Humble Tournament

The junior varsity played against a tough 5A field which included highly state ranked schools such as Clements and College Park and 4A state ranked Kingwood Park.  There might be some folks who might remember an old Country and Western TV show that had a feared sheriff called “Quick draw McDraw”.  Yesterday, we had a few players who played eventual tournament winners first round who went through the “Quick draw Backdraw” experience.  However, these players picked themselves up from their first round losses and closed out the rest of the field by winning the backdraw.   We want to congratulate Andrew Ford, Aron Sharp, Dawson Morby, Cole Zander, Parker Jones, and Stockton Schipul on coming back and collecting the medals. Congratulations goes out to Fernando Trujano and Kevin Kim for taking third place in this tough field.  To get there, they beat a tough team from state ranked College Park 8-5.  We want to congratulate the girls on good performances when they had to play up due to our top player being absent.  Producing wins were Meg Zschappel, Ricky Poonawala, Julia Siegel, and Emily Fishman in a very competitive field.  Ricky and Meg concluded the day by making it to the finals of the backdraw.  It was fun as an observer to see some strong improvements in our volleys.  The Junior Varsity has one more competition left for the Fall when they host Magnolia West on Tuesday after school.  Come out and enjoy the competition!

October Updates

Recently, the Junior Varsity took on 3 veteran teams that would very likely be placed in the top four teams in a 5A region (64 teams).  Our objective going into these matches was to play everyone and be competitive.  I believe our opponents went back home knowing they were met with strong competition and in all three matches, everyone on the team participated.

Against Clements High School (many coaches would consider this team as the top JV team in this region) we took four matches out of nineteen.  A lot of our focus in practice has been on improving our volley skills and establishing a good position at the net, which proved to help us win two of three matches in the boy’s doubles.  In singles competition, Isabel Deakins won at the number two position (8-2) and Josh Holloway won at number one (8-2).  Others who won were Aaron Sharp, Andrew Ford, and Matthew Quintana.

Our next match was against Clear Lake High School, a perennially tough squad who always has a lot talent from top to bottom.  Once again, we were competitive in doubles in winning two matches and barely losing two others by a couple of games.  We won a pair of singles in the girls and a pair of singles in the boys, but Clear Lake had too much depth in providing us losses toward the bottom of our lineup (Clearlake won the match 13-6).  Our freshmen girls (Emily Fishman, Julia Siegel, Meg Zschappel, and Dominique Thai) gained some valuable experience in their play with some “salty” veteran opponents and performed well for their team in competitive matches. Congratulations to Margaret Ginn, Jackie Velarde, Josh Holloway, Matthew Quintana, Meredith Park, Isabel Deakins, and Andrew Ford for posting wins for the Spartans!

Our last match was against a powerful Memorial High School squad whose varsity is currently ranked #2 in the state.  Their junior varsity would not be far behind, probably considered top two or three in the region (5A).  Our boys competed well with their boys, losing 5-4.  Their girls who were loaded with talent and depth, dispatched our girls 9-0.  On the guy’s side, Andrew Ford displayed a lot of talent in the number one position by beating an equally talented Memorial player in a deciding tiebreaker to post a win for the Spartans!   Leo Montero, substituting in at the number three position put his whole game together in pulling out an 8-6 win.  In the doubles, our “doubles” work had paid off with our boys taking two of three matches from the Mustangs.  Fernando Trujano and Kevin Kim won their match 8-1 and Will Choice and Dawson Morby won at the three position 8-4.

The Friday tournament concluded early enough for the players to prepare and enjoy a Homecoming Weekend!  All in all, good competition, good experience, and good play were in the mix for the last five days. Way to go Spartans!

JV vs. Waller

Our JV combined with our Freshman to post a 9-2 winning edge in their matches played. The freshman and jv boys both swept all singles and doubles matches played.  Margaret Ginn posted a nice singles win to lead our girls. Way to go everybody!  The JV host Clements and Clear Lake here on Friday in the Ft. Bend Invitational, so come on out and enjoy the action.

JV vs. Spring Woods

We took a mob over to Spring Woods and were able to play twenty matches between the junior varsity and freshman squads.  Our freshman boys were chomping at the bit since no other team so far had been able to field a freshman team.  They unleashed that desire to play by sweeping all of the matches they played and doing so without losing a single individual game.  The fish finished with a solid 6-0 record in matches played. Talk about an impressive start.  The JV were also in charge and went 12-2 in the matches they played. Ricky Poonawalla was our comeback kid of the day in winning her match after being down 5-1.  All told a lot of fun and good work on the courts.

JV vs. Magnolia

The JV had a good day at the “office”. Everyone got into the mix contributing to a convincing 13-3 victory. The team produced a 4-3 edge with the guys going a solid 3-1 on their side of the equation.  Our singles players stepped up big and did not allow a Magnolia win in either the boys or girls matches.  Congrats to the following players for the singles sweep: Diana Ruiz, Jackie Velardi, Margaret Ginn, Chae Kim, Ricky Poonawala, Andrew Ford, Aron Sharp, Kevin Kim, Bradley Morris and Stockton Shipel.  Good job team!

JV vs. Brenham

Because Brenham had a limited number of available JV players, we decided to play the JV match with the varsity on Tuesday, saving us a long drive.  We were able to play four doubles matches and eight singles matches in the abbreviated contest with Stratford claiming an 8-4 victory.  Our boys looked solid in yielding few games to their opponent and winning all six matches played. Congrats to Andrew Ford, Aron Sharp, Kevin Kim and Fernando Trujano for their dominating play.  Diana Ruiz and Margaret Ginn were bright spots for the girls as they recorded singles victories.

Congratulations to both Alex Nguyen and Mallory Edwards who competed in a Houston area Z.A.T. this weekend.  Mallory powered her way to the finals of her division and has now qualified to compete as a Championship level player in the 16’s age division of future USTA events.  Good job Mallory.  In addition, freshman Alex Nguyen knocked off the #2 seed on his way to winning the boys 14’s ZAT and also qualify for Championship status.  Alex won each of his matches in straight sets.  Way to go Alex. Ricky Chelala also had a nice run in his division and reached the semifinals while Fernando Trujano bagged a solid first round victory.
