March 9th update:
Stratford JV Green vs. Hightower – February 25, 2010
Hightower was no match for the Stratford JV Green team. Stratford established a lead in the top of the
first inning and just continued to pour it on through the entire game. Strong pitching by Matt Innes and
Clyde Harvey kept Hightower’s bats quiet. Max Bredthauer doubled to start off the game. After a
stolen base and an error by Hightower the Spartans were on the board in the top of the first. Matt
Innes followed in the bottom of the first by striking out the side. Jake Duffy led off the second inning
with a walk and then stole second base. Will Duffy followed with a double scoring Jake Duffy. Clyde
Harvey and Cameron Johnson followed with singles and Will Duffy scored. Chris Farek reached on
an error which allowed Clyde Harvey to score. Chris Farek then stole second base. With runners at
2nd and 3rd Carter Magee hit a sac fly to right scoring Cameron Johnson. Josh Morris then doubled
to score Chris Farek. The top of the second inning ended with Stratford on top 6-0. Matt Innes faced
only four Hightower hitters in the bottom of the second inning. Jake Duffy and Will Duffy led off the top
of the third with walks. A single by Clyde Harvey, a bunt by Cameron Johnson and a double by Max
Bredthauer scored Jake Duffy, Will Duffy and Clyde Harvey. Errors by the Hightower outfield on fly
balls by Chris Farek and Carter Magee and a single by Josh Morris brought home Johnson,
Bredthauer and Farek. In the bottom of the third Hightower got on the board and made the score 14-
3. In the 4th inning Stratford tacked on seven more runs on errors by Hightower, a few walks, a
sacrifice fly by Jake Duffy and with hits by Chris Farek (2 singles), Will Duffy (single / 2 RBIs) and
Cameron Johnson (single / RBI). Clyde Harvey retired Hightower in the bottom of the 4th facing only 5
batters. Stratford scored one more run in the top of the 5th when Jake Duffy singled in David
Anderson after Anderson had led off with a triple. The final score was 22-3.
FB Austin vs. Stratford JV Green – February 26, 2010
It was a real pitcher’s duel through 5 innings. Excellent pitching by Chris Cooper kept FB Austin
scoreless through 4. Stratford got on the board in the bottom of the third with a walk by Max
Bredthauer who reached second on a passed ball. Bredthauer then stole third and scored on a
ground out to shortstop by Chris Farek. Carter Magee followed with a double to right field but the
Spartans could not get him home. Josh Morris came on to pitch in the top of the fifth and struck out
two while keeping FB Austin scoreless. In the 6th inning errors by Stratford and some timely hitting
allowed FB Austin to take the lead 4-1. Cameron Johnson came on in the sixth to relieve Josh Morris
and then set down FB Austin in the top of the 7th with two strikeouts and a ground out. The Spartans
rallied in the bottom of the 7th but came up short and the game ended in a 4-3 loss to FB Austin.
Katy Taylor vs. Stratford JV Green – February 27, 2010
Matt Hays took the mound for Stratford against Katy Taylor and pitched three scoreless innings. The
Katy pitchers were just as effective. Cameron Johnson scored for the Spartans in the bottom of the
first inning as the result of some errors by Katy and some aggressive base running. In the fourth
inning Katy scored one run. David Anderson came on in relief of Matt Hays in the top of the 5th. Katy
Taylor’s bats got hot and Stratford made a few errors which allowed Katy to add 4 more runs making
the score 6-1. Stratford could not get anything going in the bottom of the 5th or 6th and the game
ended with a 6-1 Katy Taylor win.
March 1st update:
February 22nd
JV White 10 Episcopal 4
Going into the top of the 4th the Spartans trailed 2-0. Singles by Matt Milan and Tyler Denney put
runners on 2nd and 1st. Alex Eberly drilled a single up the middle on a hit and run to score Milan and
an error on the throw scored Denney and tied the game up at 2-2. In the top of the 5th Brad Johnson
took 4 straight balls, Kyle Casanover moved Johnson to 2nd on a sac-bunt. Ryan Hickman hit a
single to give us 1st and 3rd situation, and then proceeded to steal 2nd to give us runners on 2nd and
3rd. Colton Candelario hit into a fielder’s choice which scored Johnson from 3rd. Hickman proceed
to score on a wild pitch to give the Spartans a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the 5th. The following
inning the Spartans scored 4 runs on singles by Tyler Denney, John Scott, and Kyle Casanover. The
Spartans tack on 2 more runs in the 7th to stretch their lead to 10-2. Bottom of the 7th the Knights of
Episcopal scored 2 more runs to bring the final score to 10-4.
