season average the game probably would have had a different outcome. To the girls' credit, they scrapped and played their hardest all the way to the final buzzer. Rodneisha Milum led the way with 15 points. Once again, Rodneisha recorded a "double-double" as she savaged the boards for 21 rebounds. LaShae Crews had 9 points, 3 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 steals; Kelli Evans had 8 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists; Ali Moses scored 5; Rachel Rapier had 3 points; and Meridith Hohl and Shanita Coleman each had a basket. January 25th update: STRATFORD 67 ELSIK 89 The good news is that the Lady Spartans enjoyed their highest scoring game of the year against Elsik. The bad news is that they lost by 22 points to the highly ranked Lady Rams. Despite a bevy of turnovers, caused primarily by Elsik's high pressure defense, our girls actually played fairly well. In addition to the turnovers, another big problem for our girls were the 10 three pointers that the Lady Rams rained on them. Elsik hit four 3-pointers in the first quarter on their way to a 29-15 lead. Stratford played a very nice second quarter, outscoring Elsik 17-15, and only trailed at the half by a score of 44-32. The second half was somewhat of a track meet. Our girls kept up with the deep and speedy Elsik team fairly well, but Elsik got hot again with their 3's and outscored our girls 45-35 in the half, resulting in the final score of 89-67. Kelli Evans led the Lady Spartans in scoring with 29 points. Along with the points, Kelli also pulled down 9 rebounds. Once again Rodneisha Milum had a "double-double" with 12 points and 17 big rebounds; Shanita Coleman also had a "double-double" with10 points and 10 rebounds; Ali Moses scored 5 and had 4 assists; LaShae Crews had 4 points and 4 rebounds; Rachel Rapier had 4 points before being forced out of the game with an injury sustained while "taking one for the team" and Meredith Hohl had 3 points and 3 rebounds. Please make the trip to Alief Taylor this coming Tuesday to support out girls as they take on the improving Lady Lions at 7 PM. The girls still have a good shot at finishing high in the District 18 standings and all remaining games will be important and hard fought. Your support will be greatly appreciated by the girls. January 15th update: STRATFORD 47 SPRING WOODS 33 The Lady Spartans racked up another win by beating a feisty Spring Woods Team last night at Spring Woods. The game was pretty sloppy with lots of turnovers and poor shooting (for the most part), but a win is a win and Stratford now stands at 13-9. Statistical highlights: Kelli Evans was on target for 29 points and also had 6 rebounds, 6 steals and 5 assists; Rodneisha Milum had 12 points, 22 big rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists; Meredith Hohl scored 4 and had 2 rebounds and 2 steals and Shanita Coleman scored 2 and had 5 rebounds. Please come out to the Stratford Gym and cheer the girls on this coming Tuesday at 7PM. Their opponent will be the District 18 leading Elsik Rams and the Lady Spartans will need all the support they can get. STRATFORD 56 NORTHBROOK 24 The Lady Spartans, sparked by Rodneisha Milum's season high of 28 points, cruised to an easy victory over Northbrook last night. The game started off with both teams a bit sluggish early on but really swung in our girls' favor once we started pressuring Northbrook with a mid-court trap. That tactic produced quite a few steals, leading to easy baskets and broke the game open in Stratford's favor. As stated above, Rodneisha led all scorers with 28 points. Along with the points, Rodneisha pulled down 9 rebounds, had 8 steals, 5 assists and 2 blocked shots; Kelli Evans scored 11, along with 8 assists and 3 steals; Meredith Hohl, in only her second start of the year, had a very nice all round game scoring 7, and grabbing 8 rebounds. Along with her points and rebounds Meredith also had 4 assists and 4 steals; Shanita Coleman scored 4 and had 5 rebounds; Emma Johnson got in on the act with 4 points (including a very impressive drive to the basket) and 2 steals; and Ayah Doleh chipped in with a basket. January 13th update: STRATFORD 32 MEMORIAL 49 Our Lady Spartans lost a tough one Tuesday Night to the rival Mustangs. The Mustangs started off good early and took a 10-6 lead into the second quarter. Stratford stepped up the pressure on the defensive end and played a nice second quarter trailing by only one point (20-19) at the half. The score was still close at 29-25 going into the final quarter, but the Mustangs went on a 20-7 run in the fourth and won the game by 17. For Stratford, Rodneisha Milum had 9 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks; LaShae Crews had 7 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals; Kelli Evans had 6 points and 5 rebounds; freshman, Rachel Rapier played a fine all-round game and scored 6 points, and Shanita Coleman had 4 points and 3 rebounds. Let's get'em next time girls! Our next game is at Hastings, Friday the 8th at 7 PM. Please come out and help cheer our young ladies to victory. STRATFORD 41 HASTINGS 37 Our Lady Spartans got back to their winning ways against Hastings last night at their place. The girls