Stratford 48 vs. Montgomery 45
District Champions!!! The Stratford JV boys kept it rolling along with another victory to keep their district record perfect at 13-0 with a win over the Montgomery Bears on Friday, February 10th at Montgomery’s main court. The final score: Stratford 48 vs. Montgomery 45. With the victory, the Spartans clinched the outright, non-tied district championship. The Spartan’s were very sluggish in the first half and were behind by 10 points at halftime, probably due in part to the team bus being stuck on Hwy 249 for almost an hour waiting for an accident to clear from the road. Then, as their 20-minute warm-up time was ticking off the clock, they could not take the court to actually warm-up due to Montgomery honoring the parents of two of their basketball teams with a ceremony at mid-court. In the third quarter, Stratford closed the deficit to just 2 points. Then, in the decisive fourth quarter, the Spartan’s outscored the Bears 14-9 to win the game by 5 points. With this victory, the JV boys have won 16 of their last 17 games.
The Spartans were led in scoring by Jody with (15) points; followed by Micah (13), Corey (6), Patrick (6), Juwan (3), Connor (2), Matt Martin (2), and Reese (1). The Spartan’s shot out to a quick 8-2 lead only for Brenham to end the first quarter on a 9-0 run and lead, 11-8. With continued full court pressure by the Cubs, Stratford fell further behind by halftime, 31-24. The Spartans climbed back to tie the score at the end of the third quarter 39-39. The final score: Stratford 51 vs. Spring Woods 41. A win is a win, although the Spartan's did not have an excellent game against a team they had beaten by 48 points earlier this month. Stratford ran out to a quick 8-0 lead only to finish the first quarter leading 12-10. Stratford 56 vs. Brenham 51
The Stratford JV boys moved to 5-0 in district play with an exciting win over the Brenham Cubs on Friday, January 13th at home on Stratford Court. The final score: Stratford 56 vs. Brenham 51. The Spartan’s were behind by 7 at the end of the first quarter after jumping out to an early lead, then still trailing by 6 at halftime. Stratford finished the third quarter with a 1 point lead, before going on to win the game by 5. The Spartans enjoyed a significant size and height advantage over the Cubs, but Brenham used their athleticism and quickness to create multiple problems for us. For one, the Cubs employed an effective full court press for most of the game, even with a short bench. Secondly, Brenham was very effective in creating scoring opportunities for themselves by winning the race down the court after a defensive rebound. As the game wore on, Stratford was better able to handle Brenham’s press and quickness, and then create scoring opportunities of their own. In a very decisive point of the game in the third quarter, Brenham had increased their halftime lead and Stratford found themselves behind by 10 points. At this point, Stratford scored 9 straight points with three straight three-point plays, which included two “and-one” three-point plays and one long short for three points. This momentum boosted the Spartan’s confidence and helped to carry them to victory. With this victory, the JV boys have won 8 of their last 9 games.
The Spartans were led in scoring by Micah with 15 points; followed by Patrick (12), Nikko (5), Kurt (5), Austin (5), Juwan (3), Ladarius (3), Corey (3), Jody (2), Matt Englund (2), and Matt Martin (1). Patrick led with 7 rebounds; followed by Matt Englund (6). Micah led with 4 steals and 3 assists.

The Stratford JV boys went to 2-0 in district play with their impressive 48 point win over the Spring Woods Tigers on Tuesday, January 3rd at Coleman Coliseum. The final score, Stratford 76 vs. Spring Woods 28 pointed to the overall dominant play of the Spartans. Stratford was only leading by 6 points at the end of the first quarter after getting off to a bit of a slow start. But, a 22 point scoring burst in the second quarter followed by 26 more points in the third quarter put the Spartans way out ahead. With the win, Stratford has visited the win column in five of their last six games.
The Spartans were led in scoring by Reese with 10 points; with Juwan, Corey, Kurt, Dimitri, Ladarius, Jody, Patrick, Nikko, Connor, Matt Englund, and Austin adding 9, 9, 8, 8, 7, 5, 5, 4, 4, 4, and 3 points respectively. Stratford 48 vs. Cy Ranch 47
The Stratford JV boys avenged an earlier loss this season with a very exciting victory over the Cy Ranch Mustangs on Tuesday, December 20th on the road at Cy Ranch High School. The final score, Stratford 48 vs. Cy Ranch 47 was a hard fought contest in which the Spartans trailed at the end of each of the first three quarters. But after overcoming an eight point deficit to start the fourth quarter, Stratford held on to post their fourth victory in a row. This was very likely a much better Cy Ranch team than the one the Spartans faced earlier in the season due to player movement on the Cy Ranch roster. Stratford got off to slow start and had only scored 18 points at halftime. In third quarter, the Spartans held the Mustangs to 7 points, and then Stratford exploded for 21 points of their own in the deciding fourth quarter.
The Spartans were led by Micah with 13 points; with Nikko, Austin, Matt Englund, Corey, Ladarius, Juwan, Dimitri, and Connor adding 8, 8, 6, 5, 2, 2, 2, and 1 points respectively. Stratford 58 vs. Magnolia 44
The Stratford JV boys opened district play with an impressive 14 point win over the Magnolia Bulldogs on Friday, December 16th on the road at Magnolia High School. The final score, Stratford 58 vs. Magnolia 44 was not as close as the score indicated since the Bulldogs scored some meaningless buckets at the end of the game to cut their deficit to 14 points. Facing a 2-3 zone defense extensively for the first time this year, Stratford used an efficient offense to lead the game after each quarter. The Spartans did a nice job of handling the Bulldog full court pressure. The only thing that kept the score from being a complete blow-out was the large number of free throws the Bulldogs shot in comparison to the Spartans number of free throws. The Spartans have won three games in a row, and look to avenge an earlier loss in the season with a re-match against Cy-Ranch on Tuesday the 20th.
The Spartans were led by Jody with 12 points; with Austin, Nikko, Juwan, Micah, Dimitri, Patrick, Reese, Terrance, Kurt, Corey, Matt Martin, Matt Englund, and Connor adding 9, 7, 5, 5, 4, 4, 3, 2, 2, 2, 1, 1, and 1 points respectively. Game 10 of the season was the annual match-up with the Memorial Mustangs JV at Don Coleman Coliseum on Tuesday, December 6th. The final score, Memorial Mustangs 59 vs. Stratford 35, was due mostly to a rough night in all areas of the game for the Spartans. Recent games have seen the Spartans start very slowly, but play better and better as the games have worn on. The pattern did not continue tonight as the Spartans were outscored in every quarter.
The Spartans were led by Nikko with 6 points; with Matt England, Patrick, Juwan, Reese, Kurt, and Austin adding 5, 5, 4, 4, 3, and 3 points respectively. Connor and Patrick led with 3 rebounds each, and Reese led with 3 steals.

