February 5th update:
Friday, January 29: STRATFORD 31 MEMORIAL 39
It was just a few weeks ago that the Lady Mustangs JV basketball team from Memorial High
School really took it to the SHS Lady Spartans JV team at Spartan gym, so anticipation for
“payback” was high on the minds of the Lady Spartans as they visited Mustang gym on Friday,
January 29. Although the Lady Spartans battled hard throughout the game, SHS found itself
coming up just a little short on the scoreboard to Memorial with a final score of 39-31.
The game started slowly in the scoring department with the Lady Mustangs up 7-4 at the end of
the first quarter. The Lady Mustangs really pulled away in the second quarter, scoring two 3-point
baskets during a 15-8 run which ended with a halftime score of 22-12 in favor of the Lady
Mustangs. Both teams came out in the third quarter battling and contesting each possession,
each team scoring just 6 points in the quarter. The fourth quarter is where the Lady Spartans
turned it on, outscoring the Lady Mustangs 13-11, but the Lady Spartans couldn’t quite make up
enough ground and fell to a very good Memorial Mustang team.
Spartan scoring included forward Jaime Hewitt leading the Lady Spartans again with 7 points,
point guard Ashley Walter scored 6 points, guard Kristen Peters scored 5 points including a big 3
point basket in the fourth quarter, center Rebekah Adair scored 4 points, guard Rima Baassiri
came alive during the game and scored 4 points, guard Jordan Mays had 3 points and forward
Gina Vans scored 2 points. The next opponent for the Lady Spartans is at home versus
Hastings on Tuesday, February 2.
Tuesday, January 26: STRATFORD 53 ALIEF TAYLOR 39
It was a beautiful, cool sunny day in Houston on Tuesday, January 26, when the SHS Lady
Spartan JV basketball team made a road trip down to Alief to visit the Taylor High School Lady
Lions. About two hours after their arrival, the Lady Spartans had posted another win with a final
score of 53-39.
Overall, the game was a pretty balanced scoring affair. The Lady Spartans found themselves
behind by a score of 12-9 at the end of the first quarter but from that point on, the game got
significantly more intense with the two teams posting a total of 7 team fouls in the second
quarter. Going into the locker room at halftime, the Lady Spartans led the game by a score of 26-
22. The third quarter was similarly intense with the Lady Spartans leading after three quarters
37-31. Our Lady Spartans really turned it on in the fourth quarter, outscoring Taylor 16-8 to pull
away to an impressive high scoring win.
Spartan scoring included forward Jaime Hewitt who again lead the Lady Spartans with 19 points,
center Rebekah Adair scored a solid 10 points in the post, guard Jordan Mays had 9 points the
hard way with 7 of them coming from the free throw line, forward Gina Vans came alive against
Taylor and scored 7 points, point guard Ashley Walter had 6 points and Johnesha “JoJo” Collins
posted 2 points. The next opponent for the Lady Spartans is Memorial High School at Mustang
gym on Friday January 29.
January 25th update:
Can you say “barn burner”? Well, that is exactly what was held between the Stratford High
School JV Lady Spartans and the Elsik High School JV Lady Rams at Stratford Gym on Tuesday,
January 19. The game was so good that a winner could not be determined during regulation
play. It took an overtime period for the Lady Spartans to emerge victorious with a final score of 61-
54.
The Lady Spartans were quick out of the gate at home and built a 13-5 lead by the end of the first
quarter. Not to be outdone, the Elsik Lady Rams “rammed” home 19 points in the second
quarter to lead 24-21 at halftime. The Lady Rams built on their lead in the second half and
ended the third quarter with an 8 point lead, 39-31. The fourth quarter is where the Lady
Spartans came alive, outscoring the Lady Rams 20-12, primarily on the tough, hustle play of
forward Jaime Hewitt, who had 10 points in the quarter and Jordan Mays who had five points in
the quarter including 3 critical free throws to tie the game at the end of regulation. During the
overtime period, the Lady Spartans were led by sharp shooter guard Kristen Peters who had 5
points in the period including one 3 point bomb and point guard Ashley Walter who was deadly
from the free throw line adding 4 points in the overtime period.
Spartan scoring was balanced once again with forward Jaime Hewitt leading the Lady Spartan
scoring effort with 18 points, guard Kristen Peters scoring 16 points including 4 three-pointers,
guard Jordan Mays with 11 points including 5 free throws, guard Ashley Walter with 9 points also
including 5 points from the charity stripe, center Rebekah Adair with 5 points and forward Gina
Vans who chipped in 2 points in that tough fourth quarter comeback. The next opponent for the
Lady Spartans is Alief Taylor at Alief Taylor gym on Tuesday January 26.
January 13th update:
STRATFORD 26 MEMORIAL 53
Any contest between the Stratford Spartans and the Memorial Mustangs is considered a “big
game”. Such a game was played by the Stratford Junior Varsity Lady Spartans and the Memorial
Junior Varsity Lady Mustangs on Tuesday, January 5. A larger than normal crowd showed up at
Spartan gym to support both teams and that unmistakable SHS/MHS rivalry vibe was certainly in
the air. Unfortunately for the Lady Spartans, this night was not to be theirs. From the opening tip,
the Lady Mustangs controlled the game and the Lady Spartan JV team fell to MHS by a score of
53 to 26.
Though the Lady Spartans battled valiantly throughout the entire contest, the Lady Mustangs shot
very well from the outset of the game and built a 19-10 lead in the first quarter from which they
never looked back. Allie Sawyer of the Lady Mustangs led all scorers in the game with 15 points,
including 7 in the final quarter to seal the victory for MHS. Jamie Hewitt and Ashley Walter led the
Lady Spartans with 6 points each. Other Lady Spartan scorers in the game included Rima
Baassiri with 4 points, Rebekah Adair, Gina Vans with 4, Kristin Peters with 1 and Kelli Luyster
with 1. The Lady Spartans next face the Lady Bears from Alief Hastings at Hastings gym on
Friday, January 8.
STRATFORD 27 HASTINGS 39
The SHS Lady Spartans JV team braved record challenging frigid temperatures on Friday,
January 8 as they traveled to Alief Hastings to face the Lady Fighting Bears. A hard fought game
from tip to final buzzer ended with the Lady Spartan JV team falling to HHS by a score of 39-27.
The JV Lady Spartans once again battled hard from start to finish. The Hastings Lady Bears shot
very well from the outset of the game including two 3-point baskets in the first quarter which
ended with the Lady Bears leading 13-8. The Lady Spartans kept the score close throughout the
game and drew to within 4 points by the end of the third quarter, but a 7-1 fourth quarter scoring
run by the Lady Bears led them to victory. Forward Jamie Hewitt led the Lady Spartans with 9
points. Rebekah Adair scored 8 points from the post and guard Ashley Walter added 5 points.
Guard Kristin Peters had 4 points and Forward Johnesha “JoJo” Collins added 1. The Lady
Spartans return home to Spartan gym on Tuesday January 12 where they will face the