were playing great early and then really kicked it into overdrive when Ali Moses hit the floor on fire hitting 3 straight 3 point shots at which point Stratford led 22-6. Our girls cooled off a little near the end of the half but still took a 29-20 lead into halftime. Hastings opened the second half with a trapping defense that led to some turnovers by the Spartans but we still managed a 33-30 lead after 3 quarters. Our young ladies hung tough in the fourth quarter and finished with a 4 point victory. Kelli Evans finished the game with 17 points and 5 assists; Ali finished with 9 points, 3 assists and 2 steals; Rodneisha Milum played a very nice all-round game, finishing with 7 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocked shots; Shanita Coleman scored 4 points and had 6 rebounds, Meredith Hohl scored 2 and snatched 4 rebounds and Rachel Rapier finished with 2 points. Please come out and support the Lady Spartans at 7PM this coming Tuesday as they take on Northbrook at our place. January 4th update: 1/2/2010: Stratford 38 - Katy 31 The Lady Spartans played a great last 4 minutes of the fourth quarter to secure their victory in what was a very slow paced and low scoring game. The Stratford Ladies got off to a good start in the first quarter and led by a score of 10 to 7 at the quarter mark. The second quarter saw Katy raining 3's on us as they came back and built a 23 to 19 halftime lead. In the 3rd quarter the Spartans extended their defense a little and, holding the Tigers to a goose egg, retook the lead at 24-23. Katy dominated the first half of the fourth, taking back a temporary lead, but our ladies closed strong (hitting some key free throws and also getting some very strong play from Rodneisha Milum), and secured their tenth victory of the season. Rodneisha led all scorers, finishing with 18 to go along with 13 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. Kelli Evans finished with 12 point, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. LaShae Crews added 3 points and 4 rebounds, Shanita Coleman had 3 steals, 3 rebounds and 2 points, Meredith Hohl sank a basket and Ali Moses finished with a big rebound and free throw near the end of the game. The ladies will be playing one of their most important games of the year against district rival Memorial tomorrow (1/5/2010) at 7 PM. Please come out and help cheer the girls to victory tomorrow night. December 17th update: Lady Spartan basketball will play district game #2 Friday vs Alief Taylor with Freshmen at 3, JV at 4:30 and varsity at 6. Your Stratford Lady Spartans were fairly successful in the Spring Branch Tournament this past weekend. They compiled a record of 2-1, with an average performance in their win over Dawson, a great performance in their win over Lamar and two very bad quarters which led to their loss to Klein. The game recaps are as follows: On Thursday the Lady Spartans prevailed over Pearland Dawson by a score of 45-35. For three quarters the game was pretty sloppy with neither team doing much good on the offensive end. In the fourth quarter our girls stepped up their defense, got some easy transition baskets and pulled away for a 10-point victory. As far as the numbers go, here are the highlights: Kelli Evans finished with 24 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals; Rodneisha Milum had 9 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocked shots; and Shanita Coleman chipped in with 6 points and 5 rebounds. Friday morning saw the Spartans losing to an improved Klein team by the score of 39-32. LaShae Crews hit the floor on fire scoring the Spartans first 14 points in leading the girls to an early second quarter lead of 18-8. For the balance of the second quarter and the entire third quarter the wheels kind of fell off as Klein went on a 28-5 run to take a 13 point lead going into the fourth quarter. Our girls rallied pretty well in the fourth quarter closing the gap to 7 points at the buzzer. The highlight numbers are as follows: LaShae finished with 16 points; Kelli had 7 points and 4 assists; and Rodneisha had 7 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. Saturday morning saw the Spartans defeat Lamar by the score of 58-39. The game was a fan and coach's dream game as the girls hit the floor focused and wearing their shooting glasses. Once again, LaShae Crews was hot early on scoring our first 8 points, as she connected on her first 3 attempts, 2 of which were 3-pointers. The first half also saw Allie Moses dropping a couple of 3's, Shanita Coleman hitting a couple of long 2's, Kelli Evans hitting some teardrop lay-ups and Rodneisha Milum finishing a couple of times on some strong post moves. By halftime the girls had a commanding 30-9 lead. The teams played fairly even in the second half as the Spartans finished with a 19-point victory. The great balance of our offensive attack is reflected in the highlight numbers, as follows: LaShae had 14 points and 7 rebounds; Kelli had 14 points, 7 assists and 7 rebounds, Shanita finished with 10 points; Rodneisha played great inside defense and pulled down a remarkable 18 rebounds while scoring 8 points, dishing 6 assists and rejecting 2 Lamar shots; and Allie Moses scored 6 points. |