Game 11 of the season was game 1 of the Santa Fe High School JV Tournament with a match-up of the Spartans against the Alief Taylor Lions at the Santa Fe High School main court on Thursday, December 8th. The final score: Alief Taylor 56 vs. Stratford 50. This was a one point game with just a couple of minutes remaining in the game, and either team could have won. Alief Taylor featured an athletic team that full court pressed the Spartans for the entire game. Stratford responded well to the pressing defense, and actually used the pressure to create many fast break points for themselves. The Spartans competed and played hard, but could not come up with the victory at the end of this very good game.
The Spartans were led by Corey with 14 points; with Kurt, Patrick, Micah, Juwan, Austin, Reese, and Terrance adding 9, 9, 6, 4, 3, 3, and 2 points respectively. Micah led with 2 steals, followed by Terrance, Juwan and Matt Martin with 1 each.

Stratford cut the lead to 5 points by the end of the third quarter, then used a 25 point fourth quarter to win the game. The game was tied at the 3:52 point of the fourth quarter and there were multiple lead changes in the last 3 minutes of this very exciting game.
The Spartans were led by Patrick with 17 points; with Juwan, Micah, Austin, Nikko, Corey, Terrance, Connor, and Kurt adding 16, 10, 7, 6, 5, 4, 4, and 2 points respectively. Juwan, Corey, and Patrick had 4 rebounds each, and Nikko and Kurt each had 3 steals.

The final score, Stratford 59 vs. Texas City 50 was the fourth win of the season for the Spartans. The Spartans used an efficient game to build a 9 point lead in the third quarter and cruised on to victory. This tournament was a good test for the Spartans as their half of the bracket was loaded with some good, athletic, pressing teams. Stratford responded well to the full court pressure applied by opposing defenses, along with giving a tune-up to their own full court pressure defense.
The Spartans were led by Nikko with 14 points; with Patrick, Austin, Micah, Juwan, Kurt, Corey, Matt England, Reese, and Dimitri adding 9, 9, 7, 6, 5, 4, 2, 2, and 1 points respectively. Stratford 80 - Cy-Ridge 71 (4 Overtimes)
Yes, you read that correctly. Victory after 4 overtimes for the Spartans! Game 5 of the season featured the second victory for the Stratford JV boys with an incredible 4 overtimes win against the Class 5A Cy-Ridge Rams played in front of a frenzied crowd at Cy-Ridge's main court on Monday, November 21st. Stratford's "never give up" attitude was on display many times in a game that featured multiple buzzer beater shots that extended the game to extra periods. The crowd grew in size and intensity as fans started to arrive for the varsity game to follow, and were greeted to this extra period thriller. Stratford used efficient offense with four players scoring in double figures along with great work on the boards. Stratford averaged less than 3 turnovers per period for the 8 periods of the game, and had a total of 28 rebounds for the game. To make things even more exciting, Cy-Ridge featured a "no conscience" three point shooting offense that created long rebounding opportunities for both teams when they didn't make the shot, and no lead was safe. Only in the fourth overtime was Stratford able to pull away to the final score, Stratford 80 vs. Cy-Ridge 71.
The Spartans were led by Micah with 23 points, with Matt England, Corey, and Nikko adding 15, 14, and 11 points respectively.
