Freshman Tennis @ Humble ISD Doubles Invitational, Thursday November 17
Our freshman guys traveled to Kingwood to play in the Humble ISD Doubles Invitational. The field was very challenging with every school in the draw being represented by varsity teams who had advanced to the regional championships and 7 of the 8 teams also carrying TTCA top 20 state rankings. I am proud to announce our guys came through with flying colors. Every division (A,B,C and D) won their first round matches to advance to the main draw pools. Our D division was represented by Kevin Han and Charlie Boyle who had a nifty 8-4 win over Kingwood Park before finishing 4th overall. Jack Chirichigno and Nick Lydick represented us in the C draw where they knocked off Kingwood 8-3 in the first round. Despite leading much of the second round, service faults cost us a trip to the finals in a very competitive 8-6 loss to Clements. The guys recovered well to win a 12-10 third set super tiebreaker over College Park to take 3rd place overall. Our B doubles team saw Alex Nguyen and Alan Pham take out Clements and Deer Park squads to reach the finals where they split sets with another talented Clements team. Clements prevailed 10-6 in the third set in a very entertaining back and forth exhibition of skill by both teams. Our A boys team featured Wells Cooksey and Javier Lehtinen who dominated aClear Lake team in the opening round and snuck through an 8-7 nail biter in the semis over Clements to set up their finals match with another Clements squad. These teams represented the best two teams in the tournament and lived up to that reputation with a great match. Clements was the better team in the eventual 7-5, 6-4 win but we proved we could play with the best. All in all a great effort from our freshman boys and a solid ending to the fall season.