The Spartans were led in hitting by Tyler Denney who when 2-4 with 3 runs and Kyle Casanover who
went 2-3 with 1 run, 1 walk, 2 stolen bases, and 1 sac-bunt.
On the mound the Spartans had Alex Eberly who pitch 3 innings on 63 pitches, giving up 2 runs, and
retiring 4 batters. Colton Candelario pitched 3 innings on 54 pitches, giving up no runs, and sitting
down 5 batters. Tyler Denney closed out the game pitching 1 inning on 19 pitches, giving up 2 runs
and retiring 2 batters.
February 19th
JV Green 12 Lamar Consolidated 3 (Scrimmage)
On Friday night the Stratford JV Green baseball team took on Lamar Consolidated and FB Travis in a
scrimmage doubleheader. The Spartans scored two victories on Friday with good hitting, pitching and
defense.
The Spartans jumped right on Lamar consolidated with the first pitch of the game as Jake Duffy
hammered a stand up double into the right center gap. This was followed by a walk by Chris Farek
and a single by Carter Magee. With bases loaded Matt Milan hit a grounder to first and LC tried to get
the force at the plate. Duffy slid into the catcher hard causing him to drop the ball and Stratford was on
the board and did not look back. Chris Farek scored from third on an infield ground out by Clyde
Harvey. The second inning was more of the same by Stratford with Max Bredthauer leading off with a
double to left center. Cameron Johnson followed with a walk. Ryan Hickman reached on an error by
the second baseman which also allowed Bredthauer to score. With walks by Jake Duffy and Carter
Magee and a single by Matt Milan the inning ended on the imposed run rule with the Spartans ahead
6-0. The third inning opened up with singles by Clyde Harvey, Will Duffy and Max Bredthauer.
Bredthauer’s single scored Harvey. With Duffy on third and Bredthauer on second Matt Innes lined a
double to left center scoring both runners. At the end of the inning the score was 9-0. In the 4th inning
Carter Magee hit a 1 out stand up double to right center field. After advancing to third on a ground out
Magee scored on an error by the third baseman on a hard grounder hit by Harvey. The score was now
10-0. An error and a passed ball allowed Patrick O’Keefe to get on base and advance to second
base. The right fielder misplayed a drive by Ryan Hickman allowing O’Keefe to score. LC got on the
board with two runs in the 5th to make the score 11-2. The Spartans scored a final run in the 6th on
singles by Innes, Anderson and Candelario. LC added two runs in the bottom of the 6th as the game
ended 12 – 4 with the Spartans on top. Excellent Game 1 pitching performances were turned in by
Chris Cooper and Tyler Denney. Cooper pitched two innings and gave up no runs while striking out
two. In 1 1/3 innings Denney gave up two runs and struck out 2 batters.
February 19th
JV Green 6 FB Travis 2 (Scrimmage)
In the second game against FB Travis it was a pitcher’s duel for the first four innings with neither team
scoring any runs. Stratford’s only hits were a double by Carter Magee in the 1st and an infield single
by Matt Milan in the 4th. Matt Hays and Clyde Harvey threw excellent 2 hit baseball through four
innings. The bats came alive in the 5th for the Spartans. Tyler Denney singled to start things off and
scored on a David Anderson drive to centerfield that was mishandled by FB Travis. Michael Tedder
then drew a walk. With runners at 2nd and 3rd and the FB Travis infield moved in to cut down the run
at the plate Jake Duffy drove a hard shot between first and second scoring Anderson. The inning
ended with the Spartans leading 2 – 0. The 6th inning saw the Spartans score 4 more runs on a walk
by Max Bredthauer followed by singles by Tyler Denney, Matt Hays and Miles Hennington. An error on
a pickoff attempt at first base and two passed balls allowed the Spartans to score 3 more runs. David
Anderson pitched the final two innings. FB Travis scored 2 in the bottom of the 6th but that was all
they could muster and Stratford sealed a 6-2 win.
